One of my coping strategies for stress is to rewatch parts of favorite videos--movies, television shows, fanvids now too. Mostly movies, though. This week (and late last week) it was The Triplets of Belleville, a very trippy animated film. My favorite part is when the grandmother takes her paddle-boat across the ocean to find her grandson--the tiny little (hand-drawn) boat is almost swallowed up in gorgeous (computer-generated) storm swells. The music is from Mozart's Kyrie Eleison. I've watched it several times these past few days.
That leads me to this: I've been thinking about weird movies I like. So, in no particular order, here are four strange movies that I enjoyed enough to watch at least twice.
1. (just mentioned) The Triplets of Belleville.
Roger Ebert went a bit over the top to emphasize how weird this film is, but his review did make me laugh. This sentence, for example:
"It's one of those movies where you keep banging your fist against your head to stop yourself from using the word meets, as in Monsieur Hulot meets Tim Burton, or the Marquis de Sade meets Lance Armstrong."
You know how people like to quote lines from Monty Python and the Holy Grail? I wish I could quote video bits from this film--the boat ride I already mentioned, the triplets getting their dinner with hand grenades, Madame Souza saving the day with her shoe...
2. Time Bandits.
I decided to limit myself to just one film by Terry Gilliam. He could have a top-whatever list of weird movies; all of his are strange. TB isn't a great movie, but it's good and fun and generally silly without annoying me.
3. A Room with a View.
Not a movie that's unabashedly strange, like the others on this list--but there's a certain quirky, sly humor to this that is part of the atttraction for me. Any film that can take the then-hunky Daniel Day Lewis and make him into a vaguely repulsive nerd should fit into the strange category. Admittely, I mostly (re)watch it for That Kiss, though. *sigh*
4. Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?
George Clooney's Ulysses Everett McGill was a delight in all his vainglorious moments. "My hair!" Hee! Another movie that I wouldn't classify as great, but it's extremely entertaining.

Having finished my work-related stuff early (if you call 8 p.m. early--I guess it is for this week), I have to decide: watch Farscape, make a (long overdue) necklace for a friend, or rewatch one of those movies I just mentioned?
