la la la girly!

I like shopping for clothes, except when I hate it.

Y'all already know I'm girly. To present my fashion credentials, let me state that I know some about the basics of sewing and pattern-making, and I watched a lot of What Not to Wear when I still have a satellite dish. Super-qualified, that's me. *g*

Why are tapered-leg pants back in style? Skinny jeans are the extreme example of that trend. They look bad on most people. No one needs to have an ice-cream cone shape emphasized by tapered legs. *sigh* I liked the straight-leg pants with their nice wide fit down to the bottom. For now both cuts seem to be acceptable but I'm worried that the skinny leg is going to get more dominant in the future. Bleah.

Those baby-doll tops are likewise unflattering on most body types. Even the super-skinny women look like they're pregnant when wearing them. Why are they back in style when they looked so wrong the first time? A very few of them are pleasing, most are not.

FYI to clothing pattern-makers: side-darts at the bustline are supposed to line up with the fullest part of the bust. When the dart is below the whole breast, there's something wrong with the pattern. (Granted that I'm not built like Pamela Anderson, but most of us aren't.) And stop changing sizes on us--my shape hasn't changed much in more than a decade but I keep having to switch to smaller numbers in clothing sizes. Oh, and one more thing: WOMEN HAVE CURVES! Like hips, for example!

At least skirts are still cute and cut nicely this season. Lots of fun patterns, fitted at the waist and more full below--a cut that looks good on lots of different body types. The reverse darts are good for keeping the fulness of the skirt below the hip line, very helpful to those of us with wide hips. I'm still seeing some A-line and bell-shaped skirts as well, which is good, considering how many of those I have in my wardrobe already.

And now for something completely different: a Buffy-verse fic rec. The Last Tin Soldier by [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs. Set post-Angel (dealing with the mess after the series finale), it's fascinating and sad. Rated PG; Xander, Spike, later appearances by the Scooby Gang... So far six parts out of eight have been posted--it should be finished soon. (Individual chapters are looong; they're linked to the next chapter at the bottom.)

Harry Potter-verse fic rec: The Little Ones by [livejournal.com profile] furiosity. Spoilers through book seven--set at the train station at the beginning of the new school year. PG, about 2000 words; Ginny, Neville, Luna.

Yup. Uncomfortable, unattractive, unforgiving of most body types...
