You're doing fine, Oklahoma!

I was thinking about writing a whiny f-locked post about work and various other woes. Then I ate my delicious chicken sandwich from Panera bread and watched Pushing Daisies. Now all I can think about is how much I want pie. I ♥ Ned! and Digby!

Okay. I believe at some point in this past week I intended to write more than just once about Oklahoma, in honor of the centennial, which is TOMORROW! wish I were there

Part of my family tree was rooted in Oklahoma in the early 1800's (earlier post). Other lines arrived later, lured by the promise of free or cheap land. Most of the land that had been set aside for the displaced Native Americans was gradually parceled out to white settlers in several land runs, between 1889-1895. I have a couple of different ancestors who acquired land that way. My favorite to talk about is my great-grandmother Anna Rosa. Full-blood Norwegian (born in the US to immigrant parents), she was apparently quite a character. She entered a land run as a single woman, rare for that time period. We don't know if the land was desired because she wanted to stay independent or because it might be appealing to some man... at any rate, she did marry later. My dad has a few memories of her; mostly of her being incredibly stubborn. Apparently that particular trait is a dominant gene. Heh.

I feel obligated to say this: land runs were not much like they were portrayed in that Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman movie 'Far and Away.' Sorry to burst anyone's bubble. *g*

My alma mater is the University of Oklahoma. Team name--the Sooners. Sooners were people who sneaked over the starting line of a land run ahead of time. Yeah, it's not exactly an illustrious name, but it's definitely historical.

Random facts:
Thirty-nine tribes have headquarters in Oklahoma.
Our state song is from a musical by Rogers and Hammerstein!
We have the only state capital with an oil well drilled underneath it.
