fanfic meme 2008

Last year I said that if I did this own-fic meme again, I'd make up my own categories. Well... some are but most are just stolen from other places.

Best story I wrote: Probably Jealous Gods (Kara/Sam, New Caprica). It certainly got more recs than anything else I've written. It was my only time to use the McSweeney’s lists for section titles.

Most underappreciated story I wrote: Mirage, maybe? I really enjoyed creating (re-creating, actually, since this was a remix fic) Roslin's chamalla dreams, and it's the only time I've written her POV. Possibly I'm the only one who's fascinated by the idea of Laura and Leoben interacting. I actually have another fic idea with those two meeting--and not just in a dream. But that's currently in the 'not going to get written (by me)' pile now.

Most fun story: Like a Bad Fairytale was the easiest thing to write. An hour before bedtime, an hour the next day, and it still makes me laugh. I really wish I could write the sequel, with Tory calling the baby Clytemnestra or Iphigenaea, and Leoben naming her River Faith. Sadly the crackmuse is fleeting.

Sexiest moment: Want to Remember, according to someone on my f'list. :-) Mmm, Six/Leoben. That story still freaks me out just a wee bit, though--not from the sensuality of it, but from Leoben's 'vision' of him and Kara together in the future.

Story I wrote to fix things: Bound. It wasn't done deliberately--I don't feel like I'm that in control of what I write yet--but some part of me really wanted to 'fix' Kara and Sam after that scene on the Demetrius. Not that this really fixed them, but it came close to making the most depressing parts of that scene more bearable to me.

Hardest story to do: Touched by the Sun. Writing other people's prompts is great fun, until I have to write one of them. Heh. This story got a surprising amount of feedback, in my opinion. Dee and Kara working together is wish fulfillment, I guess.

Biggest surprise: Interim, definitely. Who knew I had such an interest in what it was like for a cop to spend time on death row? I'd also classify this story as the most revealing, just because I managed to insert my own fascination with languages into Charlie Crews' past. This story is the only one written for a fandom other than Battlestar Galactica.

Noteworthy event: [livejournal.com profile] prolix_allie commented on Into the Underworld (Racetrack pov) that I was like the patron saint of neglected female characters. So I put that as my name in my LJ profile, because it makes me laugh.

Themes, or absence thereof: 2007 was the year of the cylon for me. FYI for anyone new-ish around here, it was also my first full year of writing fanfic. This year I wrote some stories (Never Get Back Home, for example) that were definitely not sympathetic to cylons, and only one story ('Want to Remember') from a known cylon POV. I did write several stories from Sam Anders' POV, but they were set before episode 3.20.
I still really like cylons, though! And Leoben is still my very bad idea TV boyfriend.

More theme stuff: Kara/Sam stuff galore--ficlets, full-length fics... I somehow managed to get attached to this pair, much to my chagrin.

fic goals: Like last year, I remain goal-less. Fanfic is fun and I have no reason at this point to push myself into writing more. I am a bit frustrated at not finishing the D'Anna pov story I started a couple of months ago as well as the Mathias and Barolay story that's also stalled right now. Hm. Maybe I can get the D'Anna story finished before season 4.5 of BSG starts.

my mostly-complete list of fic

Jealous Gods: I LOVE that fic to pieces. I'm so glad you agree. ;) But seriously, I go bananas every time you write Kara or Sam, but I thought that was particularly excellent, so I'm glad you're not like "eh, it was just something I threw together" because then I might be jealous.

I liked Mirage! And I'm interested in your idea, though it's not exactly in my comfort zone, either.

It makes me happy that Kara and Dee interacting is wish-fulfillment for people besides me. Sorry for the torment - I enjoyed the results!

Bound: I know you took some criticism for that one, but it rang very true to me, and how I view the characters, so ... I was happy. :D (You, Lyssie and Mark Verheiden totally saved it. *g*) But it's an interesting point - if I think about it, a lot of the time I write, it's because I want to 'fix' something, whether it's a character that I want to understand more or a scene that I feel *must* have happened to explain what came later or the relationship these characters have. Not all the time, but most - which is why BSG is such a perfect fandom for me, because it is so sloppy with characterization sometimes, and there are so many WTF moments. It's a little ironic. ;)

Where do I get these crazy notions?! <3

*snickers* Trust me, it was definitely NOT just thrown together. I worked on it for months. The only thing that actually saved it from the scrap pile was the idea of using those McSweeney's lists as section titles--because somehow those helped me tie it all together.

It makes me happy that Kara and Dee interacting is wish-fulfillment for people besides me. Sorry for the torment - I enjoyed the results!

Hee! I liked the results too, so thanks again. And it really does please me that people want to see those two working together, since there's an anti-Dee contingent out there. Gives me hope that not everyone in fandom is like that. (Well, most people aren't like that at all. But certain fans can get really vocal at times... as we both know, being fans of Cally.)

Bound: I know you took some criticism for that one, but it rang very true to me, and how I view the characters, so ... I was happy. :D (You, Lyssie and Mark Verheiden totally saved it. *g*)

Well, when I go back and reread it, it still works for me as well. But I can better recognize my own motivations, now that more time has passed.

Hee! Yes to all of this. That and having a slightly different yet mostly familiar world--for me that helps. I think this same motivation works for the only non-BSG fic I've written, too.

Thanks for the LJ profile name!
