BSG fic recs for women who didn't make it into the show's opening credits

Have some gen (or mostly gen) women-centered Battlestar Galactica fanfics. These stories are NOT mainly about Laura, Kara, Athena or Caprica Six. They're about other women: primarily about them, written from their POV, or they play a major role. The four women I just mentioned by name do appear in some stories, but I tried to make sure those stories had a large enough focus on the other women that it 'counted.' (It's pretty arbitrary.) I didn't list stories with original characters playing a key role. I am including some of my own stories. I didn't link any crackfic (sorry, werewolf Maggie) or crossover stories.

I finally stopped once I'd gone back about two and a half years in the bookmarks, 'cause I was tired. And I didn't put any of the current [livejournal.com profile] bsg_remix stories on the list. You should definitely go read them anyway!

This isn't meant to be definitive, even without the rules I (randomly) set up. I just grabbed as many as I could from the stories I already have bookmarked. Feel free to put some of your own favorites in the comments.

Ellen Tigh
Chavelle's Primrose Mystery by [livejournal.com profile] lls_mutant: The last cosmetics vendor in the universe has turned up dead. Ellen Tigh needs to figure out who killed her, before she's accused of the crime herself.

What's Past is Prologue by [livejournal.com profile] gotatheory: Ellen Tigh on Earth.

Dead Letter Box, by [livejournal.com profile] falafel_musings: Ellen Tigh finds a way to help the resistance and rise above her degradations on New Caprica. Oh, Ellen... *sniffles*

Eights (but not Athena)
Honor and Duty by [livejournal.com profile] lls_mutant: Sometimes you have to do things for the good of your people… even if don't understand. (The Eight from the season 4.5 webisodes. Not very gen, but the story really isn't about romance, either.)

Sinistra by me: She started having trouble connecting to the parts of herself she knew as Sharon; she held onto them tightly, fearful of losing what she knew of herself (Boomer).

Reawake, by [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777: They are all family. I will find them. Especially her. (Boomer)

Cally
Not Where I Belong by [livejournal.com profile] lls_mutant: AU for season four, "Tory might have pulled her from the launch tube, but Cally's life still felt like it was over. Everything she loved was gone, or at the very least, changed to something that she hated."

Obviously we need more Cally gen(ish) fic! Good thing that the above story has multiple chapters, I guess. And that it's AWESOME, and also has Dee and lots of other women.

Sixes (but not Caprica)
Schoolgirl's Crush by [livejournal.com profile] demonqueen666: "We were just trying to help these people." (Not really gen, but it's unrequited, and... I just have to keep it on the list, because it makes the perfect explanation for this Six and why she killed Jean.)

Glass Slipper by [livejournal.com profile] nicole_anell: Gina still has nightmares that she is ugly.

Why Colors Disappear by [livejournal.com profile] lyssie: There are times when you can pretend you're fine and it never happened (Gina).

Racetrack
Into the Underworld by me: Maybe Maggie's already in Hades.

End over End by [livejournal.com profile] lint138: This is starting to become become a habit don't you think? You, me, and a frakked up Raptor.

Seelix
Rook by [livejournal.com profile] lint138: It's a funny feeling getting your greatest wish in times like these.

Pretty Girl by me: Seelix is caught while working for the Resistance

Ensign by [livejournal.com profile] rayruz.

Layne Ishay
Battle Scars by [livejournal.com profile] lyssie: Layne Ishay deals with the mutiny and the Cylons in her own way.

Do No Harm by [livejournal.com profile] brennanspeaks: The story of a mutiny, a medic, and the three patients who stayed with her.

Jean Barolay
Nemesis by me. DB reminded me that I forgot to include this. I was sort of purposely forgetting because I love this story so much that IT HURTS ME INSIDE that it's now been made AU by "The Plan." *dramatic sigh* (Yes, I like my own stories. So there.) Anyway, it's post-attacks on Caprica, before Jean meets up with the C-Bucs. Yup, totally AU now.

Jean keeps getting written with Sam! She needs more gen!

Anastasia Dualla
Ghost Ship by [livejournal.com profile] kappamaki33: "Based on [livejournal.com profile] prophetkristy's prompt: "Felix and Dee as ghosts on the Galactica. They can't touch anything "real", but discover they can touch each other. I ended up not doing the not touching anything "real" part, though I suppose that depends on whether you read this as being Sam's dream or something that 'actually' happened."

Still Life by [livejournal.com profile] having_written (aka [livejournal.com profile] munditia): If she’d been more like Starbuck, she could have been loud and angry and looking for a fight; but she was a follower of Hestia and Hebe, a quiet onlooker trying to keep the home-fires burning.

Latter Days by [livejournal.com profile] pellucid: another written for the [livejournal.com profile] galpalficathon, prompt "Laura Roslin and Anastasia Dualla / intersections."

Feet of Clay, by [livejournal.com profile] swatkat24: Gods have this habit of having feet of clay.

Touched by the Sun, by me: written for the prompt "Kara and Dee, the two are forced to join forces for a common good. Season four spec. would be great."

Logic Dictates, by [livejournal.com profile] lyssie: Anastasia Dualla was raised to put others before herself, and to believe that things would work out right in the end. The cylons, however, had other ideas.

Five Times Dee Didn't Play Cards and One Time She Did, by [livejournal.com profile] kappamaki33: Dee and Gaeta's friendship, though there's a lot more going on as well.

Tory Foster
Light at the End by [livejournal.com profile] frolicndetour: "Whatever happened to Tory Foster?"

What did every happen to Tory? She got written in stories that were mostly about Laura Roslin, that's what happened here, at any rate. (I wrote Tory once! But she was having Leoben's baby; it was very much crack-filled and not particularly gen.)

multiple women
River to the Sea by [livejournal.com profile] grav_ity: Everywhere he goes, Leoben starts a religion. (And all those religions are based on women from the show.)

Where Bullets Can No Longer Wound Us, by [livejournal.com profile] falafel_musings: A three-part hauntings fic. Dee receives a visit from Billy before her suicide. Felix recieves a visit from Dee before his mutiny. Boomer recieves a visit from Felix while she is locked in the Brig. They reach out towards their respective ghosts. They reach for a place where bullets can no longer wound them. (Dee, Billy, Felix, Boomer)

In Limbo, by [livejournal.com profile] arenotvalid (aka [livejournal.com profile] smercy): Written for the [livejournal.com profile] galpalficathon, prompt "Racetrack, Seelix, and Cally / baby-sit." "After surviving an apocalypse, moral ambiguity is a luxury."

All the Poise of a Cannonball by [livejournal.com profile] nicole_anell: "You can't declare love on war." (Seelix, Barolay, other members of the Resistance after the alliance with the Cylons)

Echoes Knocking, by [livejournal.com profile] lyssie. I, uh, can't think of a summary.

Lost in Space on a Desert Island, by [livejournal.com profile] ivanolix: Kara ends up stuck on a Raptor repair flight that has a lot more trouble than the brochure indicated, and she has to work with a new team if she's going to get them out of the trouble in one piece. (Kara, Boomer, Dee, Cally--set pre-series)

When There Were No More Graveyards, by [livejournal.com profile] kappamaki33: prompt "Dee friendship with anyone *but* Gaeta. Bonus points if it's a woman."

There are lots of shorter stories out there, too. I know I have some ficlets/comment-fics that would be too tiring to link to individually, for example.

Thank you for the recs, and great list!

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome!

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
You are awesome! More about BSG's forgotten women to read! I love some of these. I read almost everything [livejournal.com profile] lls_mutant's writes if it's not too similar to something I'm in the process of writing. Others of these I haven't read before or haven't read in a long time. Yay, more reading!

I really like Lost in Space on a Desert Island by [livejournal.com profile] ivanolix. Four women working together to save the day. :-) I have to rec this story again some time soon in my own journal.

You didn't rec your Jean Barolay story? I love that one!

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I added Jean to the list now. I just got tired earlier, and it was just a bit past where I stopped...

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
No worries! Jean is here now. :-) Oh, and Jean isn't just written with Sam. It's not gen but JEAN. You know I will take any Jean. :-)

Someday someone needs to write what went down with her and PTSD!Six. For reals. Natalie tried to work that out with PTSD!Six and it didn't work. :-( I don't think it's in me to write it but maybe if I put it out into the universe . . .

You should hit [livejournal.com profile] bsg_femslash, I'm pretty sure there's fic for that one there.

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
Cool! There should be more gen too but for some reason there isn't that much gen Jean. But any Jean is cool with me!

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The story up there by [livejournal.com profile] demonqueen666 is a plausible explanation for what might've happened between Jean & the Six.

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, Rose! That story was messed up! Poor PTSD!Six. :-(

And look I've encouraged more Jean. Love it. :-)

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
PTSD!Six is sad indeed. And even though the story isn't really gen, I had to include it, because otherwise she would have no voice at all. (And because I never thought anything would make me feel sympathy for the woman who killed Jean, but that did.)

*laughs* You got more Jean fic! I'm amused, because in my backstory, Felix does know who Jean is (as a C-Buc). (Yes, I already have ideas for your story for beta-reading my remix fic. Weirdly enough, no one has guessed right yet! I thought it was glaringly obvious. Hm.)

[identity profile] ivanolix.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, awesome recs!

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

[identity profile] lls-mutant.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Eee! Thanks for the recs, and this is an AWESOME list!

[livejournal.com profile] kappamaki33's got a couple more- one of my favorites of hers is Five Times Dee Didn't Play Cards, and One Time That She Did. I also really like her Mathematics, but it's not gen. I LOVE "Do No Harm", but you cited that one already.

Great list!

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently [livejournal.com profile] kappamaki33 doesn't know the rule that I must be made aware of ALL genfic about secondary female characters. (I added two more of hers to the list, thanks! Now I need to comment on them and put them in my bookmarks.)

[identity profile] lls-mutant.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Whoohoo!!!! Glad I could help!

Yay, I'm glad it's useful!

Awesome! I saw your tagline, “patron saint of neglected female characters,” and I visited your blog in the hopes of finding something just like this. As a HUGE fan of Cally, a regular fan of Ellen Tigh, Dee, and Jean Barolay, and a growing fan of Tory Foster, I’m looking forward to digging into these fics. :-D

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Hope you find some stories you enjoy!

Awesome rec list! I must bookmark.

I have an additions to your Seelix recs. Ensign (http://archiveofourown.org/works/14990?view_adult=true) by Rayruz

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

Huh, I thought I'd commented on that Seelix fic. Apparently I didn't. I appreciate the link; already added it to the list.

I wrote a Dee-centric fic a long while back, Set Light To Me Some Surprising Day (http://mercurial-wit.livejournal.com/37783.html) :)

Here via [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon: thanks a bunch for linking these! I had known some of these stories before, but there are quite a few I've never read and am looking forward to explore.

(Also, thank you for recommending one of my own fics!)

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I actually went back in and added another story of yours. (Deciding what is gen and what isn't when there are canon relationships is tricky...)

User [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock referenced to your post from Fun ways to celebrate the ladies (http://igrockspock.livejournal.com/152437.html) saying: [...] February 1 to February 14. My favorite thing so far is a rec list of minor female characters on BSG [...]
