musical requests (of the technology kind)

I'll get to the writing stuff for my previous post sometime this week. Right now I'm trying to organize a corner of the living room. I've come to the realization that part of the problem is I still own CD's. Lots of CD's. They haven't just magically disappeared even though I purchase and download most of my new music through sites like emusic.com and amazon.com. I do continue to listen to the CD's at times--my home stereo system is old and doesn't have anywhere to input an mp3 player. So...

1) What do you do with your old CD's? I figure I'll rip them to my computer and maybe burn a backup DVD full of the mp3 files, but what do I then do with the CD's? Trash them? I'm definitely not comfortable trying to resell them if I'm keeping a copy of the music.

2) If you've had any experience with home stereo systems that allow you to play music through an mp3 player, how was it? Any recommendations? Currently I'm thinking I'd like something that allows for mp3 player input and has a radio tuner built in. Probably no need for a tape player or CD player, assuming I download all of my CD's to the computer.

Gah, I feel like I'm such a technology fogey.

You're a tech fogey? I don't even have mp3s. Or any sort of iPod-esque player. I guess I'm not into music? I only own about 15 CDs in total, having only just gotten into that format. I guess I missed that boat, huh?

You know you are a fogey when your mom knows more about mp3s than you do. Sad, but true. :-)

ETA: Maybe you can Freecycle your CDs?

Okay, so now I don't feel like quite so much of a technology fogey.

Hah, my dad probably does know more about mp3's than me, though. He also still has a record collection, however--which he digitized ages ago, but has kept nonetheless.

I'll check what freecycle has to say. (I had to sign up to join the local group, and it takes time to be approved by the mods.) It looks like there are a couple of services in the US that allow you to mail in CD's and the cases to be recycled as well. Reading how long it takes for CD's to break down in nature is depressing...

My parents have a Sony thing--sorry I don't know what else to call it--that does iPod, radio, and CDs. I mostly just use it as an iPod dock, since I don't really listen to the radio, but, well, it works.

It's a Sony brand thing that works with an iPod? So maybe they make them to work with non-Apple brand mp3 players. I'll have to look into this. Or give in and finally buy an iPod. If I go ahead and download all my CD's onto my computer, I'll need way more memory for an mp3 player than what I have right now.

You could donate the used CDs to a thrift store.

I simply use my laptop computer to play music, rather than owning any music system/stereo. It's got decent enough sound for me. And I burn mixed CDs to play in my car. I find it rather amusing that even CDs are now becoming obsolete, but I do love the digital music age. Anything that facilitates there being less clutter in my life is a good thing!

I play a lot of music on my computer as well. I have some separate speakers, so the sound is okay.

Yeah, it's astonishing how fast we're cycling through technology. DVD's are becoming obsolete with blu-ray and with downloading/online streaming of videos. It's enough to give me mental whiplash! Though you're right about the less clutter being a big plus.
