days 20 and 21 of favorite female characters
Battlestar Galactica wasn't the only divisive show I watched for the past several years. (By divisive I mean the different (LOVE! HATE! RAGE!) reactions throughout the show and particularly to the finale.) I also liked Lost. And I watched all of it and liked it. Please note that I didn't say love, but it was always interesting.
I picked two women who were in the first episode and survived until the last season. One made it almost to the end, the other lived, well, happily ever after? I hope?
First, Rose Nadler.
Rose almost didn't survive the plane crash. Boone's CPR wasn't particularly useful, but Jack saved her. (Yes, that was the pattern right from the beginning. Though he wasn't yet an idiot with his savior complex from what we could see.) I recognized the actress immediately--she played a small role in The Fugitive and then I started noticing her all over the place: one episode of The Pretender, two of E.R., time on Judging Amy... At any rate, I was predisposed to like Rose. And she didn't disappoint--her character wasn't on every episode, but she was generally interesting and good at cutting through a lot of crap. Oh, and after (me)* thinking she was a widow due to the plane crash, she ended up reunited with her husband! And hopefully they're living on the Island, helping out Hurley and being leery of Ben.
*I forgot about this: she always said Bernard was still alive. I figured she was just delusional. Yay for (me) being wrong!
Next, Sun-Hwa Paik Kwon.
Sun and her husband Jin get a really awesome (in my opinion) introduction to the audience: we don't hear her speaking English for several episodes. Then we find out that she knows English, but that's a secret from her husband. The reveals about Sun's life were generally handled well--we learn of her 'gangster' father's extensive influence, of her husband's (BIG) faults and strengths, of her own desires and deceptions. She took a life event that could devastate others (her presumed widowhood combined with impending motherhood) and used it to create her own power. She even buys out her father's business, holding him partially accountable for Jin's death.
That's something I appreciated about her--she was able to confront powerful, influential men and remain confident and powerful herself.
And then Lost broke my heart, The End. Heh.
I have no icons of female characters from Lost? And two of Sawyer, and I didn't particularly like him? Weird.

I agree that Lost was not so great with real characterization. And I don't think it's the fault of the actors most of the time.
Pretty, pretty show, yes--pretty people, pretty scenery. And argh, bad blond boys. Oops. That's totally why I have two Sawyer icons. Well, that and he makes really good funny faces.
