days 22 and 23 of favorite female characters
If you have a livejournal, you've probably already seen the news that Yahoo's popular bookmarking service, delicious.com, is going away sometime soon. No final date given yet, though. Hopefully I can wait until after the new year to worry about it, since I have plenty to do before then.
*sigh* I have almost 300 fanfics for Battlestar Galactica bookmarked. I have a separate delicious.com account that I use for work all the time. This is not a fun piece of news.
Ah well. On to the next female character! Weirdly enough, finding and uploading a picture of the day's character(s), writing a little blurb and then posting it has been helpful in making myself stay focused while writing Yuletide fic. (Over 2000 words now. Probably another 1000 to go. Then editing, editing, editing.)
So for today we have the human versions (sort of) of Miss Piggy and Prairie Dawn: Cordelia Chase and Winifred Burkle. They have more in common than you would think. Both started as one-note characters (sassy girl, scared recovering victim) who first resisted but then embraced their abilities to grow and become more. Both have an amazing talent for survival. More than just survival, though--both prospered when they could have given up.
And some other stuff happened too that connects both of them.

Cordelia was so much fun on the show Buffy. It was a very smart choice to have her join Angel's budding 'team' in LA. She added some needed leavening to the mix and her character had lots of room for growth. Former cheerleader to broke wanna-be starlet (and almost victim) to secretary for a cranky vampire to unwilling seer to fighter. And still cheerleader, because they all needed that: Gunn, Wesley, Fred and especially Angel. Cheerleader or giver of "motivational" pep talks that involved speeches about getting over yourself. Heh.
And then "Cordelia" gives birth to a demon that tries to take over the world, The End.
Winifred Burkle. Y'know, I really liked the show Angel, but just as with Buffy, I'm really glad I didn't know about online fandom while the show was on air. Because I would probably have felt obliged either to dislike Fred or to spend all of my time defending her. Instead I can just say, "Yay, Fred!" (and mock you if you use the term Mary Sue when commenting on my journal).

High school pothead. College genius. Subject of envy by others, which resulted in a few nightmarish years in an alternate dimension, ruled by demons. Traumatized from her time there, she slowly began to heal and trust. And eat lots of tacos. And do really smart stuff.
And then Illyria in Fred's body tries to take over the world, The End.
Apparently I feel like writing "The End" as much as possible this week. Maybe because I can't write that on my Yuletide fic yet.

now that we see how upset everyone is." So yay. Though I think I need to do some kind of backup anyway, but it's not a pressing issue.no subject
Also, I remember Prairie Dawn!

As much as I loved the show Angel and appreciated the (few) female characters, they really didn't get happy endings. Of course, no one else really did either...

I miss Angel sometimes.
2000 words! You're almost there!
I am glad I didn't know about fandom when I watched Buffy and Angel too. I just loved them with a pure heart and no criticism. Yeah, some plot stuff bothered me but I had no one at all to discuss that with which made it very small in the face of how much fun and joy watching both series gave me. I remember rushing home from work with Chinese takeout and making sure I'd be there for Buffy. It's been a while since I've felt that way about a show.

*nods* Yes, that's very much how I feel about it, too.

For a while I was taking an evening class in a town about 40 minutes away and would drive home a bit too fast in order to watch the last twenty minutes of Angel. (Got pulled over for speeding once, but only got a warning, 'cause it was also my birthday. Heh.)

Hee! I have such good memories of watching both of those shows when they aired, and THESE TWO ARE SUCH GOOD CHOICES. <3

Fred and Cordy just make me smile. Such different characters but they were both stellar people.
