this is a post about Fringe

Dear self,

I think we're agreed that watching an episode of Fringe right before going to bed is a bad idea, yes? Let's not do that again.

Thanks ever so much,
me

P.S. WATCH OUT FOR THE IMAGINARY BUTTERFLIES, THEY ARE SCARY!

Okay, fine, I'll make a tag for Fringe now. I'm enjoying it, and I think it's because I have low expectations. Not to say that the show isn't well-done, but taking this crazy science stuff as serious business is too much of a stretch for me.

(Not sure why that is; after all, I took Lost seriously right up until... we actually saw the smoke monster, perhaps. Certainly I wasn't taking it seriously by the time we found out that the smoke monster was also some guy with mommy issues.)

Current thoughts on the characters: I like Olivia! And Peter! And Walter! Astrid needs more to do! Olivia's co-workers and boss are interesting and possibly scary! Nina Sharpe is scary and also interesting!

Having low expectations (induced by the silliness of the science) means I'm pleasantly surprised by any character and story arcs. *shrugs* So I like it and I'll continue watching, but I'm not so invested at this point that I have any interest in reading/writing fanfiction. And in very vague reference to the spoilery things I'm seeing out there for season three, it's fairly predictable even now.

Um. I think that's all I have to say about it. Posting this so I'll get off the computer and do my piano practicing. And balance my checking account like one ought to do from time to time.

eta: the discussion post for TSCC episode 1X02 is finally up, so... go discuss!

LOL, I would be surprised if there's any fan of Fringe who doesn't see the "science" as pure lulz. XD

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2011-02-24 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. The main problem with the lulzy science is that it interferes with my ability to take anything else seriously, even when the characters and music and story arcs try to persuade me to do so.

Fringe! I adore Walter. I think Fringe is best watched with little expectations. Then you don't get worried or disappointed. Right now I'm just laughing at how Walter can't manage to remember Astrid's name. It was subtle in season 1. (I am currently watching season 3 all legal from Amazon and everything!) He's called her Astro and Asterisk and this evening he called her Aspirin and I lost it. :-) I love him. It's so wrong that he can't remember such a simple name but I love him anyway. :-)

I'm still amused that you were so persistent in watching the show when you weren't really into it for so long.

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2011-02-24 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Curiosity. And love of Walter. :-)

I'm often surprised that other people aren't so curious about shows they don't know.

I... I can't quite believe Walter-love got you that far, though. Heh. But he's not my favorite character, so... ("Oh. I have an erection!" I think he induces headdesking more than affection. It's certainly a bewildered affection, at any rate.)

(Also, I now have a theory about Peter and spoilery things I know about season two, but I'm too tired to explain it and it's probably wrong and I'll find out soon enough.)

Totally unrelated but look at this (http://silentfunblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/dream-world-around-sleeping-baby.html). BABIES! Sleeping babies!

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2011-02-25 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Walter-love, venting on LJ and spring cleaning. :-) It helped me clean so much which was a great way to spend snow days.

I missed that comment. I like his love of junk food. :-)

I want to hear theory before you are all spoiled! It's early!

Babies. Aww! They are very sweet. :-)

Side note: although I keep posting about Fringe, I haven't had much time to do reading other than the basics of keeping up with LJ. The story you e-mailed me is on the back burner while I try and catch up with other stuff. (Wow, work has been... weird. I may make another locked post about it.)

Anyway! Theory about Peter.

ANYONE ELSE READING THIS: here is my speculation about Peter based on spoilers I know about season two.

This isn't really a big deal, but it was interesting to me. I'm aware there's an alternate universe, starting in season two (right?). And apparently our Peter was taken by Walter from that universe. WEIRD! So my theory: Walter's time/displacement machine that rescued that dude from prison is what he used to grab the AU Peter because his Peter died from that illness he described when telling Peter about building the 'time' machine.

It explains 1) another way that machine might be useful aside from rescuing creepy guys from jail and 2) why Peter doesn't remember being ill. Although that whole memory could also have been Walter's hallucination, you never know.

(You don't have to confirm or deny my theory.)

Whether I'm right or not, I CANNOT WAIT TO FIND OUT PETER'S REACTION WHEN HE LEARNS HE WAS SNATCHED FROM AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE! EEEE, I'm so excited about that.

Oh, DB. I watched that episode last night where Olivia rescues herself by using a beaker of water and it was AWESOME and then there was a giant single-"celled" cold virus-slug thingy and I had to roll my eyes so hard that my eyeballs hurt*.

*Possibly this is exaggerated. But oh, Fringe. REALLY!?! THIS IS NOT WHAT GIANT COLD VIRUSES WOULD LOOK LIKE. THEY'RE VIRUSES, NOT CELLS! If only they had said something like "a giant sinus infection bacteria cell" I could have gone with it.

Wow, I hope work has been okay? Now, I'm worried. You'll get to my little story when you can. It's certainly waited long enough.

About Fringe. I'm hopeless since I remember very little about this show. When I have low expectations, well, I don't pay close attention. I don't remember the time machine but interesting theory. ;-)

I still don't know why Peter doesn't remember being ill. Either they haven't explained it or I've forgotten it. It's hard for me to spoil you, then, right?

I CANNOT WAIT TO FIND OUT PETER'S REACTION WHEN HE LEARNS HE WAS SNATCHED FROM AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE! EEEE, I'm so excited about that.
Excited? It's funny when you don't like a show. I never even anticipated or did this much thinking about it. I just popped another DVD in and sorted through my bills from 1997. I never tried to guess anything or anything. Just watched. When something exciting happened it was always a complete surprise. I expected nothing.

Hee! Fringe's science is iffy. Seriously, there is a definite suspension of reality going on. I mean we later deal with alternate universes! And you know I I've always been intrigued with AUs. ;-)

Hee, agreed with [livejournal.com profile] ivanolix. It amuses me mostly. :)

(There was one time I made cream cheese and salsa dip right before watching Fringe because I DIDN'T THINK. So, that's a memo I made to myself afterward. *shudders* )

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2011-02-24 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Fringe is definitely NOT a watch while eating show. Yikes.

*laughs* Well, okay! I'm glad the breakup wasn't traumatic?
