TV: day 6, "The Killing"

I watched episode six of The Killing. Blah blah blah things I don't like that I continue to dislike. I don't like how the setup negatively impacts Sarah's relationship with Holder and I don't like what it could do to her son's life. (And her fiancé, but the show and I are ignoring him this week.) So: ditto everything I've said before about that.

Also, Sarah, it's gonna take a long time to pay fifty million dollars. Just sayin'. I did like that bit of dialogue between Sarah and her son, though. Refreshingly normal-sounding.

Sarah's friend (Reggie?) had a good point related to Sarah's son; her dialogue also continued the hints that Sarah's own background has some intersting history to it.

Moving on from that: I do have some things I prefer not to watch. Squirmy embarassment is one. Sometimes I used to turn off episodes of Friends because sitcoms cross that line a bit too often. It's why I could never get into The Office. Another thing I have a hard time watching: people about to make really big mistakes, especially when there's a big build-up toward the mistake.

So Stanley Larsen is probably going to make a really big mistake in the next episode, and I may read spoilers this time to brace myself before watching.

I can see how he would have this mindset that justice the mob way is better than justice in a courtroom. Even leaving his thug life behind isn't necessarily going to change that attitude.

Bennet Ahmed and his wife Amber are slipping deeper into a pit of lies. Will it point to murder or something else (less?) sinister? I can't imagine anything good that they're covering up at this point.

Holder continues to be sneakily proficient, even while attempting to wear Leoben's wardrobe. (Yes, DB, I noticed your comment about that. Hee!) His own history seems just as cloudy as ever, with mystery man acting like a counselor (and possibly acting as a courier of information for the Larsens).

Nearly everything about the Larsen family's grief continues to be pitch-perfect for me. Mitch and her sister trying on the dress; her husband's anger; the older son wanting to help with the coffin.

I'm guessing Mitch's sister (Terry) and Stan's mob background are going to be at the forefront in future episodes, just from the groundwork established here. Terry has been interestingly erratic in her behavior, something that would easily be explained by 1) her own grief and 2) addiction of some kind. Alcohol yes, maybe drugs?

Richmond is also sinking deeper; the repercussions of Rosie's murder have truly pulled him off-course from everything he had planned. Good thing I like the actor playing the role, by the way. It's weird how he can be so knight on the white charger sometimes and yet have gotten this far in the political arena. A bit too much of a schism between the savvy and the innocent savior.

eta: in case this wasn't clear, I quite liked the episode. It felt a bit long, but the pacing was good and all the plot points advanced nicely. (Except the ones I don't like. But we all already know I don't like them, so...)

The Sarah Connor Chronicles--recap of episode 2.03 is here. Thank goodness it's not officially my turn again for a long time. Recapping while in a down mood: not recommended, especially for such a heartbreaking episode. Hopefully I was coherent, if not necessarily insightful.

I'm not worried about Holder. He's a big boy and it seems he knows her. This can't be the first time she's obsessed over a case. But the kid? He's at that age. She could lose him. I'm so torn! I can't imagine Partner Guy managing this all well. I just can't. So Sarah's losing her son (emotionally) or never finding Rosie's killer? Neither one sit well with me.

Stan isn't going to kill Bennett. Nope. But yes, he's angry and Bennett's a liar so it's going to be . . . uncomfortable.

Yes, DB, I noticed your comment about that. Hee!
Holder is definitely another candidate for WNTW. His outfit works for infiltrating loner kids who do drugs. But it won't earn him his captain's respect. (Glad I could make you laugh. This show isn't that big on humor. ;-))

Mitch and her sister with the dress was so real. Mitch is like in a daze and just lets her dress her. That sort of tired vulnerability is usually saved for those closest to us. Even the tired teasing about her sister being a brat felt right.

A bit too much of a schism between the savvy and the innocent savior.
It is weird, isn't it? But maybe his wife's death has brought out more of the white knight? Or maybe he's walked a balance. Either way, he's about to face quite a challenge.

His captain doesn't seem to be willing to give him any respect, period. Automatic disdain. Makes me wonder what happened that Holder is the one being transferred to Homicide. Did the captain not have a choice?

I don't know. I think that the captain doesn't like him. But if what we think about rehab is right (and that guy in the car was his sponsor), then maybe it's Holder's rep he doesn't like.

But he's already had to make some compromises; more are on the way, I'm sure.
No doubt.

(Hee, I'm talking like The Wire people. :-))
