fictional couples meme-thingy
Comment with a fandom, or two, or five; books, movies, tv shows. I'll tell you my favorite character, my favorite couple and what I like about the pairing, and... whatever else I'm supposed to say about them. Alas, I am too late/lazy to look up anyone's recent-ish version of this meme. You can tell me what else I should say, if you wish.
It's for SCIENCE, by the way. (Heh.) I thought I had figured out the key to my own (fictional) pairing preferences, but now I'm not so sure. Possibly I was too sick to be making sense when I figured out this supposed key.
Although the common cold really shouldn't cause that much loss of sense. *snickers* Possibly my favorite pairings have NO common ground?

Surprise me! Pick a fandom (that I know) that you think I don't know the answers to and go for it. :-)

*giggles a lot*
Okay! For Buffy the Vampire Slayer I shipped... Buffy and an unspecified generic kinda normal human guy at some point in the future! Heh. It's hard to pick from when the show was still on air, because I tend to like the canon love interests. Or not, because sometimes that's the point. (Buffy/Spike was indeed appealingly messed-up and not a relationship I could imagine working long-term. Nope, not even after he had a soul.)
What do I like about Buffy and this as-yet-unnamed normal guy of the future? I guess it's my hope that someday she'll get to do some of the normal-life things that she kept missing. I did, in fact, like Riley, and thought there were some good aspects to their relationship that she would appreciate more later, when she's cookies instead of cookie dough. Probably after another really bad relationship or two with whacked-out immortal dudes like, uh, the Immortal.
Favorite character on the show: Buffy, most of the time, but it's sort of like Starbuck and BSG--I really liked the ensemble.
So did you already know that? ;0)

If I had known you watched Buffy . . . I can't imagine you shipping her with Angel, Riley or Spike.
I really disliked Riley. He seemed so weak to me. I don't want my heroines to have normal lives! That's for you and me. I want them to be epic!!!
My favorite character on Buffy was Faith. She totally rocked. I didn't always like the things she did but I really did like that she made life into what she wanted of it. I liked Buffy a great deal. But Faith was riveting to watch.

*laughs* Yeah, I did like each of those pairings for various reasons, but I was never about any of those men being Buffy's One True Love. Okay, maybe Angel, but only as a Really Bad Idea One True Love. The one you never forget but you move on anyway.

Hm. My feelings for Riley fluctuated a LOT. But there was always something about him that appealed to me. Probably it's that "I like the underdog" tendency, and Riley was definitely an underdog in his relationship with Buffy. (
As for Faith... I thought she was fascinating to watch on Buffy, but it was only on Angel that I found I could root for her. Atonement arc, hurrah! And Faith/Angel (in a friendshippy way) is a favorite ship of mine.

BTW, I just rewatched Night Terrors and I think you got a shout-out. ;)

Doctor Who: my favorite character is Martha Jones. Sometimes the Eleventh Doctor and/or Rory impinge a bit on that status, but so far she reigns supreme.
Favorite ship: Martha/Mickey. Amy/Rory is gaining ground, however.
Why do I love Martha/Mickey? I was spoiled rotten for their surprise couple-dom well before I ever watched the pertinent episode. (You know the one... where Ten just WILL NOT DIE!
(Stupid LJ, I wasn't done!)
Anyway, I loved the idea, even though it wasn't foreshadowed at all. They're both gorgeous and competent and have a lot of common experiences. Also, I think they're a good balance; Martha could benefit from a bit of levity at times, and she's also a good anchor for Mickey, who seemed adrift at times.

Heh. I didn't think of my own fanfic at that moment, but I'm flattered you did.

Ellison is a close second, because I do see myself in him at times and because I wouldn't mind aspiring to be more like him (also at times).
So why wouldn't I ship my two favorite characters on the show?! Plus with the show ending the way it did, there's pretty much open ground for throwing them together for all sorts of reasons. I like that in closed canon sources.

Fav. character: Kara
fav. ship: Kara/Sam, because a) hot, b) angsty, c) HOT, d) actually a good match for each other in many ways, e) HOW ARE THOSE TWO REAL, THEY ARE SO HOT?!
Firefly:
fav. character: hmmm... Kaylee? It's actually hard to choose.
fav. ship: Okay, I think I'll just have to throw my hands in the air and admit that I usually go for canon ships and don't often bother creating my own or shipping non-canon pairings. I liked Kaylee/Simon and Inara/Mal, even though I find that second pair extremely problematic at times. Zoe/Wash are a fantastic couple and sometimes I'm really glad that the show didn't get to mess them up. (The movie, on the other hand...)
Honestly? My favorite relationship on that show was River/Simon. I just really liked the sibling support. Firefly wasn't much of a shippy show for me.
Star Trek: My dad is a big fan of any of the newer ST shows, starting with ST:NG. I didn't watch them very often; just enough to have a vague idea who's who on NG and that there were multiple shows to keep track of. (His favorite character is Captain Janeway, by the way.)
My knowledge of the original series is almost exclusively based on that shared knowledge that pop culture imparts.
The 2009 movie I saw three times, so:
fav. character: Spock
fav. pair: Uhura/Spock
Why? Gorgeous, competent and good for each other. :D
Patterns so far: pretty and competent people together. Bonus points if one is stoic/has something that makes it difficult for him/her to share emotions easily. More bonus points if the other one is okay with that.

I admit, I generally have a thing for "strong, steady guy/crazy, off-the-wall girl" myself. Occasionally, I ship the opposites, too. (ok, when I'm not, like, crack-shipping and all, that is)
Your father has excellent taste in Captains (although I think Sisko is still my fave).
