Halloween update

It's more fun to dress up and hand out candy than it was to dress up and collect candy. Another benefit: less stomach-ache later!

I'm wearing a witch costume, by the way. And offering boiled frogs' eyes, which is disconcerting to most of the children. I'm only offering them verbally; no frogs were harmed in the making of this post. And only to children old enough in theory to get that it's not a serious offer. ("Want some boiled frogs' eyes?" "Um... yes?")

One dashing Indiana Jones told me that normally he wouldn't take candy from a witch, but he'd make an exception for me. Heeeeee!

A quick TV observation: Once Upon a Time is very pretty, a bit silly in its own serious way, and on my list of shows to continue watching.

That last episode of Person of Interest snagged me in a fannish way. I'm tempted to write Catwoman/Batman Zoe Morgan/John Reese fic right now. She can call him John and he'll call her Ms. Morgan in that rumbly voice.

I'm not quite caught up with Person of Interest yet, but if you write fic for it, I will happily read it.

I dressed up as kind of the evil queen from Snow White to hand out candy. The husband was a Mexican bandito. The dogs were a jester and bumble bee. :P

I wish I'd thought of that - I'm sitting here grading tests and once I hand them back my students are going to be convinced I'm a witch. Might as well admit it upfront.

/bad teaching day.

Can I have a boiled frog's eye?

I ran out of boiled frogs eyes. I'm not sure if the replacement offering counts as a trick or a treat.

I didn't expect to see her so soon this time, was my first thought. Then I wondered where that idea came from--I'd never laid eyes on the dame before today, I was sure of it.

Speaking of eyes, she was easy on them. Blonde hair styled in careful waves that had been mussed at some point, red lipstick covering full lips, hazel eyes that gave me a slantwise glance as she stood in my office door.

"Mr. Conoy?" she asked.

"That's me," I told her.

"I don't have an appointment," she said. She didn't seem particularly apologetic about it.

"Well, you came at an opportune moment," I told her. Opportune meant I hadn't had any other clients all day; not that she needed to know that.

I stood up. "Ben Conoy. Detective, as you already know. And your name is?"

"Kara Thrace."

I put out my hand for her to shake, because I wasn't above using what John called my "cheap parlor tricks" to my advantage. It didn't work quite the way I expected, though. I saw flashes of her, and me, and what's more, it felt like it went both directions. Miss Thrace's eyes opened wide for a second, then she narrowed them in suspicion.

I didn't say anything, just showed her to the chair across from my desk.

"What can I do for you, Miss Thrace?"

"I'm looking for something."

I waited for her to say more; instead she gave me the suspicious glance from earlier. Finally she said, "I'm only here for one reason: because I need someone with certain contacts."

"Contacts?"

"I understand you're a member of Cavil's Gang." Her lips pursed a bit at the last words.

"Old information," I told her. "I left."

"Really." Her tone made her disbelief clear.

"Really," I replied.

"I only know one person who got out and made it stick," she told me.

"Athena," I said. "Now you know two."

She looked both relieved and disappointed. Starting to stand, she said, "Well, this is a heartwarming tale, but you're no good to me without a connection to them."

"Just because I don't swim in that stream anymore doesn't mean I don't know where the current runs."

Okay, so maybe my analogy wasn't so good. The lady let out an unladylike-like snort, so I added, "I didn't say I didn't have any connections. Just that I'm not part of the gang anymore."

"That's not how I heard things work," she said.

I looked at her, trying to decide what she needed to know. "There are... factions. And not everyone is as extreme as Athena."

Athena refused to see her own sister. Granted, Sharon was Cavil's moll now, but still... blood was blood, my ma always told me.

"Athena has her reasons," Miss Thrace replied, looking defensive.

"You're close to her," I stated.

"She's married to my best friend," admitted Miss Thrace.

"And she's the one who told you to see me," I deduced.

She didn't answer me, so I pressed for more. "If Athena thinks I can help, I'd like to at least know what you're looking for."

"An artifact. The Arrow of Apollo."

I sucked in a breath. One of the flashes... that was what I'd seen.

Eee! Definitely a treat. (Somehow, this seems to be the week for happy Kara/Leoben AUs. Or at least happy in the sense of not involving torture or genocide.)

I put out my hand for her to shake, because I wasn't above using what John called my "cheap parlor tricks" to my advantage. It didn't work quite the way I expected, though. I saw flashes of her, and me, and what's more, it felt like it went both directions.

Okay, that's intense. And fun. But I love that in this AU he uses the visions rather than being controlled by them. Well, except maybe this once. :)

And yay, he's escaped Cavil and made something of himself, even if he's not exactly a success. And he's got connections...still playing a deep game. Still swimming in the stream, even if that is a terrible metaphor.

Oh, I love this. Yay! ::flails::

augh, can't fix typo now!

Heeee! *grins* I'm glad you enjoyed it. I basically giggled the whole time I wrote it, trying to include both the genre clichés and BSG-verse stuff that worked with it.

[identity profile] rirenec.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
This is so funny, I love the style of it and, well everything. I so needed to read something like this today and it would be really good as a longer running AU, hint, hint. Brilliant! :)

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Alas, my muse doesn't really care about AU stories. I'm not sure why. (I also tend to read them less than non-AU stories, so... *shrug*)

But I'm glad you had fun reading it; it made me laugh to write it. And if you want to take the idea and run with it, feel free. :) I'd even offer unsolicited advice about it! Heeee!

[identity profile] rirenec.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, I'll leave it as the perfection as it is, though I've got BSG film noir in my head now, like the end of S2 Fringe :)
(Just realised that I need more Sam icons... Humm, that will be a nice waste of an hour on Sunday to screen shot pretty).

Yeah, it's not exactly hard work to look at many, many pictures of Michael Trucco. Good heavens, that man is ridiculously good-looking.

I'm really liking Once Upon a Time. I hadn't even planned on watching it but I like it. :-)

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It was very enjoyable!

[identity profile] lizardbeth-j.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
SHE IS TOTALLY HIS CATWOMAN. D and I who watch together said that almost at the same time while watching. If you write, I'll totally read it!

And also, yes, I don't know why PoI is kind of fannishly grabbing me, too? I mean, sure, I love the Batman-ishness (that's a word, I swear!) but it's not exactly what I usually want to fic. But it's ... grabby. IDEK,

And OUaT too in a less serious way. it reminds me of good crackfic.

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Remind me not to go looking at comms again. Nobody seemed to love Zoe but me! (Although there wasn't much bashing, at least. It was all, "Eh, she wasn't as bad as I expected" or "She was okay, but Reese totally likes Finch more!" WHERE'S THE CATWOMAN LOVE?!)

(And I wrote it. Well... I wrote something. There may be a sequel.)

[identity profile] lizardbeth-j.livejournal.com 2011-11-02 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
DUDE! WHAT?? Zoe was fantastic fun. And she's CATWOMAN. And she's also Paige Turco who I have loved since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! What's not to love? pfft! They are sadly unenlightened people.

shall check later when kiddo is abed! :D :D
