Yuletide letter (2011)
Thanks for signing up for one of my selected fandoms this year. I hope you enjoy creating a story. I'll blather on a bit about some of my preferences, but you're already writing a story for me in a fandom I like, so relax and have fun! These are suggestions, not orders.
Polyamory doesn't appeal to me, nor infidelity, except as reflected within the canon source. No rape or 'dub-con' or incest, please; relationships with a big power imbalance are a turn-off as well. Also, sex within a story is fine but I'd rather not read a how-to manual.
I tend to be a canon purist; that being said, I can enjoy AU when there's a compelling story to go with it. I frequently like stories with babies, original characters, and even character death, so those are definitely not off limits.
Stuff I love: Genfic, character studies, angst, plotty fic, comedy, epic female friendship, epic female/male friendship, happy endings, sad endings, muddled-up middles, five-times stories, totally made-up backstories for minor characters, moments we didn't see in the source fandom, future fics, references to mythology/fairy tales, languages, repressed feelings and pining, women saving the world(s), morally ambiguous women reluctantly doing the right thing...
...and of course, adventure, sword fights, and true love.
Here's what I wrote for my request fandoms, along with a bit more.
Ultraviolet (tv):
I'd really like some thoughtful genfic that includes Angie March. Some possibilities: Ensemble fic, particularly post-canon. Interaction among the female characters. Angie and her daughter, dealing with not only their family losses but Rose getting older. Oh, and Angie/Vaughan, gen or het, requited or unrequited.
I don't expect all of that in one story--though that would be kind of amazing, yeah? Things I loved about this short-lived show: Angie being competent and self-contained, Vaughan's cynicism combined with a smidge of hopefulness, Frances and her pragmatism. I liked Michael; he worked well as our POV in the series, but I found the characters already immersed in that world to be more interesting in the long run. (As for shipping Angie/Vaughan, I have a weakness for pining. Honestly I could see a relationship working out for those two in the future... or not. Heh.)
Also, crossover with Buffy or Angel? If that sounds like fun to you, go right ahead.
Bend It Like Beckham:
I'd love some fic about Jess in the period after the movie ended. Gen or het. Jess dealing with culture shock in the US would be awesome. Ongoing Jess and Jules friendship. Oh, and I'm curious if Jules and Jess would find adapting to a new culture equally difficult. Jess returning to the UK after finishing a degree would be nifty as well. Jess and Jules' flawed families are favorites of mine too, so ensemble fic would be very appealing.
I loved Jess's desires to stay true to herself and still keep her ties to her family and honor what her family values.
As for potential hetfic: I liked Jess/Joe, but I'm not a die-hard fan of the pair. You could make them each other's one true loves or have them break up messily when the long-distance thing doesn't work out, or ignore Joe entirely.
The Passage - Justin Cronin
So much space to play with in this fandom! Gen or gen-ish fic, please. I'd love more with Amy and what we didn't get to to see: Wolgast being turned, her drifting across the US, her connection with the Twelve. Or going forward--interactions with Lish and Peter. And if that doesn't interest you, more about Sara and Hollis and their band of survivors.
This book is a sprawling mess, but I'm a sucker for world-building, even the messy versions of it. While Amy is by far the most interesting to me, delving into almost any part of the story would make me happy.
