Yuletide story reveal
I'm sure you're all shocked to learn that I wrote Person of Interest fic for Yuletide. Heh. Though my story did have three elements that aren't typical in what I write.
1. LOTS of dialogue
2. actual plot
3. zombies
Appetite for Destruction was the story I wrote for my recipient. (Yes, the name makes me laugh.) Lyrstzha requested Reese and Finch, slash or gen, and then mentioned an interest in an AU with The Sentinel as inspiration, or a zombie apocalypse. Not knowing anything about The Sentinel, I decided to try the zombies.
What amuses me about this is that I really don't have much interest in zombies. I've never seen a zombie movie and I don't watch TV shows with zombies. Basically everything I know about zombies is gleaned from that great sea of trivia known as pop culture. Oh, and one Halloween episode of The Simpsons. *laughs*
I even specified no zombies in my own Yuletide letter.
Ah well. Zombies did indeed come to life as I wrote. Lizardbeth deserves a medal for reading multiple drafts of my story; she provided lots of practical ideas about zombie invasions and kept me aligned with the show's 'rules' aboutmagic technology. Daybreak was a helpful cheerleader and gave me a place to put the not-actually-dead body of patient zero. I wanted to bury him, but that brought up some other practical considerations, especially since I wanted to keep the zombies on Manhattan Island at the start. She suggested putting him in a car trunk.
Since I'mridiculous thorough, I did some research to make the zombies a bit more plausible. By research I mostly mean look up the rabies virus and other viruses on google.
The zombie fic ended up being 4500 words; I was still editing through December 23, so I didn't write another full-length story for anyone else this time around.
Speaking of editing, I'm now debating changing one paragraph near the end, to have Finch reflecting more on the probability of Reese dying out there. I don't know if the bit about gifts at the end does an adequate job of conveying Finch's emotions. Hm...
This was my first year to write something for the Yuletide Madness archive--just a quick fic with Detective Carter (among other characters), because I was worried that no one would write a story with her in a sympathetic light*. Points of Departure has snippets with Reese, Finch, and Carter, and how their lives all changed in 2006.
*Thankfully I was wrong; jedibuttercup wrote a fantastic Carter POV story that I've already recced. (Hah, I knew I was right about the author!)
If you're interested in more Person of Interest fanfic, Liz's story City Lights is an excellent character study for John Reese, set just after episode 1.10.
Hopefully the PofI fic momentum will continue, since I already have over a thousand words written for that second Zoe Morgan/John Reese fic. Unfortunately John is still being far too cautious. This isn't helpful, John!

although actually I am surprised you have a Madness fic, as I haven't even looked there yet. And yes, I DEMAND Zoe/Reese, so keep going! *waves pompoms* And I should write something longer, too, since I still feel a bit bad for making mine so short. :)

Oh, and Zoe and John are busy negotiating stuff, so...
