your assignment is to write a title for this post

Hi! *waves* I've been feeling a bit swamped with the new school year, but my brain has been nicer about it than last year, so that's a plus. In other words, some of the depression-related stuff is not so bad right now, in spite of stressful situations. Which is good.

At some point last spring I declared that I was going to alter at least five items of clothing in May. Pretty sure I missed doing that before the end of May, but I did do several sewing-related things over the summer: sliding elastic inside the waistband of a few jeans and trousers, fixing some tears and hems, etc. I even sewed a couple of new shirts, using a really simple pattern. The second one turned out quite cute, if I say so myself. (And it was made from a curtain panel and men's XL tee-shirt, whic makes it weird unique.) I haven't done any pics yet because my current camera doesn't take good pics when I use the timer. Maybe I should dig out the older camera and try that instead.

Anyway. Media stuff now:

Finished reading The Gift of Asher Lev, and I'm not sure what I think. I sort of knew how the end was going to work out, and I don't know if I like it or not. Potok's writing style is catchy, which makes me want to take my current stuck-on-this-and-can't-finish fic idea and rewrite the whole thing in first person present tense.

Maybe that's why I'm so stuck on the fic, come to think of it. Heh. (I really don't plan to rewrite it in first person present tense.)

Reading Potok's work so soon after The Poisonwood Bible was an exercise in frustration at times, because PB had the voices of four women alternating throughout the story. Asher Lev only had Asher's voice. I wanted to know what the other characters were thinking and feeling, especially Asher's wife and mother.

I've started watching Scandal--through episode 2.03 so far--and I'm certain that the way I appreciate it is NOT what the show creators intended. It's a soap opera/procedural, and Olivia Pope is the center of the show. She's been labeled (by herself and others) as a white hat, but I don't believe it. She's trying to do the right thing (I think? by her definition of it, anyway), but at this point I find myself rooting for (former) district attorney dude to find out all the laws she's broken and bring her to justice.

Also, the show's favorite couple is my anti-couple, the pair I find completely ridiculous to the point of actually yelling at my TV screen when they're together. Hee!

It really is fun in a sudsy, over the top way. What makes it perfect, though, is that enough of the information is verbal that I can grade papers while 'watching'. Which is why I'm moving forward with it instead of deleting it from my Netflix queue.

Scandal has edged out Longmire and Nikita in recent viewing for the simple reason that I actually like the other two enough to watch, and I haven't had time lately.

"Also, the show's favorite couple is my anti-couple, the pair I find completely ridiculous to the point of actually yelling at my TV screen when they're together. Hee!"

Me too! I can't with Olitz! Like empirically, I can get why people think they have wonderful chemistry, but I don't feel it. And I think he turns Olivia into a bit of a quivering mess.

But I love Mellie and Huck!!! <3 And I like David.

I can't STAND Olivia and Fritz together. I can't see those two as a couple at all. i think it's because the only other thing I've seen Tony Goldwyn in is as the bad guy in Ghost, and while I didn't make the connection at first, the first time he was onscreen in Scandal I had a very strong negative reaction to his character. Plus, I had watching this strong and in-charge woman turn into such a quivering mess over a man.

*joins you in yelling at the TV screen*

I saw Ghost exactly once, so it's doubtful that I have any residual Goldwyn vibes. I just think FITZ IS THE WORST, and therefore I can't ship him. With anyone, really. BECAUSE HE'S THE WORST.

And yeah, Olivia is emphatically not her best around him. BECAUSE HE'S THE WORST.

FITZ IS THE WORST, ROSE. There was that time HE THREATENED HER WITH A GUN AND TOOK HER BOOTS OFF and my skin is crawling just remembering it.

(WHY, SCANDAL, WHY. The show could survive a presidential assassination. Mellie could rule the VP from behind the scenes, OK?)

I had managed to forget about that Fitz moment. Possibly I was distracted by the time he killed a sick woman in her hospital bed with his bare hands.

I do not have a userpic awful enough for Fitz.

Y'know, I went into this aware that a few people weren't fans of Olivia/Fitz, and I figured, "Eh, I'll probably end up shipping them," since that's what I do: I ship canon pairs. But NOPE. All it took was that first episode and I was already anti-shipping them. (Mostly because FITZ IS THE WORST.)

Mellie, hee, she is so splendid and awful in the best possible ways.

Yeah, I'm a canon shipper too, and I heard so much about their chemistry that it's what convinced me to try the show but no--I don't like Olivia with him. My only ship for Scandal since the very beginning was Huck/Quinn...and actually I like the relationship they have now more than I would an actual ship. (Won't say anything more than that for fear of spoiling you but they develop an interesting bond!)

Yeah, sometimes I need that 'mindless' show that I can watch while doing other stuff. Sherlock, while I liked it enough, is not that show. It's hard to find shows like this. Like . . . Hart of Dixie. Yes. I will look forward to that sudsy show's return.

I'm debating if I should plan to watch the rest of season two of Scandal before season 3 starts. Because honestly, I'm not sure I care enough to watch the show while it's actually airing. It's a "grade papers" show, not a "keep up with it because I really like it" show.

Sudsy is a calming relief now and then, isn't it. :)

I tried to watch "Scandal," got bored, and turned it off about halfway through the pilot! I don't do well with modern political shows. Possibly because of living in a political town.

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2013-09-13 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, yeah, if you didn't like the pilot enough to keep it up, it wouldn't be of much interest. Even with the case of the week aspects, there's a strong ongoing political story as part of the structure as well.

I am pretty sure the whole Fitz-Olivia = DESTINED FOREVER thing is why I didn't manage to get past, like, episode four of season two. I think that was the episode, anyway. I know I just abruptly stopped watching. (I want to watch more! The show has that whole revenge/lmission impossible feel to it at times. and I love the Warriors in Suits idea)

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2013-09-30 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Season two did give that vibe in the beginning... and then it sort of turned everything upside down. And then it did it again. And I feel like my head has been spun around so many times that I have vertigo and I don't know what the heck the show is trying to tell us, but it's undeniable that Fitz and Olivia are so much worse together than they are when separated. So.

The last part of season two was so completely crack-tastic that I don't even know what to make of it.
