hypothetical gardening

I'm starting to get that running out of time feeling about summer. It's been such a lovely one, but there are so many things I wanted to do before work starts up again.

I read The Sandcastle Girls, by Chris Bohjalian. It was reasonably good, and not too long. Most of TSC's action (all of the stuff worth your time) is set in Aleppo, Syria, during and after the genocide of ethnic Armenians by the Turkish government during World War I. Honestly I think I liked it most for the historical aspects, and for two of the minor characters.

I would probably read another novel by Bohjalian--a later one, rather than an earlier one--if the subject caught my attention. But I'm not in a hurry to track one down.

This should probably be gardening week. Except I already have a swollen hand from overly-enthusiastic use of a hoe or pitchfork, and my left foot is all itchy due to ant bites. This is putting quite a dent in my gardening week ambitions. A fall garden seemed like such a good idea, though. If only the work would get itself done without any human intervention.

Time for the robots to do their thing. Why don't we have robot gardeners anyway?

Because robot gardeners don't eat? We don't want them to rise up against us or anything.

Now I'm thinking of the 'leather ship' that surely must have existed to make the clothing everyone wore on Earth 1 in BSG. Maybe not Centurions, but someone was stitching those leather garments!

Actually, who made all of those leather garments throughout the series? Granted, head!Six didn't need a tailor, but everyone else did. And maintenance! Who made repairs to those leather spacesuits?

Dude, it had to be the Centurions. As soon and D'Anna and Lee shook hands part of that deal was the Centurions handed over some leather clothing for good faith.

Yup. No wonder they were pissed off later!

Yes, I'm starting to panic about all the things I need to get done, and that I'm running out of time! Eek!

I read Midwives by Chris Bohjalian back when it was an Oprah book. I honestly don't recall if I liked it or not.

I first heard of Bohjalian when he was interviewed recently about his newest book, Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands. My library system didn't have it available online, though, so I ended up reading Sandcastle Girls instead, since I could download it right then.

Having just finished Close Your Eyes..., I have the following thoughts: yes, this was a better novel than SG, at least for me as the audience. Bohjalian did an excellent job of voicing a smart teenage girl for the protagonist. But there was still something lacking for me, some element that didn't quite gel for me as a reader. The sucker punch near the end felt unearned, and I had the same feeling about the sucker punch in SG.

So he's not on my list of authors to avoid, but unless the topic interests me, I doubt I'll bother reading more of his.
