Oh, Star Wars fandom. There's nothing quite so awful, is there? Yet again, there's ongoing drama with fangroups A through Z... which is why I'm reluctantly admitting to outlining a possible idea for post-The Rise of Skywalker fanfic. If I manage to coax it into existence, it will satisfy me and probably no one else.

Unfortunately, that fanfic idea is centered around Finn. I say unfortunately because that means it won't really fit the upcoming halfamoon celebration, which focuses on female characters. I'm bringing up the topic because hey, halfamoon is almost here! Here are this year's prompts. Yes, the prompts are available early.

Hm. Maybe I can coax something Gaby-related into existence before the end of February. I have a couple of long-unfinished fanworks about her...

Somewhat related to this: via goodbyebird, The Bodies of the Girls Who Made Me: Fanfic and the Modern World is Seanan McGuire's commentary on fanfiction and writing as a (white) woman in a world that focuses more on a (narrowly defined) male perspective.

Write your Finn fic!

I don't dislike him. Sometimes reading a story gives me insight. I'm not sure why you like him so much but would like to know.

A book about fandom, centered in white middle classness? I'm curious and not all at the same time.

Sigh. It is the day to recognize the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It would be nice to to have works that highlight other group's experiences in fandom. Not fault of hers, just that would be really interesting.

The link is not for a book; it's for an article--a short-ish one at that--about fandom and writing as a woman / writing about women. (Also, while McGuire is white, she didn't grow up middle-class; her family experienced many years of barely getting by on food stamps, food insecurity, moving around because they couldn't pay rent, etc.)

But yeah, I wasn't thinking about any MLK related recs, even though I'm sitting here, all lazy and relaxed because I have the day off from work. Hm. I'll have to dig around and see what I can find; it's gonna be a quest now.

edited to add: I think what I liked most about Finn was part of what got left out of his actual story. I loved the possibilities behind the idea of a child soldier who was able to escape from that. Plus, the Force-sensitivity that I perceived from his first film. Even the child soldier part should have made for one of the most interesting things to include in this trilogy... but they didn't ever do it.

(I have lots of links to posts written by black fans about how awful Star Wars fandom has been, but I think I'd rather widen my scope and focus, for a whole lot of reasons.)

E-mail was fine today. Chat too, I was home all day. I'm watching Blackish on Hulu right now.

I didn't like season 2 of Stranger Things so much. I'm just feeling they are never gonna win. :-(
