It means pine-nut in Italian, if you believe Wikipedia... (and don't we all?)

Paying bills, trying to do lesson plans, etc. while finishing the Angel season one re-watch. (Yeah, I got sidetracked from that a while ago with Buffy season five, then starting to watch Due South for Callum-related reasons and... what was I saying?) My reason for posting is this epiphany. I HEART PINOCCHIO. Seriously. Who's my favorite or second favorite (depends on the day) character on BSG? Leoben. Which did I prefer, BtVS or Angel? Angel, even though Buffy was probably a better show in most aspects.

In other words, I like the bad boy who wants to be a real boy but he never goes about it the right way and doesn't quite succeed. Or maybe it's that quest for self-awareness that pings with me. Hm. Nope, I think it's the bad boy aspect.

Gah I couldn't stand Angel. It just held no interest for me, and I actually loved Buffy and Angel together. I just found the show kind of boring, and David Boreanaz not compelling enough to watch... he's grown so much as an actor, though, and he does much better in Bones.

I think I only loved Angel in terms of Angel and Buffy, while I loved Buffy for being... well, Buffy. Heh.

Aw. Angel was much-beloved by me, although more for the ensemble (yeah, there's a shocker) than for him individually. But that theme of becoming a real boy--it definitely works for me in that show. Plus I have a huge crush on Lindsay McDonald (Christian Kane) and I adore watching him and Lilah be snarky and evil together. They're awesome.

[identity profile] pataka02.livejournal.com 2007-09-05 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Heh... you, an ensemble lover? Crazy!

I kept up with it sporadically, but I was more or less unimpressed with the storylines, etc. (some of which I felt to be a lesser retread of BtVS). And the whole Cordelia/Angel thing made me gag, mainly because the idea of Cordelia becoming so exalted a being was too bizarre to stomach. But I did like Doyle a lot...

I've been trying to think of shows where I love the ensemble completely, and BtVS comes pretty close, though Buffy is my main love and Giles a close seocnd... but the best ensemble show for me was Everwood, which was so well-written that even when I got frustrated with the characters, I still loved them. Even the ones who didn't appeal to me much were still interesting.

Eh, I hadn't been watching Buffy before I started watching both series at the same time, more or less. So I didn't catch up on old Buffy eps until the dvds became available. The tone of the two shows felt different enough so I didn't spend much time looking for similarities. Angel really hooked me with the first season and it wasn't much like BtVS at all at that point--much smaller cast, different thematic elements...

As for other ensemble shows, I think BSG's cast is stellar. Was Everwood that show with the youngish doctor-father-widower? I think I only watched it once. Heroes seems to have a reasonably good group of actors but I wasn't interested enough to keep watching.

It's true, BtVS and Angel had very different thematic elements... I just think BtVS was more successful at pulling off the whole allegory thing with high school and demons.

BSG is an amazing ensemble, and Heroes is pretty good as well. I'd say that Friday Night Lights is currently one of the strongest. I highly recommend Everwood to you, if you're interested. It's a great drama without being too soap operatic, and there's some amazing acting involved.

Lindsay?! Rose, this is right up there with Benry. I couldn't stand Lindsay. But wasn't Daniel Kim on Angel at Wolfram and Heart? He's much cuter as Jin.

So distracted by Daniel. Bad boys. Yeah, you've got it for them. And I'm sorry I didn't write the pinocchio fic. :-( I want to write one where Leoben gets to be a real boy. Just for you.

I loved this quest on Angel because I loved Angel. (And because he knew that he was never going to be redeemed.) I actually liked it better on Spike because he had no soul. Like Louis in Interview with a Vampire. Even Arnold in T2. Or Peter Pan who will never grow up. The Tucks in Tuck Everlasting. Everyone just wants to be real.

(I need to think of more bad boys. Did you like the prince in The Princess Bride?)

If Leoben is maybe your second favorite character on BSG, who is your favorite?

WHAT? But, but... He's so adorable! I'll freely admit that Benry is not attractive 'cept for the whole 'I will plot and scheme to get my way' factor, but Christian Kane is gorgeous! Look!

Here he's being a big geek with Amy Acker:

And here he's just fine:

Plus, he had awesome comic timing on Angel, he has a tinge of Okie accent when he talks, he sings and plays the guitar! Come on!

Okay, fine. I'll just keep him to myself.

But wasn't Daniel Kim on Angel at Wolfram and Heart? He's much cuter as Jin.

Heh, Daniel Dae Kim was Gavin Park on Angel. Scary that I know his character without having to look it up (and he wasn't even in season one). As for being cuter as Jin, I'm undecided. Gavin had some snazzy suits. DDK is aging quite nicely, though.

I loved this quest on Angel because I loved Angel. (And because he knew that he was never going to be redeemed.) I actually liked it better on Spike because he had no soul.

The other day I read a Buffy-fic in which Spike had been, um, shanshu-ed--turned human (that Shan-shu prophecy, remember?), and he and Buffy were married. It just felt so weird--not what I expected at all, because I really didn't want Spike to get the reward. See, I'm evil--I like my bad non-human boys to try being human, and fail miserably. Heh.

(I need to think of more bad boys. Did you like the prince in The Princess Bride?)

Only for his comic abilities.

If Leoben is maybe your second favorite character on BSG, who is your favorite?

Kara, definitely. Even though we're not at all alike and I don't aspire to become like her. Like you, I've had to struggle to develop any sense of a Lee point-of-view.

Hee! I've inspired Rose to picspam! You are so cute. I just don't see it. Like I can kind of see the CKR. CKR has the older guy mystery and when he grins, well I can really see it even though it doesn't do it for me. And CKR oozes talent.

But Christian Kane? Nope. In the picture, I find Amy Acker cuter. Hee. I don't blame him, I think it's totally the Lindsay character. Yes, he was funny but kind of in a sad way. He wasn't even scary. He was just a boy.

See, I'm evil--I like my bad non-human boys to try being human, and fail miserably.
I'm so glad to hear you say that. My Leoben Pinnochio boy was going to try so hard. It's the trying that's so interesting and painful.

Kara, definitely.
Yay! *hugs Rose* How did I not know this? But deep down I must have known we had this in common. I just understand her so easily though, I probably couldn't be friends with someone like her in RL. But TV is so great because we can see the Kara underneath that not everyone sees. Levels. It's so fascinating. And I'm better with Lee now, though it's hard for me. But yay, another Kara person!

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2007-09-06 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
In the picture, I find Amy Acker cuter. Hee.

Well, that's because her very presence causes cute puppies to apparate and start frolicking. And I can't fathom anyone not thinking Amy Acker is all things adorable and gorgeous. Yup.

I guess I really do get to keep Christian all to myself, then.

My Leoben Pinnochio boy was going to try so hard. It's the trying that's so interesting and painful.

Yes, that's it exactly. I think the motivations for Pinocchio are interesting, too--Spike wanted Buffy's love, Leoben wants Kara's... but they often did the wrong thing because of that. And they didn't perceive it as wrong because they're not 'real boys,' which is why they always fail.

I just understand her so easily though, I probably couldn't be friends with someone like her in RL.

Heh, definitely. Even with the quadrangle of doom, I still felt sympathy for Kara; but she would totally make me nuts in person. (And really, Kara is always my favorite character... which is good, considering how often Leoben's scenes are cut.)

p.s. If you don't mind trying some babyfic in Harry Potter fandom, go read this Bill/Fleur babyfic! (http://honey-wheeler.livejournal.com/51724.html)

Hee, yep, he's all yours. I won Daniel, though. :-)

Oh Rose, I finally had time to read that baby fic! What lovely writing. Subtle and understated. I loved the bit with the flowers. And it more about Fleur than the baby. Thank you so much for recommending it!

Wow, a good writer can make you have sympathy for just about anyone, even characters you don't think much about. There really is a goldmine of HP minor characters for fan ficcers to write about now.
