babies, babies, babies
Got some stuff written for my
femme_fic story. One thing that helped:
rj_anderson mentioned writing a scene as a play as a technique for getting past writer's block. For me it was both hard and useful--I hate writing dialogue. It's not easy. This exercise forced me to examine what key points need to be revealed through conversation rather than thoughts. Plus, y'know... actual dialogue for the story... a nice benefit. I still have lots to do, but at least I accomplished something other than staring at what I've already written.
Also, a ficlet: this ended up being a weird hybrid of two prompts: Sam, braid and the AU where Kara is raising Kacey. (Are y'all conspiring to keep me writing Kara/Sam forever? Where's the prompts for Gaeta, or Cally, or... someone else not Kara or Sam?) Anyway, it's... very, very fluffy. Sugary sweet. May cause cavities.
"Hold still!" Sam muttered. He didn't know why he bothered; it hadn't worked saying it the five times before. Whimpering for a second, Kacey wriggled out of his grasp, then turned to face him with a defiant expression on her face. Who knew that one small child's hair would be such a problem? Sam sighed. He didn't want to scold her--she flinched enough around him as it was.
"Hey, Kacey? Let's get your hair braided the rest of the way so it will be pretty for Kara." He used the nicest voice he could manage. She didn't come any closer but at least she wasn't looking scared or edging further away.
"Come on! Otherwise Kara will think I'm a..." He paused. Saying frak-up in front of the kid--probably a bad idea. "Nincompoop."
Kacey's eyes widened and he saw a flash of her smile.
"And we don't want Kara to call me a nincompoop," he repeated.
She giggled.
"Nincompoop." Each time Sam said it, he edged a little closer.
She pointed at him. "Sam."
"Yes, Sam. Can I finish braiding your hair?"
"Ni-poo!" shrieked Kacey, and laughed. He decided this was a yes.
Carefully picking her up, he set her on the chair again and worked on the left braid. Her hair was so fine--he felt like he had giant hands while he worked at keeping the slick strands in order. At first he kept his mouth firmly shut; he was afraid of saying a cuss word by accident while he clumsily braided. But Kacey started turning her head to look at him, an expectant expression on her face. He dutifully repeated the magic word: "Nincompoop."
"Ni-poo!"
"Nincompoop."
"Nimpoo!"
Almost done, thank the Gods. He tied a ribbon around the tip of the braid. Success--weirdly, he felt as triumphant as the last time his team won against the Panthers.
Kara entered the room. "Hey, look at you! Did Sam braid your hair?"
Kacey nodded enthusiastically. "Nimpoo!" she yelled, pointing at Sam.
"What's she saying?" asked Kara.
"You got me," replied Sam with a shrug.

I made Rose write babyfic! I am content.

Yes... content and evil.

*sigh* Everything from Sam's awkwardness around the kid to Kacey being a little scared of him to the very realistic toddler behavior (one thing that I dislike about most babyfic - and that scares me about writing it - is the completely wrong depiction of kids, like, bottle-feeding blobs who speak in complete sentences). Plus, the giant hands trying to braid Kacey's hair - awww.
Thanks for giving in to the Kara/Sam pleading once again. *G*

Sure, I'll post it to PoD... with a wee bit of guilt, since the people who do

(And I share your writing woes, except I'm having it over narrative. Sigh. But yes, rereading your own words over and over, not such a good strategy, huh? *trudges back to word mines*)
Can't wait to see your next fic!

I think what helped me stay focused while I did the dialogue-only exercise was not having access to the word document. I was in yet another meeting, with only a notepad. So I couldn't look at what I'd written before.

You should totally write more Kara and Sam.

I think you did Kacey justice here, good balance of scared and happy kidness.
Thanks for posting.
