bsg episode: Maelstrom

I should first say that I was spoiled for this episode, so I wasn't completely surprised by the end. I knew it was a possibility that Kara would die. Plus I was "friended" by someone with the spoilery name of starbuckisdead before I saw the episode. (Why would someone do that? I don't get it. Apparently he/she friended a lot of BSG fans using that name before the episode aired on the West coast. People are weird.)

So here's my grand statement, which has probably been typed in a lot of other LJ's in a lot of ways the last few days: NOTHING that involves Leoben is straightforward. Kara's destiny probably didn't end at her apparent death. I'm not spoiled for any other episodes this season, so I have no idea how/if this might go on. AND... I could be completely wrong.

I may type more later on, when I've watched again and after I've read some other people's entries. Or I'll save it and finally finish that Leoben and mythology essay I've been writing for a month or so. But this was definitely an episode made for me. Kara! Leoben! My favorite characters! I'm having a hard time being analytical or critical, heh.

The tone was remarkably consistent--a wistful sadness pervaded the episode. Kara's discussions with Lee gave a feeling of returning to their starting point--friends who regret that they don't share more. Her brief interaction with Sam had a similar sense of "this is all that we can be." The one relationship that progressed was Kara/head!Leoben. (Yay head!Leoben! Canon, natalexx, canon!) Oh, and Kara and her mother, but that, to me, was part of the Leoben connection. I don't know that her real mother would have actually been like that in their final scene together.

That Kara/head!Leoben connection led to Kara embracing what she felt was her destiny rather than fighting it. I don't know what it means for later in the show.


I'm starving. Time to eat dinner, re-watch the episode and obsessively parse every minute detail with others. Because *watching* the episode is only half the fun, hee!

Heh, yeah I feel *really* special now.

Because Kara "accepted her destiny" and...now what? I mean, if her destiny was to *die*, that is INCREDIBLY LAME. That's one of the many reasons I just can't believe that was...the end.

I don't think of Kara as suicidal. Who/whatever head!Leoben is, I don't think he intended her death to be the end--her acceptance of death was a step, not *THE* step off of a cliff. I wonder what else Kara saw/felt at the end when "they" were waiting for her... And yeah, if that was truly the end for Kara, I'll be so... okay, angry isn't a big enough word. Hmmm. Okay, words not coming. Not just anger but AAAANGRRRR. (imagine Sean Connery's Scottish accent in one of those SNL skits)

But enough of this death stuff, how hot was the paint sex? Huh? OMG. Mmm.

Weirdly enough, it was when Kara's toes were slipping in the paint that I started thinking, "whoa, this is hot." Heh. Oh Callum Keith Rennie. You can see the tattoo on his upper arm when they're on the floor.
