Writer's Block: R.E.A.D. in America Day

I've never done one of these kinds of surveys. FYI, it'll make a post in your journal if you click to submit your own answer. So the answers you can preview are actually stored on each person's journal. Huh--cool. (Yes, I did it once already, then deleted it when I realized it would show up on my LJ. I wanted to say more stuff.)

Currently reading Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. (don't judge me!) And Zorro, by Isabel Allende. And next to my bed is a stack of books, with authors such as Tony Hillerman and Jim Butcher and whoever wrote the book The Devil Wears Prada.

I've always been a reader--I was never a child who had to be coerced into reading. When I was younger I used to get in trouble for staying up too late reading. "Just one more page/paragraph/sentence!" became a sort of running joke between me and my parents.

Wish I had more time for reading now. I'm usually too busy most days to read more than the newspaper.

Importance of reading? Um... I think I'm a better-rounded person, more compassionate and more creative. Not that I have much reason (now) outside of fanfiction to put it into practice, but reading lots makes for better writing.

Recs? Anything by Dick Francis, if you enjoy a good action story. I really admire his craft and the realistic protagonists he creates. (I haven't read any of the books he's co-written with his son yet--has anyone else?) Tony Hillerman does some really interesting mystery/action stories set on Navojo tribal lands--culture and action, woohoo! I quite liked the Harry Potter series; Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game series; almost anything by Connie Willis, L.M. Montgomery, Terry Pratchett; and for nice long romance/action without excessive shmoopiness, Madeleine Brent.

I could talk about books for almost any length of time, but I'm supposed to be somewhere in a few minutes, so...
