another forgotten title

I always feel a bit self-indulgent doing those 'own fic' memes (except the end of the year one--I love that one), even though I like reading those kinds of posts by other fic writers out there. Huh. My brain is weird. So... I'm doing two in one post. *g* (The second one I compiled a while ago but didn't have the nerve to post.)

From [livejournal.com profile] dionusia and [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777:
"Sometimes it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five fic-favorites you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then admonish your readership to do the same so you can find new stories to read and pimp."

Did I mention I dislike the word 'pimp' being used as a verb for fic? I'll spare you the rest of my rant about it, though.

It was hard to chose. Like [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777, I love all of my fic babies! Honestly, I could've picked almost any five and have good reasons for calling them my favorites.

First, three fluffy ficlets that I wrote early(ish) last year, after 'Maelstrom'. They really are the most fluffy (yet hopefully realistic) BSG stories I've written. Bonus for having Helo lick Sharon's nose and call her a lollipop. (I did say fluffy, didn't I?) Plus Hotdog and Seelix are very funny together, and Dee likes gum. ;)

Cuckoo in the Nest is that short fic which shows newly-created FF baby Sam Anders being placed with a human family. I think I like it because it's science-y and creepy. (I used to teach science. I think I've been scarred for life a bit influenced by that.)

Helo again in Second Winter (on Earth); I really like my own now-AU Earth fics. They're what started this whole fic-writing thing. I had a couple of other stories in mind for that world, but the mid-season four break has made them so improbable that I doubt I'll write any more. Oh, and this is angsty with an extra serving of angst on the side. Just what I like.

Me being pretentious in four mythology ficlets! Really, really pretentious. But I love them anyway.

I was tempted to put in my most recent fic as my favorite (Racetrack!) or any of the drabbles about Maggie (wee!Racetrack! and racy!Racetrack! and somewhere out there is another ficlet with Racetrack and Gaeta dancing but I can't find it right now) because I always love the most recent fic/mostly recently written character the most...*

But since I know that about myself, instead I'll choose my perennial favorite, Nemesis. Leoben! Jean Barolay! Old Caprica survivors and a brief bit with the Resistance fighters! My reasons for liking this one include how hard it was to get done and how self-enclosed it feels--its own little world, in a way. I also like Jean's self-reliance here--it's a quality that I value, probably because I'm the granddaughter of a farmer and I grew up in the midwestern part of the US.

*In spite of not 'choosing' these as my favorites, I've still linked to them. Heh.

That first-lines meme, done by [livejournal.com profile] helen_c and others. The first line of twenty-fivetwo fanfictions--which means almost all of mine--the stuff that I've actually linked anywhere outside this livejournal. Lots of ficlets and comment-fic and so forth that I'm not using.

If you've been hanging around here much, you'll know that these stories are mostly for Battlestar Galactica.

Into the Underworld
Here's the official first line:
D'Anna Biers: Are you afraid when you go into combat?

and here's the first line that isn't a quote from an episode:
Starbuck ran the briefing with Athena at her side.

It catches you by surprise--a flash of giddiness that you're working next to Samuel T. Anders. Never Get Back Home

Once upon a time a lovely Final Five cylon with big brown eyes and a deceptively sweet smile stepped aboard a cylon basestar for the first time. Like a Bad Fairytale

Charlie Crews was a cop. Interim. (My only non-BSG fic! It's for NBC's Life.)

"Richard," she hears herself say, and he's looking at her, sorrow in his eyes. Mirage

She can see it, but it's still not there, still not right. Bound

This was familiar, thought Dee. Touched by the Sun

To know the face of God is to know madness. Want to Remember

He told her she was beautiful. Jealous Gods

Her knees and arms were starting to hurt and the wind was whipping her hair across her eyes and into her mouth. Pretty Girl

Gasping for air; it hurt to breathe. Sinistra

The frigid air was seeping through her thin blanket. Saved by Zero

He was bleeding from the shots to his stomach and shoulder. Nemesis

Falling is like flying but she can't control the direction. Falling

Once upon a time there was a handsome young prince. Fairy Tale, Ending

She had told him about it before she died, how she had killed Leoben over and over again but he always came back and told her that he loved her. Broken

Once you prayed to the gods, then you woke up as one. Four Mythology Ficlets

Helo pulled Sharon in close for a hug and kissed the top of her head. Goodnight, Kat

Wearing paisley boxers, Leoben walks past the hybrid to find his clothing supplies. Red Pants

He walks her home every school day. Second Winter (on Earth)

“I have to try to talk to Gaeta,” her husband says. Occupation, Day 79

The sixth time. She whispers the words while looking closely at him. Prophecy

Apparently here's where I'm supposed to analyze the deeper meaning of all of this. Hm.

- I don't usually identify whose POV is being used in the first line.
- Hardly any actual dialogue in the first line.
- Only one 'sentence' that wasn't actually a sentence. All the rest fit the definition.
- To me most of these sentences aren't filler--they're definitely a part of the whole story. (I spy one that I used only because of who the POV character is. And it's totally obvious who that character is from the sentence.)

It's funny to me how often the first and last sentences are some of the earliest things I write. Sometimes I'll change my mind about what to use in those places, but usually I want a beginning and end, then I fill in the middle.

FYI, almost all my fics are listed here--except for the short fics that I can't find again. (Where is that fic with Racetrack and Gaeta dancing? Hm...)

Ooh, now I want to do the one line meme! (Funny, the idea of doing the meme has made me a bit more conscious when writing beginning and ending lines lately.) But I have 40 fics and not a lot of time. How did there get to be so many? I do not know.

You don't like "pimping"? What about "promoting"? Still doesn't sound quite savory, but I think there should be no shame in self-reccing. Or in talking about what you love in your own writing.

I don't see Prophecy. How interesting. I LOVE Nemesis so hard, I can't even tell you. I know! I want to do a meme where I write down my favorite fics by all my friends! Nah, I'll just say it here. I like Falling and Want to Remember. Want to Remember is like the best ever. But so is Racetrack/Gaeta! Of course I remember where it is! It was written for me. :-) Voila! There's a Sam/Jean ficlita there too. If you won't pimp them, I sure will. :-)

Dang, now I want a Sam/Jean icon. This is your influence and I love it. Next thing you know there will be a Sam/Jean recs list (woefully short), maybe even a Sam/Jean vid from someone!

Hey, I can hope. :-)

Yeah, it made me weirdly self-aware for a couple of days after I compiled the list. But that feeling went away soon. It was interesting to look at the results.

You don't like "pimping"? What about "promoting"? Still doesn't sound quite savory, but I think there should be no shame in self-reccing. Or in talking about what you love in your own writing.

Yes, 'pimping' does sound Most Unsavory. *snickers* I like 'self-reccing' okay... and I'm not always hesitant about actually doing the self-reccing, since I included my own stories in the (old) Caprica resistance fic list. Very ambiguous, I am.

I don't see Prophecy. How interesting.
'Second Winter' was even angstier than 'Prophecy' so I picked it. But they're pretty much even in my affections.

Thanks for your list of my fics you love. *hugs* I was going to say that I was surprised not to see 'Take Two' on your list. And what about 'Deliverance'? Shmoopy fic for the win! And the 'Eye of Jupiter' infidelity kissing fic that I kept telling you to link to the fic comms that's so awesome and sexy... Also, I still love 'Building Blocks' and the Yellow drabble. Creeeeeeeepy shared projections, yay!

Aha, thanks for the link to the Racetrack/Gaeta dancing ficlet. Excellent! I'll have to add those into my fic roundup entry.

Y'know, that one Jean/Sam story by [livejournal.com profile] anythingbutgrey was so good that I've found it hard to write them as a pair ever since then. She said pretty much everything I'd want to say about them in her story. And yes, a Jean/Sam recs list would be pretty small.

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
That Sam/Jean story was the best! But you know me and combinations I like. There can never be too many fics about them.

Maybe Sam gets wounded in some way and Jean shows her concern (or disdain) in some subtle, yet irritated way . . . See, plenty of ideas. :-) Someone needs to write them!

I LOVE your new journal name. *G*

Oh, I read a very well-written rant about that, but now I can't remember where, or I'd link you. But yeah, it does sound kinda gross when you think about what it actually means, huh?

I LOVE Cuckoo In The Nest, also. I'm glad that's one of your favorites. Short, but a lot of spine-chilling goodness in a small package. My other favorites would have to be Fairy-Tale, Ending; Jealous Gods, Touched By the Sun, and ... huh, either Bound or maybe one of the What Not To Wear crossovers. (Seriously!)

(I remember a Kara/Sam ficlet you wrote with Cally and Gaeta dancing, but not Racetrack...)

Yes, it's quite awesome, isn't it?! ;-)

Yeah, on LJ that's one of my pet peeves... though I don't always notice because it's so prevalent.

WNTW crossover, yes! They still make me laugh, too.
