yes, I'm busy writing a test

Come on, internet, entertain me as I try to procrastinate!

*sigh* Okay, fine, I'll just post something.

So I was commenting to [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 about Lee and suddenly I was blathering about Leoben. Can't imagine how that happened... *innocent face* Yeah, I figured I'd better try to get some of it out of my system before I try talking about Lee again.

I don't think I'm a very "shippy" tv-watcher. I started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer in season five and quickly caught up with the DVD's. I liked Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike and even Buffy/Riley, although lots of viewers hated Riley. On Lost I really don't care who pairs up. Jack/Kate, Jack/Juliet, Kate/Sawyer, Juliet/Ben... whatever. Just entertain me (and sometimes the show does). I like the tensions generated by the different relationships but I don't feel invested in one particular pair.

I don't like it when there's only one obvious pair on a show and the writers try every possible trick to keep them apart. I vaguely recall this problem with Northern Exposure. Friends went way overboard with this and I stopped watching. And for BSG we had our pretty pretty pilots with their sibling/playmate/rivalry vibe for a season, with lovely UST and no other obvious options. So the writers threw in random obstacles. When Kara and Anders were paired up we eventually got enough information to make them a viable couple, but only later. Lee/Dee weren't supposed to be a real couple, apparently. So ciao, Dee. See you in the CIC.

side note: Speaking of Kara/Anders, how long have the PTB known they were going to make Anders a cylon? No, wait, I don't want to know. I started listening to the podcasts a few episodes late this season and finally decided to forego them completely. Not only are they spoilery on occasion but I just get so annoyed at what's done seemingly on a whim. I'll probably listen to the rest of the podcasts for season three after season four has started. Then I won't be nearly as bothered because it'll be ancient history. And I do think they're interesting enough to listen to, just not now. (Besides, I figure you guys will pass along any pertinent information I *must* know.)

Anyway... I had a point, maybe. Of all the characters in all the pairs I mentioned from various shows, the pairs I liked best (even if I didn't 'ship them) involved a creepy, powerful male with lots of charisma/magnetism. Spike was always fascinating to me, whether he was with Drusilla, pining for Buffy and replacing her with Harmony (hehehehe!), or making a house fall down around him and Buffy 'cause of the crazy sex. My sekrit tiny Ben crush (on Lost) baffles me, but he's definitely creepy and powerful. And Leoben... where to start? I talk about him way too much as it is.

My OTP: Leoben/screen time with humans. We've seen him almost exclusively with Kara. But Leoben talking to/fighting with Bill Adama was fun, him being tricksy with Laura Roslin was awesome. Imagine how he could mess with Lee Adama's brain?! Or Helo's! What about Leoben talking to Dee or *snicker* Cally? I know, Leoben's obsessed with Kara. But he could, um, get information from them about her, or accuse them of being unsupportive of her, or give them some responsibility regarding her destiny, or... Come one, just give me more Leoben.

Procrastination goal achieved, I can now go to bed feeling guilty and behind at work.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who intends to write about something else and then up pops Leoben. He really sticks with you. I'm often drawn to the creepy/mystical/enigmatic characters on tv shows, though I was very anti-Spike towards the last couple of seasons. I liked him much more in the beginning of BtVS, before the attempted rape and the crazy stalking and the soul having and whatnot.

And yeah, about Anders being a Cylon... I'm a little let down about this because a) it seems so spur of the moment and not all that planned and b) it just seems like a weird plot device to get rid of Kara/Sam so Lee/Kara can ride off to earth together. I'd be disappointed if that happened so easily like that.

And I'm mainly just a Kara shipper, meaning I'm pretty much happy with her/anyone... heh. I was like that regarding BtVS, too, though Buffy/Xander was something I never understood.

Also, I would love to see Leoben gloating over Adama for being the one to send Kara to him in the first place, and then letting her come down to New Caprica, and then disowning her/messing her up even further which lead to Maelstrom. And I don't think Helo would stand a chance against Leoben, and Athena would have to come rescue her wayward husband ("Don't talk to other Cylons, honey!") which would be hilarious.

Now I'm imagining all the potential Leoben/other character interactions... he'd play them all. And do it while talking about Kara, nonetheless.

I wasn't thrilled with some of the Spike stuff near the end of Buffy either, though I never hated him. And the soul-thing was both interesting and annoying to me. I like the determination of Spike to do whatever he needed to win Buffy, I was amused at Angel's jealousy and how it played into that final season of "Angel" but at the same time... really, two vampires with souls is a bit much. Oh well.

And I don't think Helo would stand a chance against Leoben, and Athena would have to come rescue her wayward husband ("Don't talk to other Cylons, honey!") which would be hilarious.

Helo and Leoben talking would be the funniest thing ever! *giggles with glee* Poor (sweet dumb) Helo. I love the idea that Sharon would have to rescue him.

Oh, I posted a couple more story links in the comments on [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777's Leoben fic rec list (http://daybreak777.livejournal.com/8189.html).

Yeah, I was never much of an Angel fan (the show, not necessarily the character). I found him interesting with Buffy, but when I watched the show with just him I was... underwhelmed, to say the least.

I liked Spike best when he was sowing seeds of discontent amongst the Scoobies, or basically just doing whatever it takes to take out Buffy -- School Hard and Halloween still remain some of my favorites. Of course, the end season of BtVS made it hard to like any characters (other than Buffy, for me, cause she was/is my favorite)...

Helo and Leoben talking would be the funniest thing ever!

Wouldn't it, though? Especially with how in Crossroads I, Helo's trying to be all prophetic, talking about a storm coming (Kara!), but just comes off as kind of ridiculous and pretentious, in my opinion... and little crazy. Gaeta seemed scared.

I'd love for Leoben to show Helo how it's really done -- How To Talk Like A Prophet 101. With a senior seminar on nature imagery and using it to freak out your enemies.

Maybe Sharon Agathon could be his teaching assistant. I am way more amused by this line of thinking than I should be. Leoben in front of the chalkboard, Sharon passing out the handouts... okay maybe my teaching job is popping through and that's why it's so funny to me.

Oh! Can't you just see Kara in the back of the class, legs kicked up on the seat in front of her, mocking Leoben relentlessly and throwing paper airplanes at him? Then Six would have to be the Queen Bee type, while Lee would be the overachiever and keep answering questions.

School with the BSG gang... who knew it could be so fun?

I don’t find Leoben that attractive. Interesting but not attractive. Seriously, in the mini he looks ill and the next time we see him he’s being tortured. No, it’s not him, it’s him and Kara together that’s compelling to me. His single-minded focus on her. I don’t know how he’d be with other characters. We’ve only ever seen him alone with Adama.

Ben (Henry?) too. He always looks kind of ill and again with the torture. It's just not that hot to me. Maybe it’s the mad light in their eyes.

Though Sawyer looked hot when he was tortured. How is that possible? Who can deny the hotness of that Sawyer/Kate kiss under 'duress'? Who?

Spike. Hot. It’s the cheekbones. And the accent.

Ares on Xena: Warrior Princess. The deep voice and huge chest. But yet so wrong/bad for her.

Did you ever watch a show with Gary Cole called American Gothic? Very short-lived. The Gary Cole character was very, very chilling. He makes Leoben seem like a puppy. And again, I wouldn’t say hot but there was that thing about him you seem to be describing. Uncomfortable, but compelling.

I actually like Jack the pirate with the Keira Knightley character in POTC. Must be me.

Tried to think of more but realized, I’m the opposite. I always like the canon pairing and hope for it. And I always like the hero, though usually the badboy hero too (doesn't matter if I find him attractive as long as the heroine does). Who will the heroine pick? (I secretly long to see a scene with Kara, Leoben and Lee. Where Lee realizes, well everything. Leoben would so work Lee in that scene, better than Lampkin. I don't know what Kara, new!Kara or otherwise, would do. This scene's gotta happen someday.)

I like this procrastination stuff!

Well, with Ben it's definitely more an attraction to the interesting aspects of the character rather than oooh, he's hot. 'Cause Ben isn't. When he's being devious and playing everyone around him I find him compelling but not smooch-worthy.

I'm lost with the Xena and American Gothic references, although Gary Cole definitely has an interesting presence in other roles.

I actually like Jack the pirate with the Keira Knightley character in POTC. Must be me.

Nope, actually there's a whole gang out there. Seriously. I think there's even an LJ community, and I think the term they use for the couple (ugh, I hate these one-word versions of two names) is Sparrabeth. Oh yeah, found it: [livejournal.com profile] sparrabeth. (Another person on my flist has a thing for them as well. I... don't care either way about who she might choose, although Johnny Depp is insanely watchable in those two movies.)

On a related note to that paragraph, one thing a bit disconcerting about fandom (since I'm still pretty new at this) is discovering that nothing I think is original. Heh. For example, I thought I was the only person who loved Norrington in both of those films, but nope... someone even wrote an awesome fic about him that I stumbled across once.

I'm not sure what exactly flicked the switch so that suddenly Leoben was incredibly attractive, because when I see photos of CKR, he's fairly average. Sorta-cute, but nothing exceptional. And I don't recall feeling that attraction the first time I watched the mini, although he was interesting. But now I think I'm going to have to add something with CKR to my netflix queue (once I actually sign up for netflix... been meaning to do that). Leoben is definitely smooch-worthy... but I would have the paperwork to get a restraining order if needed.

Thanks for helping with the procrastination. Tonight I'm procrastinating paying bills!

That's one thing I like about LJ and the internet in general. You're never alone in your interests. There's someone out there in the world that feels the same.

I'm not even into POTC, I was just wracking my brain trying to think of compelling anti-heroes. Realized there weren't that many that I really thought much about. Though Norrington is an interesting idea. You really do like those anti-heroes.

Bills! I really need to do that.

*off storming the checkbook*

Oh dear, it's true. What a scary realization. Maybe it's the good girl-bad (TV) boy thing? Or maybe I just feel superior liking the less-noticeable characters. I do get conventional from time to time, however. I loved Jarod with a passionate true love in "The Pretender," and Mr. Lyle just gave me the creeps. Heh.

No more procrastination tonight. I still have some bills left AND I have to grade tests. Blech.

*pokes head in*

Hi. I just read your fic, "Prophecy" and I came over to see if you had any more Kara/Leoben fic. Of course, I got sidetracked when I saw the mention of Leoben in this entry.

Spike/Buffy were my OTP on BtVS. Mostly, it was because of all of the Spike!love I had (and still have, I guess). Sexy, hilarious, dangerous, sometimes terrible, but he's still wonderful. The rape thing was something I choose to blame solely on the writers. Not on my Spikey. He got his frakking soul back for Buffy! Come on now. Also? Spike/Dru were insane and I loved them too.

Leoben-Has managed to bump Six down a notch and he is now my favorite Cylon. It might be because he's played by that sexy bitch, CKR...I'm not sure. Regardless, there's so much chemistry between Leoben/Kara. He's obsessed, but I feel like there's something else there. Screw Anders and Lee, more Kara/Leoben please! I can't tell you how frustrating it is to see this "K/L" under pairings. I always get excited because in my mind, "K/L" clearly means, "Kara/Leoben." Guess not. Anyway, I'm rambling. What I really want to know is if you have any Kara/Leoben fic recs. Heck, just Leoben fics would be wonderful as well. I just need more. There has to be more out there.

Hi! Yay, another Leoben fan!

there's so much chemistry between Leoben/Kara.

I KNOW! I like Lee, I really do. I even think Kara and Lee have a lot of chemistry, but it's like comparing a light bulb to a neon-lit Las Vegas casino. I'm always so relieved to see that even though the Kara/Lee fans are legion, there's still a small group of Kara/Leoben-fans. I really hope the BSG PTB have a plan for Leoben and how he fits into Kara's destiny because I agree--there's something else there.

What I really want to know is if you have any Kara/Leoben fic recs. Heck, just Leoben fics would be wonderful as well. I just need more. There has to be more out there.

This may be redundant since I don't know how you got to my story, but [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 just did a listing of Kara/Leoben fic recs here (http://daybreak777.livejournal.com/8189.html). I mentioned the same page in earlier comments on this same post. I like the list a lot (and not just because she put "Prophecy" on it either, heh). I put links to four more stories in my comments on that page. I really don't have anything else I could add to the list over there, 'cause there's just not enough written about Leoben. (Why?!)

If you're REALLY desperate for stuff to read I do have some fics I've posted on my LJ, two or three about Leoben, that I've never cross-posted anywhere. You can find them with the tag "bsg fic." I make NO guaranties for quality, though. Either the story didn't gel for me or it never got long enough to cross-post or it was terminally weird.

Spike/Buffy were my OTP on BtVS. Mostly, it was because of all of the Spike!love I had (and still have, I guess). Sexy, hilarious, dangerous, sometimes terrible, but he's still wonderful. The rape thing was something I choose to blame solely on the writers.

Yeah, I hated the rape storyline, so I ignored it as much as possible. It didn't seem in character to me, so not paying attention to it was fairly easy. Oh, and your mention of Spike/Dru made me realize I put Spike/Darla on my original post. Oops. Fixed it now. Spike and Dru were sooooo fun to watch. I miss them.

YOU are amazing. Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction.

I started listening to the podcasts a few episodes late this season and finally decided to forego them completely. Not only are they spoilery on occasion but I just get so annoyed at what's done seemingly on a whim . . . And I do think they're interesting enough to listen to, just not now.

Podcasts, I've been thinking about what you said above. I started a response here but it got so long and meandering that I posted it to my own journal. I just listened to the Frak Party podcast on SciFi where Ron Moore answers audience questions about the season finale. I like knowing more about the show although sometimes it’s good to wait a while.

One thing that happens for me, though. No matter what a podcast, interview, fanfic, whatever says, what I see on screen is still like ‘the truth’. Nothing can change it. I find that I’ll watch after a podcast and think, “Nope, that’s not what happened. They tried for it but I don’t see it.” It’s nice to see how they’re thinking but what’s there is sort of still there as it is. I like that. It’s like I have two shows. The show with all the extras and meta and extra knowledge that I have. And the show I watched alone in my head and where I know nothing but what the characters and scenes gave me. It’s like double the BSG!

Oh, and I'd tell you what he said but it wasn't the real podcast yet and honestly it was interesting but not real important in a way. He has his BSG, each viewer has their own. That makes it more fun for me. Everyone has their own take.
