I was thinking about books and marketing (as one does), and wondering why Scholastic chose to market The Hunger Games for a young adult audience. My default assumption is that it's because the protagonist is in that same age range. (Collins has written for children before, however. I don't know how much input she had for how these books were marketed.) The series is based around a fairly 'adult' concept.

That's about as far as my thoughts went before getting sidetracked to other recent books with interesting female protagonists. The Passage, by Justin Cronin, is sort of the Torchwood: Children of Earth of novels. They're both centered around world-changing events caused by things that we normally see in our nightmares. Also governments keeping secrets. And interesting female characters. Cronin's book has several women that I might qualify as larger than life, and T:CoE rarely pushed anyone into that role. Gwen maybe. Not enough to stretch plausibility much, considering her background.

T:CoE was meant to be more gritty and realistic, though, and The Passage is all about EPIC, and really delving into a post-apocalyptic world. One thing both media did well was draw out the full revelation of the 'monsters' over time.

I started thinking about how The Passage would be an ideal fandom for Yuletide, and sure enough, someone nominated it! Argh, I can't put in a request now. Why didn't I notice it before the sign-up period was over? I want stories about Alicia and Amy and fighting! And then I went looking to see if there were any stories already--on LJ, because AO3 is balky right now. But there's nothing. Alas.

Oooh, just got AO3 to show me the list of book fandoms and no stories there yet either. WHAT?!?

Also, it looks like the listing for The Passage has some information mixed in from a 1994 movie called Safe Passage. Can't tell right now if that's the case on the final listing, though, 'cause AO3 won't let me look at that.

Oh well. If Wikipedia is to be believed, Cronin will be writing two more novels set in the same universe as The Passage, so I may get more stories eventually. In 2012 and 2014.

Last night I didn't have any plans--it was an exhausting week and I was happy to stay at home and fiddle around on the computer or read a book. I started looking for pictures of Martha Jones for my next favorite female character post. One screencap reminded me that I'd intended to check if Netflix had Torchwood: Children of Earth available to watch. It did, including via livestreaming.

Five hours later I finally shut off my computer. *smacks forehead* It was after 1 a.m. by then. I couldn't stop watching, though. So instead of Martha Jones next, I bring you a different pick for day eight of my favorite fictional females: the women of Torchwood: Children of Earth. slightly spoilery for the mini-series (but not really) )

I've never watched Torchwood before and I don't have any plans to watch more. What I liked about this mini-series seems to be exactly what some regular TW fans hated.

If this sounds like it could be interesting and you have any experience with Doctor Who (and handwaving silly alien technology), I'd say it's worth a watch. Especially if you like smart horror movies in which the most terrifying monsters are us. And, of course, shows in which the female characters of all ages are vital, interesting and nuanced.
