So no one is out here, right? You're all watching Lost. I feel so abandoned!

If you watch 30 Rock, you need to read this fanfic: Settlingly Ever After, by dollsome. Liz Lemon/the more appropriately named Wesley Snipes. It's fantastically funny.

I haven't quite decided what the difference is between idfic and fanfic 'kinks' but I can diagnose part of what I love with very few reservations: outsiders/broken people who become friends and then realize they're in love. There's a Doctor Who/Life on Mars crossover with Martha Jones and Sam Tyler that I have reread an embarrassing number of times, because it has those features. I reread it even though it contains one of the things that usually takes me straight out of a story: having Martha blush visibly. (Um, 'cause she doesn't. Really.) And I read an Angel/Cordelia Chase AU fic that was frankly over-the-top melodramatic and loved it, because they were both so broken, and they became friends, and then more. (I'm not a huge fan of the pairing--nothing against them, but they're not a favorite couple of mine.)

This is why I started to love Kara Thrace and Sam Anders as a couple--as soon as Sam was as broken as Kara (he's a cylon and he hates himself!), I was ready for him and Kara to be friends and lovers and sort-of but not really fix each other. Support each other as they fixed themselves.

Hm. My own story "Settlement" has some of these elements, though not necessarily in the right order. And it's one of my all-time favorites of stories I've written.

*nods* Yeah, this is one of mine too. A *big* one of mine. I know what you mean about finding those stories that hit those really specific tropes that work, and then reading them over and over.
