lots of links and stuff

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] emmiere, I've now downloaded all of Janelle MonĂ e's newest album from amazon.com. Youtube vids with her that are thoroughly enjoyable: Tightrope and Many Moons. For the record, album The ArchAndroid isn't just dance music. There are some lush orchestral numbers and a hip-hop song and more. I like most of it, and I definitely love her voice.

Battlestar Galactica related: [livejournal.com profile] lyssie's thoughts about Kara and Sam and abusive spouses.

The Chronicles of Narnia--new "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" movie trailer. Needs more Eustace. I'm not even sure what he looks like from this. Nonetheless I'm excited! (I hope I'm more satisfied with this one than I was with the second movie, which I enjoyed but definitely didn't love.)

Speaking of upcoming movies, I've agreed to go to the midnight showing of Eclipse. Because what every Twilight movie opening night needs is more sarcastic older-than-target-audience women to giggle throughout the film. Perhaps I should buy popcorn to throw at the people who glare at me.
(I'm kidding! I'll try and keep the giggling quiet. And I wouldn't throw popcorn at people. Unless they threw it at me first.)

Fandom-related, here's the unfunnybusiness write-up of that RPF SPN fanfic. Just for the record, I'm not interested in RPF and I don't watch Supernatural, but what happened with that particular fanfic isn't limited to that fandom or that author. I'm joining the chorus and saying please let me know if I post something offensive.

On a completely unrelated note (which fits the tone of this post so far, yes?), I've been looking for sandals. Specifically, I want flat sandals with a reasonably cushiony sole, nothing between the toes and not backless. This is a bit specific, yes, but not that hard. It's sandal season right now. I've been to every single store in my town that sells shoes (except Payless), plus the DSW in a nearby town and there's nothing that fits right. Most stores don't even have sandals that fit my description except for gladiator sandals, and those are definitely not for me. One department store had two styles I wanted to try, but no pairs available in my size. WOE!

Um. Unfortunately all this shoe-shopping has not only resulted in no black sandals, I've also spent $80 on other shoes. I've bought four pairs of new, name-brand shoes for that $80 (yay, sales and coupons!), but still. No flat black sandals! And I have to wait until school starts again to wear most of the new shoes I did buy, because they're really for work. I hate waiting!

Yeah, my life is so difficult. Hah!

Can you not order the sandals in your size? Maybe try online? Don't miss the sandal window!

I can't imagine you would but I guess one never knows. You keep me on the straight and narrow fic-wise, you know that right? But yeah, we have to help each other out. There is always room for growth and to learn.

I have a mental block against ordering shoes online! It's weird! Though part of it is practical--if they don't work, I have to go wait in line at the post office to ship them back, even if return shipments are free. But I just prefer trying them on, walking around and around, posing my foot in front of the funny little stool mirrors, etc.

I did find a pair today at the outlet mall the next town over. They were on sale, too, and so far they feel fine on my feet. (I'm only wearing them at home first, just in case I need to return them.) Unfortunately the outlet mall is problematic for me: I also bought two necklaces, a bracelet, three shirts, a sweater and a dress. Um... ooops? This is why I did't want to go there! (The dress is so cute! And I do have the budget for this, but it wasn't my intention, y'know?)

eta: I can't imagine you would but I guess one never knows.
Oh! I forgot my nugget of 'wisdom' from three and a half years online with LJ: anyone can mess up. (Yeah, that's gold there, DB. GOLD! Hee!)

Yay, sandals! Now you need a pedicure to really feel summery. Even if you just had one. :-) Pedicures make toes so pretty!

I want to see this cute dress! If you have the money, why pass up cuteness?

anyone can mess up
This is true. But this was one really bad mess up and hurtful and insensitive. Anyone can but it's good to have people around you who help you out with fics so that maybe this doesn't happen. :-/

It still worries me that this particular fic writer had beta-readers and an artist, and yet she was still blindsided by the people upset over it. So no one said anything, apparently, before she posted. (Though yes, I think that the people I've used as beta-readers, you included, would recognize this particular kind of really bad mess up.)

I still keep boggling over the details from that particular mess-up. It makes me sad that it was ever written.

Maybe they didn't even notice which is very, very disturbing. It was a Big Bang. That's a lot of story not to say something.

This particular mistake makes me mad rather than sad. It's the kind of story (I looked at some quotes) that could have been written sixty years ago. A hundred years ago. But no. It was written now. Sigh.

Thank you for this its wonderful to have someone take this issue seriously and it is serious since this story represents a problem in our society at large not just a case of bad writing.(Although there was some of that as well) This type of thing is so pervasive and even accepted (its actually very prevalent in media) its really is important to point it out. I just wish the point coming across to the writer was that this sort of Noble Savage stereotyping is damaging and helps perpetuate the idea that whites are superior, although I suspect that's being lost in the uproar.

It's hard to be really specific about how the Noble Savage is problematic when there were so many other problematic things in that particular story. But yes--the Noble Savage trope is way too prevalent in movies, books, etc. Not surprising that it gets subconsciously repeated by some fanfic writers. Unfortunately I don't see that changing quickly. (Maybe slowly, though...)
