Been on a bit of a music kick lately - and not just Nicholas Britell's Andor soundtrack, although definitely that.

I was unaware of Norwegian singer-songwriter AURORA, even though she's been around for a few years. But this duet with French singer Pomme is fantastic.

Music! the best singer in the world )

So had you heard (of) him before? If you've posted about him in the past, let me know! I'll go back and read it.

(Also, I'm pretty sure this counts as a fandom--of sorts. I'll admit to watching FAR TOO MANY of the "vocal coach reacts to" videos for his songs.)

The Magicians created a compelling in-universe reason for everyone to sing Queen/David Bowie's "Under Pressure" in order to save the day. At least temporarily.
(Video includes some swearing, so maybe don't play it loudly at work.)

(This all makes sense within the episode, but it's still enjoyable for the voices and the acting, even without context.)

Anyway. I'm still in season three, and I've gotten so attached to Fen lately. Too bad she's not part of Team Quest; instead, she had to look confused as Julia suddenly burst into song. I may have to dig around AO3 to see if there's any fanfic focused on her. There are lots of cool writing opportunities for a character like her: she was born and raised in Fillory, so you could world-build as well as explore characterization.

(I'm likely to be disappointed in this fic quest. I never did find any fic focused on Julia and her trauma/recovery after season one. Oh, fandom. So predictable in its focus on Quentin, Eliot, Quentin, Eliot, Quentin, Eliot... even before season four, they have the most stories. Which is fine! Everyone gets to focus on their own thing. But dang, sometimes it's just so tiresome seeing the same patterns repeat in every fandom.)

I didn't actually watch the movies back-to-back. In fact, it took two sittings per movie for me to finish them. Anyway, here are a few thoughts on two Netflix original films, both adapted from books:

To All the Boys I've Loved Before - I tried the book and couldn't finish it. A movie is much better for this story, which is a straightforward rom-com with misunderstandings, pretending to be dating, a mean ex-girlfriend... I enjoyed it, but this was in large part thanks to the lovely chemistry between the leading woman and her soon-to-be-actual boyfriend. Also, the family life moments were very endearing.

This movie's biggest plus: definitely the two leads. Strong actors, very charming together.

Dumplin', like TAtBILB, has a contemporary setting, but the feel of it is older. Teenagers who actually call each other on their cell phones instead of texting? A small town beauty pageant? Dolly Parton as inspiration for the leading woman? This isn't necessarily a flaw, just an observation. Dumplin' doesn't really go for the drama of how the girl will win over the boy. Instead, the boy is super interested in the girl, but the girl has to go on her own journey before she's willing to consider taking that leap of faith into a relationship.

That's probably why I'd rewatch Dumplin' over the other film, by the way: a satisfying emotional journey for a fat teenage girl, who fights with and makes up with her best friend, and who acquires two more friends, and who learns to appreciate her hard-working mother even if she doesn't end up wanting the same kind of things? Yeah, nice. The boy was secondary to the rest, which was refreshing.

(The 'boy' in Dumplin' does NOT pass for a high school student, even though that's what he's supposed to be. Not a fatal flaw, just an annoyance. In the HUGE PLUS column: Dolly Parton actually wrote new songs for this movie, and reworked some older ones! I love her.)

So there ya go. Have fun watching some rom-coms!

I've been blogging and reblogging some Christmas music favorites on Tumblr, because that's an easy thing to do.

Looking around for some of my old favorites led to this version of Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, written for three-part treble (boy soprano) choir and harp. This is done as written--a boys' choir rather than adults. They're incredibly talented.

Why are these reasonably well known singers taking breaths in the middle of phrases? In the WRONG places? I don't claim to know a ton about music, but even I know something about this. Even without much training, it's just common sense to keep an idea whole, without pauses, especially when it's not a long phrase and there's a logical 'break' coming up. WHYYYYYYY?

Pandora.com has an interesting selection of music, and I've purchased songs by artists I've found there, but these country/Christian singers on my Christmas station should know better, right?

In an odd turn of events, I'm directing my congregation's choir for our Christmas program this year. (Choir is composed of anyone who will come to church forty-five minutes early for practice.)

Anyway, I selected two songs during the Thanksgiving holidays. One is an arrangement of the Polish Carol that some of you may know as Infant Holy, Infant Lowly. Or Stars Were Gleaming. It's a lovely melody, and the parts work well in this arrangement. It includes a short flute solo and a verse for children to sing.

It took me longer to decide on the second song. Finally I went with As Shepherds Kept Their Lonely Vigil, thinking that it just seemed like the best choice.

Since I was choosing the songs on Thanksgiving morning, my dad overhead all of this from my laptop, and later dug up a CD with a song that sounded remarkably like that second song. The melody to Oro'sé Do Bheathea Bhaile, an old Irish tune, has a lot of similarities to "As Shepherds Kept..." So maybe my feeling of 'just right' came from familiarity. Heh.

Anyway, the link up there for "As Shepherds Kept Their Lonely Vigil" includes a free download PDF for the sheet music as well as a link to listen to a version sung by someone named Heather Prusse, who does have a nice voice. Enjoy your free Christmas music!

Post-season one fic is currently a go (in spite of my abject terror at the idea of SO MUCH PLOT); I'm now collecting music for a writing soundtrack.

So far I have several songs the show has used (by Unkle, Massive Attack and others), but it turns out that there are a few bits of Person of Interest's soundtrack that I do like. Undecided about The Machine's theme but I quite like Root's theme. (The finale version of Root's theme has some interesting changes in it.)

Moving on to the final episode of season one! Person of Interest 1X23 )

Work is WEIRD this week. Tomorrow and Friday I may end up with a lot of time babysitting a tiny group of students who aren't enrolled in my classes. Possibly. In other words, perhaps fic-writing time. I asked for prompts a few weeks ago for just this sort of thing. Feel free to head back there and throw something else at me, if you're so inclined. (No Battlestar Galactica prompts this time. Poor comatose BSG muse. *sigh*)

Post title related to this: why didn't I know about Mika's fantastic voice and song-writing abilities before today? Oh yeah, because I rarely listen to anything but the news on the radio. And because Pandora doesn't think he sings enough like Janelle Monae and Adele, I guess. Anyway, Grace Kelly is a brilliant song. In addition to having ridiculous amounts of song-writing talent and a three and a half octave singing range, Mika is also a polyglot.

Time to make a new Pandora radio station! Or perhaps simply time to listen to another station besides "Bear McCreary." Heh. (BSG muse may be dead, but McCreary is still a brilliant composer.)

Happy Easter to all who celebrate it. We're singing arrangements of God So Loved the World and Consider the Lilies of the Field. Our choir director has a tendency to choose slightly challenging versions, which is both fun and nerve-wracking at times. (I was never so adventurous when I was in charge of music selection.)

Poking about on youtube led to this orchestra and choir from Spain doing a lovely job with excerpts from Handel's Messiah. 24, 25 and 26: Surely, And with His Stripes, All We Like Sheep. The pianissimo singing at the end of 26 is particularly effective.

Have some music! This is Ben l'Oncle Soul's cover of The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army," and it is awesome. (Embedding disabled, so you'll have to follow the link.)

Okay, Person of Interest viewers: question about 1.17 )

And finally a Person of Interest fic rec: if you've been reading blacktop50's other stories with Reese having a place to stay above an Indian restaurant, you'll probably like the most recent addition: An Early Spring, part one and part two. Carter's POV, and definitely Carter/Reese this time instead of gen. PG-13, under 4000 words.

Hi new people! *waves* I hate to break it to you, but sometimes I talk about things other than Person of Interest. I KNOW, hard to believe if you've only looked at recent-ish entries. New fandom obsession will eventually fade. At that point I'll probably go back to posting two or three times a week, with my usual topics of books, time travelers, and attractive humanoid robots that have feeeeeeelings. The emotional robots bit is probably why I like John Reese so much, to be honest.

(Any day is LJ defriending amnesty day; I don't have it set up to receive notification if someone takes me off their reading list. I also don't have the 'my guests' feature activated, so if you've been lurking without commenting, you can continue to be anonymous.)

Today in church we sang "All Creatures of Our God and King" and I was v. pleased because the arrangement has an awesome alto part. Actually, it's quite a nice arrangement for all the voices. And that reminded me that I've been meaning to do a piano update. *sigh*

A confession: I'm much more excited about the Hunger Games movie trailer than the trailer for The Hobbit.

Hanukkah started last night. Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate it.

A Hanukkah fic rec: An Act of Rebellion: Eight Nights of Hope. Harry Potter fandom. Some Ravenclaws deciding to bring light into Hogwarts at a very dark time. PG, less than 1000 words.

And Christmas fic--also Harry Potter fandom:
In a year we all will be together; the first Christmas after the war. PG, 1600 words.

Thy Leaves Are So Unchanging is a Weasley Christmas, post-DH. Rated G.

Why yes, I have been reading a few stories at the HP Holiday Gen fest. (Now that I have a complete draft of my Yuletide story I can go read more!)

Christmas music!
Carol of the Bells (for twelve cellos) is so amazing.

Noël Nouvelet--a beautiful a cappella version by Anuna.

Allison Krauss and Yo-Yo Ma, the Wexford Carol. Gives me chills.

Not actually a Christmas song, but I'm linking because it's fun: Identical Snowflakes a fanvid with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Lastly, Connie Willis wrote a Christmas story with aliens! All Seated on the Ground. I haven't read it yet, but Willis's shorter stories have always been excellent. Mostly I'm linking so I'll remember to go read this myself.

Go vote in my poll/post about episodes 2.18 and 2.19 of The Sarah Connor Chronicles! After that you should comment there and say pithy things!

Then go watch this fanvid for Up.

And after that, watch this fanvid for the Ponds (Rory!) of Doctor Who.

Then you should listen to the new album of Muppet songs sung by popular artists!

And finally, go look at the pictures taken in one boy's room while he was gone to summer camp. (The sentence "Stay out of my room!" doesn't mean a lot to his family... hee!)

Now give me money!

(Wait. Why didn't that last order work?)

I am sitting here feeling generally pleased with life. I think it's a temporary high induced by "Yay, tomorrow is Friday" plus knowing that I get to go fabric-shopping this weekend! Wooohoooo!

Yes, this has to be rationed out. Much like the urge to buy all the clothing ever (especially at the thrift store). But I'm allowed to shop when I have a plan and there are sales.

What plan, I hear you ask? (Okay, not really. But I'm going to tell you anyway.) Look at this blouse. I have been admiring brocade and sari fabrics for years, but I've never had a feasible plan for a garment that I would actually wear. I'd wear a version of this blouse, and I already have that pattern.

Also, I want to make a black skirt, and I need some lace tape to finish the red skirt that's almost done. (Again.)

As for non-sewing stuff:

1) what would happen if Three (D'Anna Biers) met Ten (the Tenth Doctor)? I am wildly curious about your opinion.

2) I love love love "Bright Morning Stars," the new album by the Wailin' Jennys. Three-part harmony by amazingly capable female vocalists!

3) Time to rewatch episode 1.04 of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. My turn to (co-)write a recap this weekend.

It's time for a post constructed of mostly unrelated topics!

1) I can't decide what to do about Spring Break this year, and I need to decide soon. Go visit my brother in Washington D.C. or stay here or do something else? (Ack, my passport expired?! Okay, D.C. is still doable, but not most of the Caribbean.)

2) Shakira's music sounds better in her native Spanish. I like Celine Dion's voice when she's singing in her native French, but not much when she sings in English. Anyone else do that?

3) I watched the first two episodes of Fairly Legal, that new USA network show with Sarah Shahi and Michael Trucco. only spoilery for the premise and my opinion so far )

4. More TV. Parks and Recreation may turn me into a rabid shipper. rabid-ish... )

5. I've been rewatching The Plan this week while grading papers in a frenzy. I liked my own version of the (old) Caprica resistance better than what I've been watching on the DVD. [insert crankyface here] This makes it harder to write Sam and Jean fighting cylons. *sigh*

And so it begins... I made a post to start the rewatch plans. We'll talk about the pilot episode next week, probably Friday! If you have an episode you would love to recap for us, use the link to make your claim in the comments there.

In completely unrelated news, via friendsfriends list I've learned that The Wailin' Jennys have a new album coming out next week and you can listen here! Yay, so exciting! (I think just the first three tracks are from the new album. But while you're there you should listen to "Arlington" and then make me a fanvid about Caprica, Gina, and Natalie to that song.)

I'm close to a thousand words on my Yuletide fic. I'm guessing it will be... twice that long? Hard to tell.

So that's good. Of course, I haven't practiced the piano since Tuesday, and I'm playing my two Christmas songs at our "piano party" in a week. Oops.

Also, I haven't posted about any favorite female characters in a week. Oops again.

Clearly it's time to rectify that slip-up. Meet a fabulous felt female back here! )

Thanks to anonymous for the extra paid time on dreamwidth. I'm trying to catch up on loading my userpics there.

It is all lls_mutant's fault that the very little computer time I had yesterday was spent reading a Battlestar Galactica/Dollhouse crossover. I didn't even watch Dollhouse (other than one episode) when it was on air, but that story forced me to sit down and read it from beginning to end. You really don't need to know much beyond the basic premise for the story to make sense.

Anyway. Change of topic now. Tonight is my church's annual Christmas Devotional--a broadcast at which the leaders speak about, well, Christmas obviously. And the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sings. So it's awesome. You can watch online or on BYU TV (which is carried by Dish Network, by the way). 8 p.m. Eastern time in the US. It'll probably be available anytime online after the live broadcast is done.

I'll be back later with another post about favorite female characters. In the meantime, have some pictures of my current cat. I don't believe I've introduced her to you. So: her name is Spice. It's the name she came with, and since she was seven when I adopted her, I figured she got to keep it. (Oh my goodness, I've had her for over eighteen months? Wow.)
