rose_griffes: Olivia Dunham from Fringe: in the tank (fringe2)

Person of Interest gets a new episode this week. Finally. In the meantime, here's an article about what Jim Caviezel does for fitness. What really struck me wasn't the exercise and health routine, it was that he views an eight-hour day as being a half-day of work... because a full day can run fifteen to nineteen hours on set. Aie. Can't imagine that.

I'm still watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. Episode 3.08 featured Hama, an awesome creepy old lady who reminds me of Tom Zarek. Though that might be [livejournal.com profile] lls_mutant's fault, since she compared another AtLA character to Tom Zarek, so the thought was already lurking. At any rate, that was a fantastic episode, and I'd love to see more of Hama and/or more about bloodbending, but I have a sneaking suspicion I'm supposed to view it as automatically off-limits, and I sort of... don't. Sorry, show. Which might be my own inner Tom Zarek coming out, with the 'any means to an end' idea drifting around.

Also still watching The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, and it's lots of fun. And I'm trying to catch up on Fringe's last episodes. I have four more before it's done forever.

Two (more) quick vid links and I'm declaring this to be an official post. First, Festivids is still anonymous for... I don't know how much longer. I really liked this vid for Grapes of Wrath. It's centered around Ma Joad. (I've watched a few others, liked them well enough to comment, and entirely forgot to bookmark them.)

Finally, French Toast is an animated short film that I stumbled across a few days ago. It was nominated for an Oscar in 2010. Six minutes of action, and it includes a problem, a mystery, shooting, and, well, stuff. A nice and quick diversion of a film.

Back to work stuff now. *disappears*

I wanted to post my thoughts about the season finale of Person of Interest but LJ wasn't letting me upload pictures. So for now, have a PoI fanvid that I found thanks to Tumblr. I haven't located any LJ entries about it, so... y'all should comment for me if you have a youtube account. :)

Direct link. Huh, been a while since I recced a fanvid. Shiny new fandom hasn't had many that have really clicked for me. Funny that the one I like best so far is really more about the Machine than any of the people on the show.

A confession: I'm much more excited about the Hunger Games movie trailer than the trailer for The Hobbit.

Hanukkah started last night. Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate it.

A Hanukkah fic rec: An Act of Rebellion: Eight Nights of Hope. Harry Potter fandom. Some Ravenclaws deciding to bring light into Hogwarts at a very dark time. PG, less than 1000 words.

And Christmas fic--also Harry Potter fandom:
In a year we all will be together; the first Christmas after the war. PG, 1600 words.

Thy Leaves Are So Unchanging is a Weasley Christmas, post-DH. Rated G.

Why yes, I have been reading a few stories at the HP Holiday Gen fest. (Now that I have a complete draft of my Yuletide story I can go read more!)

Christmas music!
Carol of the Bells (for twelve cellos) is so amazing.

Noël Nouvelet--a beautiful a cappella version by Anuna.

Allison Krauss and Yo-Yo Ma, the Wexford Carol. Gives me chills.

Not actually a Christmas song, but I'm linking because it's fun: Identical Snowflakes a fanvid with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Lastly, Connie Willis wrote a Christmas story with aliens! All Seated on the Ground. I haven't read it yet, but Willis's shorter stories have always been excellent. Mostly I'm linking so I'll remember to go read this myself.

It feels like suddenly everybody on my reading list has posted wish lists.

Baaa-baaaaa-baah. my hastily created wish list )

Go vote in my poll/post about episodes 2.18 and 2.19 of The Sarah Connor Chronicles! After that you should comment there and say pithy things!

Then go watch this fanvid for Up.

And after that, watch this fanvid for the Ponds (Rory!) of Doctor Who.

Then you should listen to the new album of Muppet songs sung by popular artists!

And finally, go look at the pictures taken in one boy's room while he was gone to summer camp. (The sentence "Stay out of my room!" doesn't mean a lot to his family... hee!)

Now give me money!

(Wait. Why didn't that last order work?)

Trying to clean out some bookmarks, so here are lots of Doctor Who links.

Doctor Who stuff, both fanvids and fanfic (spoilers for series five) )

More of my Doctor Who favorites are bookmarked here

Okay, taking a break from LJ isn't working so well. I blame Doctor Who. I still haven't watched any fanvids posted by you from the first ten or whatever days of July (or read fic from then, or much else), but I'm hunting non-spoilery (to me) DW vids anyway.

Allons-y! then.

Can You See the Lights, by [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice. Focus on the Weeping Angels episodes. Bonus: the song used is by Butterfly Boucher. Also, it includes River Song. Heh.

I, also by [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice. Focus on "Amy's Choice." Excellent song choice (Andrew Bird!) to highlight some of the more disturbing aspects of that episode.

half-life by [livejournal.com profile] big_n_happy. Spoilers for all series five episodes through "Amy's Choice." Must be a hell of a scary crack in your wall. *shivers*

DW series five, spoilers through 'Vincent and the Doctor,' rambly other stuff )

Possibly I should avoid watching the remaining episodes of Doctor Who until August. The last episode won't be available through Amazon until... July 25? I think. Hm.
Really, LJ, stop luring me back in! July is vacation month!

On a totally unrelated note (other than general fannishness), look at this crotcheted Reepicheep! It is just awesome!

Dear bad day: you are fired. I shall drown you out with the sound of favorite songs. yay, musicals and other youtube vids! )

Hah, that's, um, we'll just say an eclectic mix. Got any favorite silly YouTube vids?

[livejournal.com profile] di_br has posted the most amazing fanvid for the Tenth Doctor that you should go watch now. Yes, right now!

(Profanity warning for one of the songs used. Also, there are images for all of Ten's, um, tenure, including the post-season four specials. I was already spoiled rotten for them, so it didn't make a difference to me, but some of you might want to stay away for that reason.)

Real-life stuff: the trials and travails of making banana bread )

I feel like I should post something meaningful, but instead I'm going to post this: a Derek/Jesse (Sarah Connor Chronicles) fanvid to Simon and Garfunkel's song "America" is a brilliant idea, yes or no? why I say YES! )

No, I'm not going to learn how to vid. I'll just sit here and imagine it and psychically try and persuade someone to make it.

Here's a fantastic Boomer vid on youtube that was recced at [livejournal.com profile] bsgvidrecs. I don't know if I'd ever watch fanvids without that particular LJ comm.
eta: [livejournal.com profile] frolicndetour knew an LJ link for the vid. Hurrah! Download & comment here.

Well, okay, I would. Because I found this one without it: Wicked Game, by [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24. Character study of Anastasia Dualla.

So apparently it's "rec ouchy vids about secondary female characters" day in my LJ. I feel like I should now have more! Except... I don't at the moment. (Real-life stuff is keeping me very busy. That may ease up before the end of March. I sure hope so, at any rate.)

Y'know, a whole lot of the music I've downloaded from emusic.com has been from fanvid music discoveries.

This was inspired by [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777's post about fanvids made using the same song. It only connects loosely to that topic, however.

I'm not sure if this counts as writing analysis, fanvid analysis, TV episode analysis or none of those things, but I have thoughts about a couple of vids (and how they connect to what I wrote).

spoilers for 'Doctor Who' 3.08 and 3.09 )

I need to delete some links from my bookmarks, so here's a fanvid link party: some fanvids I've liked lately )

eta: Sad news: Dick Francis passed away. I really enjoyed his books.

Three-day weekend! Woohooo! Also, I finished a first draft of the Settlement-era fic. Writing cylon POV is hard, y'all.

Going to the movies later--either Where the Wild Things Are (it's still at the dollar theater) or The Princess and the Frog. Just depends on what time this other real-life thing is over.

Oh! I'm going to need distraction while doing the tedious revising part of Settlement-era fic, so if you want to request a ficlet, go for it. Fandoms I'll try writing:
Doctor Who
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Life
Battlestar Galactica

crossovers of any of the previous four shows with Pushing Daisies, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Pretender and Lost

eta: link from [livejournal.com profile] izhilzha--go watch this Doctor Who fanvid. It's Doctor Who, old and new, to a Muppets song! ♥ ♥ ♥

Okay, after I post this I'm turning off the computer. Honest!

So: I'm glad to be done with another round of grading. This brings me joy, yes. Imagine me beaming, my fingers stained with red ink.

One of my classes has discovered my Kryptonite--a horrible tendency to get pop songs that I swear I don't even listen to stuck in my head. This means that they evilly reference those songs on purpose. *laughs* Kudos to them for being clever about.

I mentioned this because [livejournal.com profile] chaila43 made a fantastic fanvid for Sarah Connor using Lady Gaga's "Pokerface." *cackles maniacally* (Go ahead, try not to think about that song now!)

So how do you wake up Lady Gaga?
You poke her face.

Yes, I'm twelve.

I go through music binges. Most recent favorite: Butterfly Boucher. Best known for "A Bitter Song"--apparently they played it on Grey's Anatomy once, but I know the song from [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl's fabulous BSG Final Four fanvid. But Boucher can also do a fantastic rock sound, which she does with two other musicians in the sorta-kinda-a-joke band Elle Macho.

You guys! The world's most awesome fan-made video is here! It's a tribute to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, with dance clips from all of their movies. It is simply adorafabulowonderful! (Embedded livestreaming at the link; the downloaded version does have better quality, though.) Hm. Now I know what to ask for Christmas--some of those old Astaire/Rogers movies on DVD would be great.

The fic exchange at [livejournal.com profile] karathracelives has produced some awesome stories! I think I've commented on all of them so far; go and read! (I didn't participate. Werewolves and hybrid babies and ghosts were distracting me. Someday I'll be distracted by them again, and actually finish one of those stories. No time lately. *sadface* No time for reading much on LJ, either; thankfully the Kara gen stories have mostly been fairly short, so I could justify reading them.)

I 'played' soccer tonight. I'm really, really bad at it. It was fun. *g*

This whole thing about weird Utah/Mormon names keeps popping up. Five (LDS) sisters who grew up on a dairy farm in Utah are on that America's Got Talent show. I haven't been watching it, but here's a link to one of their performances on youtube. It's pretty cool. (Their dance starts at about the two minute mark.) Their first names are LaChere, Shaundalee, Ayrion, Cambria and Veva. (Cambria makes me think of the Cambrian (geological) period. If there had been another girl the parents could have named her Paleozoa.)

More links!

* interesting Buffy fanvid.

* I meant to link to this picspam ages ago: Aeryn Sun = Spock + Han Solo + Boobs.

* Callum Keith Rennie being a big nerd in an interview

eta: part one of "Kara Thrace and the Seven Cylons" (fractured fairytale for Battlestar Galactica)

That's all for tonight.

I've been seeing recs for Vividcon fanvids all over my reading list. I'm so smart for having added such smart people to my reading list! *g*

Marble House is a Doctor Who vid that focuses on the two parter 'Human Nature/Family of Blood.' It is chilling, as a vid with that focus ought to be.

Another Country focuses on Hurley (from Lost). It's an amazing view of a character who is often overlooked. Made me a bit teary-eyed.

To lighten the mood a bit, Swing! The original Star Trek has rhythm, yeah.

I've seen several recs for vids from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Since the show has finally moved to the top of my netflix queue, I'm going to hold off watching them until I've seen some episodes. (I do think that [livejournal.com profile] charmax's awesome BSG/T:TSCC vid is simply fantastic even without having seen the show.)

I have other things I want to write about, but if I don't mention these now, I may not post about them ever. So go forth and enjoy!
My job! It does this whole 'taking away my free time' thing! HOW DARE IT?!

Finishing out season three of Doctor Who: Okay, fine, I'll put this under a cut. Just in case. But it's not very spoilery and it's shorter than the text of this cut, I think. )

This fanvid is an utterly brilliant, hilarious look at the Master. You don't have to know the show at all to enjoy it. Plus it uses music by Flight of the Conchords! Win!

Fic recs for the Year that Wasn't, PLEASE!
