rose_griffes: Eleventh Doctor and his TARDIS (eleven)

I've seen all three Disney+ Doctor Who episodes. Not much sticking in my brain after them--as in, I've forgotten details and I don't have time to refresh my memory before typing this--but the villain in the 3rd episode was a delight. As was Ncuti Gadwa as the new doctor. I'm not cutting for that as a spoiler, given that the news has been out for... a year, maybe? At any rate: if episodes continue to show up on Disney+ when I'm still subscribing to that platform, I'll probably watch. But Doctor Who is unlikely to be the show that motivates me to keep / resubscribe to Disney+.

Housemate A and I watched the 80s movie Ladyhawke. I'd forgotten that Matthew Broderick was in it, which is hilarious, given his key role in the film. Still a delight, if extremely dated due to its soundtrack.

I reread almost all of Lois McMaster Bujold's World of the Five Gods series. Ista, my beloved! Penric, my darling! And, er, those other two novels that aren't about Ista or Penric, which I therefore didn't re-read. At any rate: WHAT A TREAT. AGAIN. In fact, I'm listening to the audiobook of Paladin of Souls, even though I just re-read it. (Thinking about it: reading a text and then listening to it may be the way to get me to enjoy audiobooks. Hm.)

And now it's time to work again. Bah, humbug.

I wasn't going to watch the new Doctor Who special, but then I got spoiled for a returning character and my interest was piqued. And apparently the thing I would hope for in regards to this character does, in fact, happen in some way. Also, this is on Disney+ and I'm subscribed to that platform for the moment, which makes the whole thing feasible in a timely* fashion.
*unintentional, but amusing

However: I haven't watched Doctor Who since midway through Eleven's time. And having checked the "previously on" section of this episode, it seems like it might be a good idea to watch the Christmas special from last year in order to get needed context. But maybe I shouldn't bother at all, not even with the new episode? IDK!

Should I watch the 2022 Doctor Who Christmas special before I watch the new DW special?

I ended up reading another book by Chris Bohjalian: Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands. It's his most recent novel, the one that first piqued my interest when I heard an interview with him talking about it. v. mild spoilers, trigger warnings, and my reaction )

So there was a new episode of Doctor Who last night. I still haven't finished watching season seven. Somewhere along the way I lost interest, and I can point to Clara as the new companion as that moment: yet another woman with a mystery. How many mysterious women whose pasts are secretly entwined with the Doctor do we need? As someone who identified pretty strongly with the (ordinary human) companions, it left me feeling like an outsider.

I may watch the rest of season seven now that it's on Netflix... or I may not. I tried episode 7.06 the other day, and it wasn't an auspicious re-entry point.

Feel free to tell me why I should give season eight a try in real-time, if you wish.

[livejournal.com profile] sabaceanbabe recently made this post with a list of what she viewed as her best works in fic-writing. It was interesting, the trends I spotted in her favorite stories that match trends in mine as well, such as lots of minor characters getting major roles in fic. That and not usually writing fandom's preferred pairing, whatever pair that may be. I was already inclined in that direction, but S'babe's stories were an influence in those earliest months.

So since I started off following her, I decided to make a similar post with stories I've written. some of my favorite fanfics back here )

Seven years of fic-writing summed up there. I still wish I wrote faster; stories that are started and done within two days are emphatically the exception.

At some point one of you linked to the Lizzie Bennet diaries, and suddenly I've watched thirty-five episodes?! *shakes fist* Okay, granted, one episode is between two to four minutes in length, but still. (Short explanation: modern adaptation of Austen's classic Pride and Prejudice, featuring a video blogger by the name of... well, you can figure that one out. They're utter fluff. For me what's most fun is seeing how they're adapting the basic idea to fit a contemporary setting. Okay, and Bing Lee is really adorable, alright? And I may have already watched eight episodes of Lydia's v-log as well. Oops.)

[personal profile] chaila's posts about Smoke Signals made me nostalgic. The movie is back in my Netflix queue, because it's now available with livestreaming, woohoo! And if you don't know why you should watch--or you need to be reminded of why--here's a fun little fanvid from the source material. (I have the phrase "Hey, Victor!" stuck in my head again.)
eta: I should mention that the vid--and therefore the movie--contains brief moments of physical abuse toward children./eta

[personal profile] chaila also linked to Sherman Alexie's short story, This Is What It Means To Say Phoenix, Arizona, the short story that is the (very minimalist) base for Smoke Signals. The movie, with ninety minutes screentime, covers a lot more than the short story, but it's interesting to compare the two.

Okay, apparently this is the [personal profile] chaila post, because here's some meta on Skyler White from Breaking Bad, and I think she would find it a good read. (I read through the first part, and I don't actually watch that show. What I find compelling is the common theme among so many fans to vilify her and, uh, deify Walter White. For lack of a better term. Obviously the whole "fans hate female characters for the same reasons that they love male characters" is something that draws my attention, though.)

Finally, a fic rec. Doctor Who lends itself well to crossovers with anything. The Lone Centurion has Rory waiting his two thousand years, and meeting up with Methos from Highlander from time to time. To my recollection I've never watched a single episode of Highlander, but I knew enough to enjoy the story anyway. Immortality and mythology are irresistible draws.

Sort of catching up on TV. Ish.

Doctor Who 7.02-7.05 )

Elementary, pilot episode )

Person of Interest 2.01 )

I'll have to catch up on Fringe and Parks and Recreation soon. With Fringe I'm continuing what I did the latter half of season four: wait eight days until the episode is available online legally for free. Unless there's a dramatic jump upward in quality, I'm okay with waiting.

I've pre-ordered the blu-ray discs of Person of Interest. This means I need to buy a blu-ray player now. Heh. The series is available Sept. 4; I didn't pay extra for fast shipping, so it will take a few days for them to arrive. (Probably just as well, and I should, y'know, write stuff in my free time, since I'm trying to finish that fanfic before season two begins.)

slightly spoilery reaction to new Doctor Who )

I had a lovely Labor Day weekend, and can't quite believe that the alarm clock will be sounding at 5:30 tomorrow morning. There wasn't enough time to do all the things I wanted to do!

BSG remix reveals have been posted. I wrote The Hour Is Getting Late, a tiny fic with Tory's POV during the season three finale. Tory/Sam, PG-13.

While I think the end result is fine, I sort of wish I could ask for a do-over. It was incredibly frustrating trying to write Battlestar Galactica fanfic when my brain was wanting to focus on new show. Apparently I'm a serial fandom monogamist, and BSG is no longer in dominant position. It was only a matter of time; other than one exception, every story I've written for other fandoms was done after the BSG finale in 2009.

That made me start thinking about what factors lead to me writing fic )

*laughs* Apparently number three proves I'm just stubborn and perverse. This isn't news to me.

Someday I'll write up my thoughts on how John Reese is not an alpha male (although he is a creepy stalker), but today isn't that day. Instead, here's a ramble about POV characters while I'm watching TV. ramble Doctor Who ramble Person of Interest ramble Battlestar Galactica ramble )

So what about you? Do you tend to stay focused on one or two characters, or are you an ensemble viewer, or something else?

I watched the pilot episode for Missing online. not very spoilery, but cutting anyway )

I'm on board so far. Hopefully this show isn't done by Warner, the company that has made it so difficult to get episodes of Person of Interest. (Difficult enough that I may have to wait and watch season two of PofI on DVD months later, since Big Brother will officially be watching our internet usage starting this summer.) I still can't believe that Warner won't even offer episodes for legal sale online the next day.

Moving on. It's fic rec time! Doctor Who, Parks and Recreation, Fringe, Person of Interest )
rose_griffes: Leslie Knope loves her pancakes (pancakes)
Thursday, March 15th, 2012 01:35 pm
Pulled weeds for a while. Scrubbed wallpaper glue and smoothing plaster from approximately 8 square feet of wall. Decided to work on kiss and not make up fic, which is suddenly evolving into "Let me explore all the motivations and questions and plot-holes that the show never addresses" fic. Why you gotta do this to me, brain?!

Hey look, Leslie Knope made it to the final round of Fandom March Madness. Huh, I'm amazed. Not quite as torn over the Leslie versus Donna Noble vote as I was Leslie versus Hermione. I love Donna, but Leslie is the reason I watch Parks and Recreation. (It's an ensemble show, but without Leslie, I wouldn't keep watching. Can't say the same of Doctor Who.)

This is one of those things that's probably way more amusing to write than to read. :) Thanks for the prompt, Liz!

untitled crossover fic(let)
fandoms: Person of Interest, Doctor Who
characters: John Reese, Harold Finch, Martha Jones
rating: G
summary: Finch is secretly an alien, Martha is his doctor, Reese is clueless.
word count: under 700
prompt from Liz: I don't know much about Martha, but I should think she'd cross over with PoI pretty well since she lives in our time, and she's a doctor and she might travel to NY even w/o the Doctor around... ;)
notes: 1) Not beta-read, lemme know if I missed something. 2) Finch as a (mostly) benign alien works frighteningly well.

There were voices coming from the center of the library. )

Since bsg_epics was asking about fandom pairs we like and why, here, have a post I started a few weeks ago and then forgot about. Probably because I was writing Zoe Morgan/John Reese fic again. (Heh.)

TV shows I've loved and the ships I've, er, sailed )

Guess what, you guys! I was googling detective joss carter, as you do when you're looking for pictures of Taraji P. Henson looking cop-like and carrying a gun, and I WAS IN THE TOP TEN RESULTS! My LJ and Dreamwidth were, that is. It was this post, by the way. And now I'm wondering: what if I didn't cross-post entries to dreamwidth and only my LJ entry existed. It would have been higher on the page, right? 'Cause all the hits would be on the one entry? I COULDA BEEN A CONTENDER! *giggles a lot*

Ahaha, and now I've looked at page two of the results, and there are two more pages from my DW account.

Um. On that highly amusing (and really weird) note, I have some fic recs. Let's start with Person of Interest... fic recs for PofI, Fringe, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and Doctor Who )
rose_griffes: Kara Thrace, Sam Anders, Battlestar Galactica finale (wake)
Wednesday, October 12th, 2011 05:53 pm
The Kara/Sam fic exchange has started posting, and the story written for me was one of the two posted today! This Could Take All Night. My prompt was post-poof Kara going to find Sam and teaching him how to be physically solid at will, and I love how this story takes that idea and DOES AWESOME THINGS WITH IT!

Y'know, I liked participating in Yuletide and getting a story (actually two), but getting a story written as a present for me with my favorite couple FILLS ME WITH GLEE! (Also, since I know many of the Kara/Sam writers on LJ, I can start guessing who wrote my story and have a reasonable chance of being right. Heh.)

a few more recs back here: BSG, Firefly, Harry Potter and Doctor Who )

One last rec, for Tangled fic: dark come soon (I'm almost there), G. Rapunzel and Mother Gothel. *shivers*

I have a few other fics for Tangled bookmarked under misc-fic. Lots of other fandom fic there as well.
rose_griffes: Anastasia Dualla--close-up of her gorgeous eyes (dee)
Sunday, October 9th, 2011 03:02 pm
It's clean up the hard drive day! I have several unfinished fics (mostly for Battlestar Galactica) that are going to stay unfinished--some for good reason. Before I delete them, I'm posting any coherent snippets here.

You're welcome. *laughs*

First up: Lee, post-finale the start of something bigger (only I never wrote past the start) )

Something that might be a snippet I started as a remix story... I don't even remember for sure! Therefore I shouldn't cross-post it anywhere anyway, right? Kara and Helo, pre-mini series (hints at future Dualla/Helo)
blackmailing for chocolate )

Crossover! The Tenth Doctor and D'Anna Biers. Set post-finale for BSG. Post season four for Ten, in the middle of those specials and before his death tour. Or maybe during the death tour, I don't remember now. Oh, and the companion D'Anna met once before was Martha.last of their kind )

Another crossover: BSG and Firefly. Set post-Serenity and whenever for BSG. Anytime is a good time to redeem Boomer, right? (Though with the references to dead cylon bodies floating in space, mid-season two would make sense.)
'I thought the cylons up and left this quadrant' )

The season finale of Doctor Who was last night. spoilers, sweetie )

I watched the pilot episode of Revenge. Then I watched episode two straightaway, because this is the one show that managed to fall into the irrational love category so far. premise spoilers )

And I watched the pilot of Terra Nova. (I graded a LOT of papers this week, which is how I managed to 'watch' so much TV.) slight spoilers )

General conclusions: watch Revenge for plot, long story arc, good acting and compelling characters. Watch Terra Nova for dinosaurs.

I haven't watched any of the new comedies. Also haven't watched Ringer, but apparently even Sarah Michelle Gellar can't save it from mediocrity. Don't care about Pan Am or that one with the Playboy bunnies.

my must-watch list of new shows:
Revenge
Prime Suspect

shows I'll probably keep watching:
Person of Interest
Terra Nova

returning shows that I like:
Parks and Recreation
Community
(probably... I wasn't enamored of the latter half of season two, but in the premiere there was Inspector Spacetime and I was delighted)

And now there's no more Doctor Who for ages and ages and I'm sad. *sniffles*

I'm sooooo tired. Just got back from Whole Foods Market. I've been meaning to go there for weeks to buy some tahini so I can try making my own hummus. I'm not sure how that ended up being fifty dollars worth of groceries. Oops.

Anyway... I have links. First Twilight. Remember how I once said maybe Meyer should have titled her novel The Vampire's Forbidden Virgin Bride? (What, you don't remember everything I post?!) Well, behold: The Vampire and the Virgin.
I... sort of want to read that.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn movie trailer has the most dramatic envelope ever.

Helen Keeble's thoughts about the Twilight series: They are so purely and unapologetically what they are that I have to admire Meyers for getting away with that (I like to imagine her slapping a huge wodge of cash down on her editor’s desk and declaring, “In my next installment of my series featuring chaste sparkly perfect boyfriends marketed at young teens, I shall damn well have a Caesarian-by-vampire-fang scene if I damn well want! And you will like it!“).
hee!

On to the mish-mash of other links...

Six Obnoxious Assumptions Hollywood Makes About Women.

Two Three Doctor Who links:
Doctor Who theme music as Belgian jazz, complete with French monologue about the Doctor. Hah!

Fanfic rec: that was just a dream by [personal profile] such_heights. Massive spoilers for episode 6.11.

eta: another fic rec--and all our yesterdays. Great big spoilers for 6.10. (This is what I want for, um, the other Amy.)

Last but definitely not least: "cookie dough" dip. It uses chickpeas! Apparently delicious and sneakily sort of healthy! (I'm trying it sometime soon; I'll let you know. Soon is relative, since I'm cutting way, way down on sugar again. Just had my first 'relapse' but I blame Whole Foods Market and their dark chocolate yogurt. It was tasty and I regret nothing.)

Still have a cold. Lazing around the house, falling asleep every time I try to read. Debating over work versus no work for tomorrow. Do I really want to get lesson plans ready for a substitute? I'm not sure I feel quite that awful. Then again, I'm not sure I feel good enough to talk all day long either.

Caught up on Doctor Who episodes:
6.08 Let's Kill that one spoilery name only not really )

6.09 the one with the scared little boy )

6.10 the one with the plan that (shockingly) went awry )

My own speculation about the Ponds: or possibly my own hopes )

Looks like I'll get to start watching episodes via amazon.com again. At the beginning of season 6.0 Amazon didn't have Doctor Who available so I didn't even check when season 6.5 started. But baby brother just informed me that he's watching them through Amazon, so yay for that! (I did find other sources for watching, but I haven't stopped being nervous about it. Computer viruses and such. Plus I don't mind supporting the shows I like by paying a bit.)

Lastly: since I've been thinking about writing Martha and Mickey baby-fic, I sort of want to include a scene with the Doctor double-checking that they didn't actually conceive while traveling on the TARDIS... just 'cause it amuses me.

(Eleven: "You're sure you didn't conceive this baby while on the TARDIS?"
Martha: "Doctor, we haven't even seen you in over a year!")

(Oh dear. Possibly a Martha/Mickey time!baby story amuses me even more than just a baby story?!)
