[livejournal.com profile] sabaceanbabe recently made this post with a list of what she viewed as her best works in fic-writing. It was interesting, the trends I spotted in her favorite stories that match trends in mine as well, such as lots of minor characters getting major roles in fic. That and not usually writing fandom's preferred pairing, whatever pair that may be. I was already inclined in that direction, but S'babe's stories were an influence in those earliest months.

So since I started off following her, I decided to make a similar post with stories I've written. some of my favorite fanfics back here )

Seven years of fic-writing summed up there. I still wish I wrote faster; stories that are started and done within two days are emphatically the exception.

BSG remix reveals have been posted. I wrote The Hour Is Getting Late, a tiny fic with Tory's POV during the season three finale. Tory/Sam, PG-13.

While I think the end result is fine, I sort of wish I could ask for a do-over. It was incredibly frustrating trying to write Battlestar Galactica fanfic when my brain was wanting to focus on new show. Apparently I'm a serial fandom monogamist, and BSG is no longer in dominant position. It was only a matter of time; other than one exception, every story I've written for other fandoms was done after the BSG finale in 2009.

That made me start thinking about what factors lead to me writing fic )

*laughs* Apparently number three proves I'm just stubborn and perverse. This isn't news to me.

It's been ages since I talked about the show Life here, but someone pointed out recently that Netflix has both seasons available for livestreaming. Then I checked and they're accessible again on hulu.com (for free!) as well.

So if you're in the US and you haven't watched it before, you might consider giving season one a try; it's only eleven episodes due to the writers' strike in 2007-2008. I would view it as sort of a mini-series. The show is definitely a procedural, but the emphasis is on the characters, two cops named Charlie Crews and Dani Reese. Plus there's a bigger puzzle going on with Crews's (and Reese's) history that gets addressed in each episode as well.

Need more information? Show premise and picspam here, plus an awesome fanvid here. (Slight language alert for both.)

Person of Interest fans who haven't seen Life yet, you should definitely consider it. They have a lot of similar themes. Both film on location in a major US city and use that backdrop well. (Life had better cinematography, although sunny LA gives it an advantage over gray NYC, too.) Both feature characters shaped by their pasts in inescapable ways. Both shows have Batman references! Oh, and both shows have a character with the last name Reese. Heh.

In Life's favor, it has Damian Lewis, Sarah Shahi and Adam Arkin, and they're pretty much unbeatable. Sorry, PoI cast, but it's true. Though at least part of that is that Life had better writing--dialogue in particular--since it was more character-based. I'll give PoI a point for having better cases of the week, so it probably balances out.

In conclusion, I miss the show characters. *sadface*

Since bsg_epics was asking about fandom pairs we like and why, here, have a post I started a few weeks ago and then forgot about. Probably because I was writing Zoe Morgan/John Reese fic again. (Heh.)

Dani Reese got lost once, really lost. Pieces of her from before are never going to fit who she is now, but she's still a good cop.

Okay, everyone, listen up! Battlestar Galactica is being ignored and I don't like it! I'm talking about [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. Looks like [livejournal.com profile] frolicndetour gets to make recs for January, but there's no one else signed up after that! My last turn was just in July 2009, so I don't think I should sign up just yet. Go here to sign up for a turn. It's not that hard, really! And I'm happy to be bossy about how to do it correctly help out, if needed.

I have some fic recs, and I was thinking of you as I compiled them. This doesn't mean you have to like them--people have different tastes in stories.

for [livejournal.com profile] queenofthorns: Ultraviolet fic recs. Still no Angie/Vaughan that I've found, alas. But here are five gen stories I quite like. back here )

For [livejournal.com profile] nicole_anell, a Gaius POV ficlet that maybe you've never read? I quite enjoyed it: Children of the Gods, by [livejournal.com profile] shaychana. Him, head!Six, Gina, Caprica... for a short fic it has a lot to say. Written sometime during season three, I believe.

For [livejournal.com profile] grimorie (and all other Life fans): Conversations Neatly Placed in Tired Mouths , by [livejournal.com profile] piecesofalice. Also in this year's Yuletide archive--and that's such an overwhelming place, I thought maybe some of you might need a little help to get there. This story is Dani's POV about Charlie and Ted. Lovely gen piece. (I'm still looking through the archives myself! But there are TEN Life stories just for this year's Yuletide, so it will be great fun to sort through that!

For [livejournal.com profile] njborba--I think you prefer to write fanfic rather than read it, but this story in The Pretender fandom has Broots, his daughter Debbie, Miss Parker and Jarod. Plus it ends with a brief (fade to black) steamy Miss P/Jarod interlude. untitled, by [livejournal.com profile] juliefortune. (General warning--does contain non-specific references to child endangerment/molestation.) Too many of the old archives with fic from this show have disappeared; it's frustrating.

For anyone who likes both The Pretender and 30 Rock, [livejournal.com profile] piecesofalice has written a crossover fic with those two fandoms. Yes, really. This Is Going To Get Weird, Isn't It. *giggles* It is GREAT!

For [livejournal.com profile] siljamus: finding shippy fics that you haven't already read is hard! So... I have a mostly gen Ironman fic with a side of unrequited Tony/Pepper--also humorous kidnapping (really!) and banter. That Time with the Dobermans (and the Hole in the Wall), by [livejournal.com profile] mspotts.

My other attempt for Silja: Earth Girls Are Easy, a BSG/ER crossover story with Felix Gaeta/Lucy Knight. (She was the pretty ash-blonde med student on ER who was killed by a crazy patient. [livejournal.com profile] rap541 decided to give her a better ending.)

Coming up next: I try to fulfill some people's actual wish list requests by figuring out (again) how to upload music to sendspace.com or whatever site I used last year... Wish me luck!

For a summer that wasn't going to include much travel, I sure did travel a lot. June: four days of camping, then two weeks of travel, including Niagara Falls, Quebec City and Pennsylvania. July: a week-long teaching conference (within my state, but at a touristy destination), visits with the family and an old high school friend... I haven't been home much (er, where I live now, I mean). Now that August is here, I'm busy planning school stuff. I have a two-day presentation to prepare for, a brief break, then back to the grind of teacher inservices (taught by other people) before students finally come back.

Where did my time go? Oh yeah, to traveling. Heh. No wonder I haven't added much to my 2009 book list.

Anyway, here's an update on fannish things (aka movies/TV and writing/reading related to it) (spoilers for the trailer for BSG's 'The Plan'):
not a lot to say... )

I bought a shiny, BIG new knife the other day. Chopping vegetables was fun! WHEEEEE!

I believe that you should all refer to me as [livejournal.com profile] rose_griffes now. Or how about [livejournal.com profile] rose_griffes

Pretty Life fanvid here, by [livejournal.com profile] humansrsuperior.
(link from [livejournal.com profile] grimorie... or maybe I should say [livejournal.com profile] grimorie

I have Battlestar Galactica episode insert fic started that's just not going to be done before the next episode. (Helo: why so untalkative right now?) So now I'm hoping that the next episode jumps ahead a week or more, and that there are few or no explanations for all that Helo-related stuff. That way I can go ahead and finish my fic!
*hopes*

Oh. Probably time to see if those vegetables I chopped are actually done cooking now. Then dinner. Then grading papers. My life is apparently so exciting that chopping vegetables is a highlight. Heh.

PS: will watch Lost tomorrow...

eta: THIS SOUP IS DELICIOUS! It has Cajun boudin in it instead of Italian sausage.

I just watched the most recent episodes of Pushing Daisies and Life
*flails*

Oh, shows!

You know the drill. There is no analysis or substance behind these cuts. Just me randomly reacting.
Life 2.11 and 2.12 )

Pushing Daisies 2.10 )

Hm. I should try and track down that Muppet Christmas special that was on last night.

Not currently watching the BSG mini-sodes or webisodes or whatever you want to call them. I didn't watch the previous set (for 3.0) until I had to for fic-writing purposes. I'm just... thoroughly disinterested. Considering that they were written and recorded after season 4.5 was already finished, I'm not worried about missing out on vital information. Though reading everyone else's reaction is highly amusing.

I think I'll try to be coherent about TV in this post. Wish me luck!
*takes another aspirin*

First off, Sanctuary. For those not in the know, it's on the Sci-Fi channel. I'm watching it through hulu.com. It's got Amanda Tapping as the female lead--she played the cute short-haired blonde on Stargate.

Dang, I'm posty this week.

1) The Life season two premiere is up early at http://www.hulu.com/life. 'Find Your Happy Place.' I think it's only there for today. I'm assuming it'll be back again after the show actually airs. Apparently it's there all week. My own assessment of the episode? Mixed. Hm. We'll see how it plays out with the new cast member and Dani's new hair. (Hey, I liked her serious cop hair. Seeing it loose is just disconcerting.)

2) Amazon.com is having a 50% sale on some boxed DVD sets.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&plgroup=4&docId=1000276231&plpage=1
Hee, they have the old WonderWoman show! With Lynda Carter! Man, I loved that show when I was little. (I'm not buying it, but I feel very nostalgic now.)
Oooh, Red Dwarf too!

3) Yes, I have successfully installed a moodtheme. Actually I installed two, but I'm not sure how you're supposed to get both to work at the same time. So the one currently active is the 'Amélie' moodtheme, which is just gorgeous.

Taken from lots of people (in my usual belated fashion):

Tell me about a story I haven't written, and I'll give you one sentence from that story.
Fandoms I feel like trying: Battlestar Galactica (obviously), Harry Potter, Anne of Green Gables, Angel, Life...
It might be more than one sentence. We'll see.

eta: Or just give me a regular prompt. I have some boring meeting time soon; maybe this will spark an idea.

I have a present. It's angst.

This fic is for Life, a fabulous show that you should be watching. All eleven season one episodes are available in the US through online streaming here. I wrote a brief explanation about the show premise a few months ago, mostly because I wanted to post pictures of Damian Lewis.

title: Interim
rating and warnings: PG-13; implied violence
characters: Charlie Crews, Constance Griffiths (vaguely Charlie/Connie, to the degree we've seen on the show so far). Brief mention of Ted Earley.
spoilers: through pilot episode only
word count: just over 1000
thanks: to [livejournal.com profile] millari for beta-reading the second draft; also to [livejournal.com profile] raincitygirl for looking over the first draft and reassuring me that it wasn't horrible.
YES, I'm nervous about posting fic for a show other than Battlestar Galactica

People of the US who are not yet watching Life. It's time to start! NBC has reposted all eleven episodes on its website here. Then you can join the community [livejournal.com profile] pers_pineapple and be fannish as we start a rewatch of those episodes. (BTW, the community name is short for personal pineapple; the male lead on the show has a fruit obsession. Did I mention he's played by the fabulous Damian Lewis? Start watching already!)

eta: Here, go read someone else's nicely succinct paragraph on why you should watch.

What else? Oh yeah. Leoben Conoy Appreciation Week--I figure I'll have it Monday 1/14 through Friday 1/18. Here's my current plan:

Ugh, usually I love Saturday naps but today I woke up with that eyes-glued-shut brain unwired feeling. I still feel about three steps behind my body.

I need to do more shopping but I'm putting it off. Too scary to contemplate the stores right now. (Hm, if I keep putting it off I'll have to deal with the stores on Christmas Eve. That's even more scary.)

Feel like being tortured by incomplete stories? Then this is the post for you! Here are some stories I'm never going to finish. Two are for Battlestar Galactica, one for Life.

First up, Gaeta on Earth. This whole idea lost momentum with, um, certain revelations in the season three finale.
sorry, Felix )

Here's one for Life. The fic itself just doesn't work for me, but I liked the last bit--it has partners hugging! Always a favorite theme in fic for me.
non-shippy buddy cop hug )

Someone thought a Leoben Christmas fic would be interesting. So now I've (gently) mocked one of my own church experiences and made Leoben possibly sacrilegious. Heh. What's really scary is I could write more to this, but I think I'd better stop now before I commit any more accidental blasphemy.

Wednesday night: movie! Enchanted! So cute, go watch it now! I may have to watch it again while it's still in theaters. This was the first time that I could appreciate James Marsden's acting ability--he was spot-on as Prince Edward. (I thought the writing shortchanged Scott Summers/Cyclops in the X-Men movies, but I also wasn't that impressed with Marsden. Nice to know he's got some talent.)

Thursday night: pay bills while watching Without a Trace. And look, there was James Marsters (Spike) onscreen! Fun! Apparently he's been in a few episodes this season.

Tonight: finally catch up on watching Life. Whoa. WHOA! WHOOOOAAAAAA, go watch this show. Episode 10, 'Dig a Hole' and 11 'Fill It Up' were just amazing, especially 11. Damian Lewis is incredible. Also, Batman and Alfred reference! *grins* (Ted is definitely Alfred.)

I have some work I need to do tonight. *sigh*

I sort-of accidentally spoiled myself for some season four BSG stuff... after vowing that I'd stay away from spoilers. *double sigh*

But--Life has been given a contract for a full season... if the strike ends in time, naturally. So yay for that! And in celebration, here's a 'Life' picspam made by [livejournal.com profile] vonnie_k. Pretty pretty people.

Also, the [livejournal.com profile] bsg_hiatusthon is off to a smashing start for its first challenge. There will be fic or other fannish creations posted most days between now and December 25th. Yay!

EEEEE! This is the bestest evening ever! Except for the fact that I'm staying at home because I still don't feel 100% well. Okay, so in spite of that, things have conspired to put me in a good mood:

1) [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 wrote a Kara/Lee ficlet that's making me smile. I love happy/sweet fics (that don't go overboard with the shmoopiness). And I love fics that talk about Earth ('cause I'm biased that way, since my first fic ever was an on-Earth fic)... and voila, Deliverance. *big ol' grin*

2) I finally watched this week's Life. Wednesday night TV is so awesome! (Even though I don't get to watch any of it on Wednesday. And, NO, Bionic Woman is NOT included in my Wednesday TV-glee, but Pushing Daisies is.) Seriously, if you've been thinking about checking out an episode of Life, this would be an excellent week. Episode 1.08, 'Farthingale.' I'm assuming it's posted on NBC's webpage. (I don't know for sure, because I did go ahead and purchase a season pass for Life through Amazon Unbox. I wanted to support the show, and since I can't watch live, this is the next best thing.)

3) One day of work next week. Yeah, that's right. Just one. *happy dance*

Speaking of #3, it's prompt time! Yes, Monday will be comprised of boring meetings. I make NO guarantees for any actual fic, but feel free to suggest something.

Two more interesting Razor posts. [livejournal.com profile] prolix_allie. has lots of speculation about the meaning of that line near the end, plus an overview of the ep here. [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 wrote her thoughts about Razor with her usual pro-Kara stance and a surprising amount of pro-Lee stuff.

And now some totally random stuff.
Ever since [livejournal.com profile] dionusia embedded this video by Norwegian duo Kings of Convenience, I've been playing it over and over again. I finally downloaded the song from Amazon's new music service (eighty-nine cents, and it works in my mp3 player, unlike iTunes music downloads). Most adorable video online ever, and the song is catchy in a good way, not in a "get it out of my head" way.

Girls' night in last Friday. We started a season three Lost marathon--made it through the first four episodes. does anyone reading this actually care about season three Lost spoilers? )

By the way, ABC's online viewing has this annoying feature--when the commercial break is done you have to click to continue the show. Irritating to get up from the comfy chair for that.

The local tv guide lists a program this week called The 50 Greatest TV icons. Someone wrote a blurb about it that started with this sentence: "No, we're not talking about those little pictures on your computer." Heh. I'm guessing most people reading a printed tv guide won't have any idea what icons on a computer are.

It's been fun seeing a fandom in its baby-stage. So far all of the fics posted at [livejournal.com profile] life_fic have been good... a few even awesome. And only seven episodes of the show have aired so far! Speaking of Life: Damian Lewis in a tux. Niiiiiiiice. You can click on the picture to get a higher-res version.
