Attempting a quick update: my country is on fire.

Not literally. Yet.

I'm going to ignore that and focus on recent media consumption. Still watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season seven, and cackled aloud multiple times during the episode set in the 1980s. The multiple 80s media references were hilarious and spot-on, including the robots with human voices, exaggerated blood splatter accompanying an offscreen death, disembodied digital heads on tv, and Russians with short-cropped blond hair. Oh, and Mack's "tie on the headband" montage! Hee!

Roommate H and I are watching Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings adaptation. It's been a looooong time since I've watched them. H hasn't seen them, so I'm enjoying her newby reactions. The most common one is simply confusion at the many, many names. The Nazgul are the Dark Riders are the Ring Wraiths are the Nine, just for example. She does like them so far, even if she finds them a bit intense at times. Her media choices don't usually include battle scenes, for instance.

Even I'm finding things a bit much at times. I'll need to brace myself for The Return of the King, given that it has moooore battle scenes than the other two movies.

No book update now; I'm re-reading a favorite fanfic instead. Because my country is on not-literal fire and I can't focus.

Not media: I tried this grain-free, dairy-free brownie recipe and liked it. I had my usual reaction to this type of recipe: at first I have to process how it's different from the standard end result, so I don't really know how I feel about the altered product until a few bites later.

Anyway, all of this to say: reasonably tasty and acceptable in texture, but would be even better with some pecans and marshmallows.

I'm writing that Fusco fic. IT'S TAKING SO LONG. Ugh. Granted, forward progress of any kind is better than, well, the last three years of not working on it at all. So there's that.

That T. Kingfisher novel Paladin's Grace is indeed just what I said before: a romance/adventure novel in a fantasy setting. It's an interesting hybrid. Very enjoyable, if a bit like eating one of those unusual fusion cuisine dishes that blend flavors that you wouldn't expect to work together. Definitely interested in reading more by the author.

Lila Bowen's Wake of Vultures was also a wild ride, although with fewer genres in the mix. Think alternate history western with monsters, featuring a biracial lead who goes on a (literal) journey of discovery. I'll probably read more in this series, although I'm not in a rush.

Renee Ahdieh's The Beautiful does something that has to be executed EXTREMELY well for me to enjoy it: it has sections written from the point of view of the ~evil killer~. It wasn't working for me, but more importantly, the narrative from the main character's point of view was also not working for me. I did like the world-building--up to the point where I stopped reading. Maybe something else by Ahdieh will click better, although maybe-murderous bad boys seem to feature in her other books? Hm.

I had grilled pork chops for dinner that I grilled myself. So proud! And currently I'm munching on cinnamon-sugar buttered popcorn, which is tasty.

Twice in the last month or so I've mentioned jar salads--once here, once in the comments elsewhere--and people were intrigued! Excited! And other positive things! So: here's one guide explaining the basics. Read that, and then my own advice: make a salad to eat in your usual salad bowl at the same time as you make 2-3 salads in a jar. That way you can use the same amounts for your ingredients in the jars as you normally would in a bowl.

I often take jar salads to work, along with an empty plate or bowl big enough for serving. Keep it cool until mealtime, shake it well, and dump it in the serving dish. You can eat from the jar, but that gets messy.

A lot of the jar salad links show the jar absolutely packed with ingredients. Me, I leave some empty space at the top. I don't need that much food at lunchtime--I have less than 30 minutes to eat on workdays (when I'm actually, y'know, teaching instead of this haphazard and frustrating distance learning) and it's hard to get the salad dressing to coat the other ingredients if the jar is too full.

It's almost May the Fourth! So! Star Wars stuff )

I just made this recipe for banana oatmeal "cookies". Please note, the term cookie is used in the sense that they're roundish and sweet-ish. Otherwise there's no flour, hardly any added sugar, and so forth. I only made them because I had two over-ripe bananas and I didn't want to go to the trouble of making banana bread. Too much work; this was easier, and a theoretically healthy snack. (Note: these smell better than they taste. Not that they taste bad to me, but when they were baking, they smelled amazing, but when they were done, they were a pleasant fruity-oaty snack. So take that for what it's worth.

Er, somehow I finished watching season one of Call the Midwife. I'm not sure how that happened, although some of that can be attributed to the fact that there are only six episodes in season one. Okay, that's not so bad, then. Anyway, if you give it a try, have some tissues at hand. I ended up sobbing near the end of episode four. Not just teary-eyed, not just sniffly, but full-on sobs. So. But it's really, really good, I promise!

What else? Hm, I think that's it. I have stuff I should work on, but I just baked! Or 'baked'. So clearly I deserve a bit of a rest now. ;-P

I need to get off this couch and go make a dessert for tomorrow. (Co-worker's birthday.) But I don't waaaaaaaaaaannnnnna get up. Also, Buckeye Brownie cookies or chocolate chip cheesecake? Huh, looking at the second recipe, it calls for two 3-oz. packages of cream cheese. I don't think I've ever seen cream cheese sold in packages that tiny. The package in my fridge right now is eight ounces.

The school year continues apace. That is a really weird word, now that I think about it. Apace. And I'm pretty sure I've only seen it used with the verb continue. You could say he worked apace, but no one does, right? Or She ate apace. We danced apace. Etc.

Okay, rather than write about the other stuff I was going to mention the next time I posted, I'm going to get up and make dessert. Cheesecake wins, simply because I have an inherent distrust of recipes that call for boxes of cake/brownie/cookie mix. (Or rather, that don't make a list of what supplies you could use if you don't happen to have the required box mix on hand.)

Really, cheesecake wins because CHEESECAKE.

1. How did I manage to get two episodes behind on Parks and Recreation? And no time to watch either of them before tomorrow. (In part because I'll be watching Person of Interest tonight.)

2. I've seen the movie Life of Pi twice in movie theaters in the last two weeks. It's gorgeous, both for its visuals and the narrative. Bravo to whatever person out there chose Suraj Sharma for the lead, because he did a beautiful job. (The movie is already on DVD, but it's also playing at the last-run theater a couple of suburbs away.)

3. I may try reading the book someday, but I want to wait a while. The story via movie was so complete and thought-provoking that I don't want to replace that vision with the author's... not just yet.

4. Currently in the top spot for most delicious sandwich: hummus and avocado. Messy but delicious.

5. My current plan while dealing with depression: "There is one goal, and only one goal, and that goal is to get out of bed on time." It's actually been very helpful. Maybe more on that front later, but I wanted to mention it before forgetting to post anything. My livejournal feels neglected lately.

It's Thanksgiving here in the US, and I'm grateful for:
  • my sister-in-law's sweet potato soufflé, quite possibly the most wondrous Thanksgiving dessert ever created

  • my adorable youngest niece with her head of curly hair

  • a quiet bedroom where I can retreat if the cute nieces and nephews are too much

  • feeling like a normal human being now that I'm over the horrible stomach virus

  • having only the epilogue left to write for popcorn fic (ALMOST DONE!!!)

  • lovely people like you to interact with

  • a job that I enjoy

  • and many more things...

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

  1. I was doing my usual thing of making crock-pot yogurt, only it didn't work. That happens now and then, although it's been a long time since I last did (or didn't do) whatever one does (or doesn't do) to make yogurt not happen. Instead of dumping it out right away after realizing my failure, I left it overnight and this morning there was something that tasted like sour cream in there. Low-fat sour cream, I suppose, since it was made with low-fat milk. THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. Weird. I don't know whether to dump it or make a lot of burritos and eat it.

  2. I ate one of those Boca burgers for the first time the other day. It was the spicy black bean burger: surprisingly tasty! I wouldn't consider it a good substitute for meat (because I like meat), but as its own thing it was very good.

  3. Popcorn fic progress: the prologue is basically done at just over 600 words. Chapter one: at last, I've finally gotten Carter and Reese out of New York City. Currently around 2700 words of fic, and a ridiculous amount of that is expositional dialogue. Argh.

  4. 2700 words sounds like a nice, big number. For me. Yay, me!

  5. Though really, I hope I can pick up the pace a bit. It's already June 27, and WHY AM I STILL NOT DONE, UGH, THIS IS GOING ON FOREVER and there are supposed to be seven chapters of this?!

  6. number four sounded way better than number five

I'm sooooo tired. Just got back from Whole Foods Market. I've been meaning to go there for weeks to buy some tahini so I can try making my own hummus. I'm not sure how that ended up being fifty dollars worth of groceries. Oops.

Anyway... I have links. First Twilight. Remember how I once said maybe Meyer should have titled her novel The Vampire's Forbidden Virgin Bride? (What, you don't remember everything I post?!) Well, behold: The Vampire and the Virgin.
I... sort of want to read that.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn movie trailer has the most dramatic envelope ever.

Helen Keeble's thoughts about the Twilight series: They are so purely and unapologetically what they are that I have to admire Meyers for getting away with that (I like to imagine her slapping a huge wodge of cash down on her editor’s desk and declaring, “In my next installment of my series featuring chaste sparkly perfect boyfriends marketed at young teens, I shall damn well have a Caesarian-by-vampire-fang scene if I damn well want! And you will like it!“).
hee!

On to the mish-mash of other links...

Six Obnoxious Assumptions Hollywood Makes About Women.

Two Three Doctor Who links:
Doctor Who theme music as Belgian jazz, complete with French monologue about the Doctor. Hah!

Fanfic rec: that was just a dream by [personal profile] such_heights. Massive spoilers for episode 6.11.

eta: another fic rec--and all our yesterdays. Great big spoilers for 6.10. (This is what I want for, um, the other Amy.)

Last but definitely not least: "cookie dough" dip. It uses chickpeas! Apparently delicious and sneakily sort of healthy! (I'm trying it sometime soon; I'll let you know. Soon is relative, since I'm cutting way, way down on sugar again. Just had my first 'relapse' but I blame Whole Foods Market and their dark chocolate yogurt. It was tasty and I regret nothing.)

Time to go find The Thief next? Possibly so.

I baked tonight. I baked yummy, yummy things: a green chili casserole (with sour cream!) and banana-apple bread. SOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOD!

These last few weeks have been busy--not in a bad way, just busy. But it's a bit sad to realize that I've only watched five episodes of Doctor Who season four in the last month, and I haven't opened my Farscape DVD's yet. I have a pile of four unfinished books next to my bed. Plus I haven't done much fic-writing, until today.

Current fanfiction status: about 4000 words of Settlement-era fic done. It goes over some of what I wrote before, from Mark the Two's point of view. At 4000 words, I'm guessing I'm only halfway done. If I can finish before the end of December, it will definitely be a record for number of words of fanfiction written in one year by me. (Um... in the three years I've been doing this. Heh.) Actually, I may be past 2007's total already anyway. Hm.

Oh, and I have a complete draft of the deadly serious "Racetrack is a lycan" fic. It may need more work still, but that's okay. Complete draft, yay!

Other accomplishment of the day: I made a second batch of the crockpot yogurt. a few remarks about that )

Final conclusion: this version of making yogurt requires some actual attention. But it will definitely save you money, if you eat a lot of yogurt.

Wow, how did it get this late? Oh yeah, I was writing fanfic and making yogurt. And not cleaning my home, which is now quite cluttered. Oops.

I'll just say it right now: I can be picky about food. Not in a taste sense (well, that too sometimes), but about the ingredients. I don't buy only organic, but I do pay a certain amount of attention to how many unpronouceable things are on any product list.

Flavored yogurt is often one of the worst offenders, so I buy plain yogurt and mix in a bit of sweetener (usually a spoonful of maple syrup) and jam. Since I also try to avoid dairy products that have been made with herds fed growth hormones (to stimulate more milk production), I've ended up paying a lot more for yogurt than I used to--not just in the actual price, but by going out of my way to the specialty grocery store to find the yogurt I like best.

So I decided to make my own. I've done so before, but it's been several years. Last weekend I tried it and forgot one of the cardinal rules in yogurt-making. This weekend I succeeded again, yay!

I have Battlestar Galactica episode insert fic started that's just not going to be done before the next episode. (Helo: why so untalkative right now?) So now I'm hoping that the next episode jumps ahead a week or more, and that there are few or no explanations for all that Helo-related stuff. That way I can go ahead and finish my fic!
*hopes*

Oh. Probably time to see if those vegetables I chopped are actually done cooking now. Then dinner. Then grading papers. My life is apparently so exciting that chopping vegetables is a highlight. Heh.

Has anyone read The Lies of Locke Lamora yet? I started this week and I love the world-building... but the title character is currently leaving me cold. I'm wondering if it's worth it to continue.

I'm sure everyone needs an illustrated version of Tom Lehrer's song 'The Elements.' (Tune stolen from Gilbert and Sullivan, if I remember correctly.) This is the kind of music my dad used to play around the house when I was growing up, which probably explains a lot. *g*

I watched some Pushing Daisies (season one) with various family members this past week. I'd forgotten just how funny some of those episodes were. Baby brother was totally hooked. Mwahahaha!

Also watched a few episodes of What Not to Wear. One of the fun parts of visiting my parents--real TV! My sister had never seen it before. She was a bit incredulous at the whole thing. ("They throw your clothes away? Wait... how do you get picked to be on the show anyway?")

Thanksgiving day was full of the usual turkey and so forth. One real perk of being an adult in a large family is the specialization for food preparation. No one gets stuck with most of the cooking, and we each fix the stuff we're good at making. So... lots of delicious food. It was lovely!

A bit after the big meal we did the usual ballgame. No, not watching a game on TV... playing a game with a ball in the backyard. Last year it was ball tag, this year we played kickball. All ages welcome. My sister ran bases with a six-month-old carefully balanced on her hip. Middle brother played shortstop with his three-year-old daughter perched on his back.

I have an awesome family.

Okay, time to clean more of my home. Plus I need to think of what else to add to my LJ Christmas wish list.

Went to the Big City last night to see a play--it was a very interactive (cheer, boo and hiss, throw popcorn) silly pop-culture parody. Lots of fun! I gave a ride to a friend of a friend and I think I scared her (and maybe even scarred her, heh) with my driving. I think I'm a great driver, but apparently this is the minority opinion. (Hey, I've only been pulled over for speeding twice, in many, many years of driving.) Anyway... oh, and I bought a comic book at a store near the theater. Asterix, which is always fun but makes me wish I knew more Latin. I guess I can google the phrases that seem important.

Work last week was annoying, but Friday went surprisingly well after the earlier madness. I was surprised.

The weather here has been gorgeous lately--blue skies, perfect temperatures, light winds. (I'll qualify the 'light winds' with 'for here,' which means if you're not used to perpetually windy days, you'd think it was blowing a gale.) I may go out and take some wildflower photos in a bit, depending on how sunny it is after my grocery story run. Oh, and I didn't lose power earlier this week when we had storms pass through, so yay! (One Two of my friends at work did, twice, but only for a few seconds, just enough to require resetting all alarm clocks, etc.)

To-do list for today:
- go buy groceries (just finished the list, am double-checking ingredients after I post this)
- iron some clothes (because I'm tired of wearing the same no-iron-needed shirts, MUST HAVE CUTE CLOTHES!)
- vacuum, do load of laundry
- watch BSG (duh. Oh, it finished downloading now, yay!)
- exercise
- figure out what fics to rec for the remainder of the month for [livejournal.com profile] crack_van
- call my sister, who called me last night when I was out

I think I can officially count this as a post NOT about TV shows! Heh.

eta: You can totally tell in this post that my natural writing tendencies include rampant abuse of parentheses. Heh. Do I need a beta-reader for my everyday posts?!

I hate to admit it, but taking the time to cook dinner puts me in a better mood. (Thinking about cooking doesn't. Buying groceries doesn't. Washing dishes doesn't.) I think the brainless task of chopping stuff must force my brain to shut up after a bad day or something like that... Speaking of work, just four more days of students! Five more days of work!

Okay, so I posted these questions at [livejournal.com profile] bsg_canon and didn't get an answer:

Do we have any information about Jean Barolay's background before joining the Caprica resistance? (Do we know, for example, if she was on Anders' pyramid team?)

Do we have any knowledge about what Romo Lampkin was doing when most of the fleet was on New Caprica? Did he stay aboard a ship or go to the planet?

So if you can think of any reference from the show to answer those questions, let me know. Otherwise I'm going to assume I can make up whatever I want. Whee!

Hm, do I have anything else to say? Apparently not. Oh, here's a question--if you could force persuade me to watch any show that you currently enjoy (or have recently enjoyed), what would it be and why? (trivial or selfish motivations allowed)

Hey, another question! What icon should I create to brag about celebrate my summertime free-from-work status?
