rose_griffes: Sarah Connor and her knife (no fate)

Your main fandom of the year?
I guess I'd say Battlestar Galactica still, although that's dwindling and a couple of fandoms seem poised to knock it out of first place. BSG will probably always be my show, though.

Your favorite film you watched this year?
Wow, I haven't seen many movies this year. At this point I'd say Tangled beats both The King's Speech and The Muppets.

Your favorite book read this year?
I didn't read as much as I'd like, although I did read more than what I posted about on LJ. I just finished The Hallowed Hunt by Lois McMaster Bujold and she has lovely, clear prose and good voices for her characters. I didn't love this book as much as Paladin of Souls (both Chalion stories), but I quite liked it.

I also liked Zahrah the Windseeker, by Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu. Oh, and I read two or three Pratchett novels, and those are always delightful.

Your favorite tv show of the year?
New: Person of Interest. Returning: Parks and Recreation.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
If you like Leslie/Ben on Parks and Recreation (and I do, lots) the fanfic writers are an amazing group; such quality writing in this fandom. I've signed up to do a rec list for het_reccers.

While it wasn't a new discovery, I'm a huge admirer of the writers and actors for Parks and Recreation and what they have done with the character of Leslie Knope. (And Ben. But mostly Leslie.)

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Right now I'm still NOT OVER the idea that a significant, or at least vociferous, part of Person of Interest fandom is so unappreciative of Detective Carter, so I'm not feeling the "Yay, new fandom!" love that I want to feel. *sigh*
really, really not over it

That's probably not the kind of thing that was meant by this category, haha. Oops.

Your fiction boyfriend of the year?
Since we're going with fictional? Ben Wyatt; he's an awesome fictional boyfriend. (If I went with just looks, I'd pick Jim Caviezel. His John Reese would make a horrible boyfriend, though.)

Your fiction girlfriend of the year?
Oh, let's make it a matched set. Leslie Knope. She's awesome.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Hm. Probably the rewatch of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, because I got to appreciate how well the show worked even/especially knowing what was coming. (I'll admit, doing the fill-in recaps was a bit of a pain, but the rewatching itself was fantastic.)

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
The Hunger Games movie. Doctor Who coming back for season 7.

So I finally finished reading All Clear, by Connie Willis. my reaction; spoilers for both books )

Moving on. Wow, I really need to finish season two of Fringe and watch season three, because I keep seeing all these cut-tagged reactions on LJ and I want to read them.

Revenge this week: not quite as good as episodes 1-3, but still quite watchable. (Also, I want Emily's earrings.) Same with Prime Suspect. Have I watched Person of Interest this week? wait, I remember now... )Um. Apparently this week's episode worked on a hormonal level even if I don't remember the actual plot... Oops?
rose_griffes: Crying: acceptable under two circumstances (Ron Swanson's pyramid of awesome) (crying)

I finally started reading Blackout by Connie Willis and the very first chapter has Colin's point of view. Apparently I'm supposed to remember Colin from Doomsday Book but I didn't, so I picked up my copy of that and skimmed the last few chapters and...

...and now I'm a blubbering mess. *sobs some more* I have a cold; crying is not what I want to be doing right now! Argh, Connie Willis, you make me care too much about your characters!

Books: I started three books that I didn't finish: Blood Oranges, by Drusilla Campbell, My Most Excellent Year, by Steve Kluger and We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates. The first two just didn't click for me; the characters didn't draw me in. As for Oates' novel, well, spoilers for the basic premise (trigger warning: non-explicit mention of rape) )

So then I read two fluffy romance novels by Susan Elizabeth somebody (Johnson? Found one of the books, it was Phillips!) that had fairly likeable and distinct characters and I rather enjoyed them both.

I finished watching Wall-E. I won't hold a grudge, but... )

Moving on... Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nicole_anell's recommendation, I ended up watching the two hour introduction of AMC's The Killing. I was planning to listen to a nicely predictable murder mystery while paying bills. Instead I ended up watching with rapt interest, postponing the bill-paying for another night.

I do have one niggling problem with it. cut so you can skip this if you want just the 'Yay!' stuff )

A brief bit of YAY! stuff about 'The Killing', barely spoilery )

I got distracted from my plan to grab my season two Fringe DVDs and ended up watching the first episode of Slings & Arrows on Netflix. My opinion so far: if I loved the theatre, I'd probably enjoy it a lot more. As it is, I'm a casual fan of the theatre and have little interest in what goes on backstage unless there are characters I love who are affected by it. At some point I may watch the second episode, just to give it fair trial.

Last: Battlestar Galactica stories! We're still posting stories at [livejournal.com profile] bsg_remix and this remix of one of my comment fics has some keen perceptions about Kara as seen through Jean Barolay's eyes.

Lots of fantastic remix stories there right now! Yay, remix!

Not a remix, but there's a compelling ongoing fic, Children of Gods, a BSG/Hunger Games mash-up. BSG characters, AU background and timeline, some of the ideas from the Hunger Games... y'all know how picky I am about teenage Kara Thrace in fic. I find this version of her plausible and interesting, and the differences in her background feel organic, especially to this story. Here's the prologue. You can use the 'next entry' arrow to advance, if there's no link to the next chapter. Seven chapters up so far, a new one every week.

a bit more about 'Children of Gods,' not particularly spoilery )

Poor LJ is still having problems. Mirror of this entry here on DW.

Boo: LJ is still not sending me comment notifications in a timely fashion. Sorry if I seem to have dropped a conversation; I'm not deliberately trying to ignore anyone.

Yay: I bought some gorgeous fabric and I'm buying a dress pattern for it as soon as the next sale begins.

Boo: I hate daylight savings time.

Ah, well. On to other topics. I've watched TV and a movie and read some books. TV: Fringe! Finished season one! )

movie: Tangled )

books so far (sadly blah) )

Finished reading Brisingr last night. non-spoilery thoughts back here ) Bring on book four of the Inheritance Cycle! Except that it hasn't been published yet and there's no planned publishing date. *sigh*

Time to go find The Thief next? Possibly so.

I baked tonight. I baked yummy, yummy things: a green chili casserole (with sour cream!) and banana-apple bread. SOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOD!

There will be no New Testament post today. Mostly because we spent thirty minutes talking about these five or six words: The Gospel According to St. Matthew. (Well, I said a post once a month was my goal anyway. I hope the pace of the class picks up, because this is a bit ridiculous so far...)

So! Apparently I'm in a Young Adult book bind. At the end of 2010 I finally finished reading Eldest, which is the second book in the Eragon series. not really spoilery )

And so far in 2011 I've finished one book (that I started in 2010): Zahrah the Windseeker, by Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu. also not spoilery )
