Movies this week! Two on DVD, one at the theatre. Frequency was released in 2000. It has Dennis Quaid and Elizabeth Mitchell as the Sullivans, a firefighter (him) and a nurse (her) in the 1960s. One kid, John. (How cute was wee John? Oh my, so adorable!) trailer-related spoilers and my thoughts )

Inception was 2010's big movie. My students with good taste liked it, so I finally decided to try it. vaguely spoilery (but not really) )

I did see Brave, and it was charming and enjoyable. doesn't count as spoilery, but I'll cut anyway. )

So I'd recommend all three movies, for different reasons.

I mentioned Inception's music; for me that's one item on a list of odd things that have helped convince me to watch something. (Music from the movie kept popping up on one of my Pandora radio stations, and I really liked it, so I bumped the movie up in my Netflix queue.) Other unusual things? I started watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles after reading this crossover fanfic (Battlestar Galactica) and watching this crossover fan-made video (also Battlestar Galactica).

And speaking of (possibly?) fan-made things, Tumblr now has A Guy in a Suit--abbreviated AGIAS, if you notice that acronym showing up. He's "following" Person of Interest fans on Tumblr; their names are on a list of Irrelevants (heh). (He started following me yesterday*. Clearly I need to take some evasive measures.) I can't decide if it's done by Warner Bros. or CBS as viral marketing, or by a clever and dedicated fan. Either way, it's been hilarious to watch the changes as fans notice them and post about them. Tumblr is a very good format for building enthusiasm that way.

(Hm. Just noticed there's now a "coming soon" page now. Makes me more inclined to believe it's done by WB or CBS, not by a fan...)

*I have to admit, that was a hilarious notification from Tumblr. a-guy-in-a-suit started following you. Dun dun DUUUUUN!

I seem to have accidentally started a rewatch of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I really didn't mean to, especially considering that IT'S NOT EXACTLY COMFORTING TV, y'know? Except that it is, with its amazing cast and its focus on Sarah and its fantastic story arcs and its MUSIC, OH I MISS GOOD SOUNDTRACKS and its EVERYTHING. Anyway, off to eat some dinner and start episode five (season one), but first I should post about catching up on Fringe...

Fringe: end of season four--somehow I got four episodes behind )

Unrelated to any of the above: hey livejournal, I would renew my account (and purchase extra userpics again) if your payment page was actually secure.

Your main fandom of the year?
I guess I'd say Battlestar Galactica still, although that's dwindling and a couple of fandoms seem poised to knock it out of first place. BSG will probably always be my show, though.

Your favorite film you watched this year?
Wow, I haven't seen many movies this year. At this point I'd say Tangled beats both The King's Speech and The Muppets.

Your favorite book read this year?
I didn't read as much as I'd like, although I did read more than what I posted about on LJ. I just finished The Hallowed Hunt by Lois McMaster Bujold and she has lovely, clear prose and good voices for her characters. I didn't love this book as much as Paladin of Souls (both Chalion stories), but I quite liked it.

I also liked Zahrah the Windseeker, by Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu. Oh, and I read two or three Pratchett novels, and those are always delightful.

Your favorite tv show of the year?
New: Person of Interest. Returning: Parks and Recreation.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
If you like Leslie/Ben on Parks and Recreation (and I do, lots) the fanfic writers are an amazing group; such quality writing in this fandom. I've signed up to do a rec list for het_reccers.

While it wasn't a new discovery, I'm a huge admirer of the writers and actors for Parks and Recreation and what they have done with the character of Leslie Knope. (And Ben. But mostly Leslie.)

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Right now I'm still NOT OVER the idea that a significant, or at least vociferous, part of Person of Interest fandom is so unappreciative of Detective Carter, so I'm not feeling the "Yay, new fandom!" love that I want to feel. *sigh*
really, really not over it

That's probably not the kind of thing that was meant by this category, haha. Oops.

Your fiction boyfriend of the year?
Since we're going with fictional? Ben Wyatt; he's an awesome fictional boyfriend. (If I went with just looks, I'd pick Jim Caviezel. His John Reese would make a horrible boyfriend, though.)

Your fiction girlfriend of the year?
Oh, let's make it a matched set. Leslie Knope. She's awesome.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Hm. Probably the rewatch of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, because I got to appreciate how well the show worked even/especially knowing what was coming. (I'll admit, doing the fill-in recaps was a bit of a pain, but the rewatching itself was fantastic.)

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
The Hunger Games movie. Doctor Who coming back for season 7.

Go vote in my poll/post about episodes 2.18 and 2.19 of The Sarah Connor Chronicles! After that you should comment there and say pithy things!

Then go watch this fanvid for Up.

And after that, watch this fanvid for the Ponds (Rory!) of Doctor Who.

Then you should listen to the new album of Muppet songs sung by popular artists!

And finally, go look at the pictures taken in one boy's room while he was gone to summer camp. (The sentence "Stay out of my room!" doesn't mean a lot to his family... hee!)

Now give me money!

(Wait. Why didn't that last order work?)

I am sitting here feeling generally pleased with life. I think it's a temporary high induced by "Yay, tomorrow is Friday" plus knowing that I get to go fabric-shopping this weekend! Wooohoooo!

Yes, this has to be rationed out. Much like the urge to buy all the clothing ever (especially at the thrift store). But I'm allowed to shop when I have a plan and there are sales.

What plan, I hear you ask? (Okay, not really. But I'm going to tell you anyway.) Look at this blouse. I have been admiring brocade and sari fabrics for years, but I've never had a feasible plan for a garment that I would actually wear. I'd wear a version of this blouse, and I already have that pattern.

Also, I want to make a black skirt, and I need some lace tape to finish the red skirt that's almost done. (Again.)

As for non-sewing stuff:

1) what would happen if Three (D'Anna Biers) met Ten (the Tenth Doctor)? I am wildly curious about your opinion.

2) I love love love "Bright Morning Stars," the new album by the Wailin' Jennys. Three-part harmony by amazingly capable female vocalists!

3) Time to rewatch episode 1.04 of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. My turn to (co-)write a recap this weekend.

Rather than going to a church potluck dinner, I decided to avoid spreading my burgeoning cold tonight. Unfortunately that means I've eaten an apple, some crackers, and a handful of chocolate chips for dinner so far. I may add some string cheese to my unbalanced meal.

(This cold can't decide if it's going to get better or worse. Or possibly I'm just excessively medicated and lacking in sleep, and therefore I can't tell. So far it hasn't been too bad... and now I'm rambling.)

Too many snow days in the last three weeks has resulted in a veritable orgy of (reading, not writing) bad fanfic. I had a whole rant planned about the really annoying bits, but really, there's not much new I can say. Characters you don't like are easy to dismiss because they're hideous villains with no shades of gray! Lacking actual consent to sexual activity is fine if there's true love! Using the name of a character from existing media and creating your own, alternate characterization because it suits your story better is perfectly acceptable!

In other words, bad fanfic is all alike, whereas every good fanfic is good in its own way. (I never did like the original quote from Tolstoy about families and I'm amused to mangle it for my own purposes.)

Anyway, feel free to entertain me by commenting on my review of the pilot episode of T:TSCC. Then you can take pity on me and sign up to do your own recap of one of the unclaimed episodes. (Clearly I'm not meant to have a career as a media critic.)

Unrelated to the remainder of this post except for the science fiction TV connection:

[profile] maharet83 made banners for the SCC rewatch! They're all here. And you can still sign up to claim an episode or two to recap for us here. I'll post the recap for the pilot episode Friday, 2/11.

Okay, I'm going to talk about Battlestar Galactica for a bit. I'm sure this is shocking to all of you. Cylons, sentience and memory )

My last question: why does my brain insist on having every last detail in place before doing any actual story-writing?

And so it begins... I made a post to start the rewatch plans. We'll talk about the pilot episode next week, probably Friday! If you have an episode you would love to recap for us, use the link to make your claim in the comments there.

In completely unrelated news, via friendsfriends list I've learned that The Wailin' Jennys have a new album coming out next week and you can listen here! Yay, so exciting! (I think just the first three tracks are from the new album. But while you're there you should listen to "Arlington" and then make me a fanvid about Caprica, Gina, and Natalie to that song.)

Would anyone else be interested in doing a rewatch of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles from beginning to end? One or maybe two episodes a week? I could rewatch first and think of really obvious questions to put in a post. (Here or maybe at scchronicles_tv.)

eta: The current plan based on response so far is to watch one episode a week, except for two-part episodes. (Those will still get just one post.)

How dare [profile] chaila43 steal my totally original meme* and then use one of my favorite characters for her post! This means WAR! I'm taking Sarah Connor and not giving her back! Take that, Chaila! Neener, neener, neener!

Okay, so I was already going to post about Sarah Connor next. And I'll still post about Meg Murry at some later point, because my thoughts are still nebulous about her. It's just really fun to throw around some fake indignation once in a while.

So, Sarah Connor... and Miss Parker. Two women who really don't care what you think of them.

Miss Parker: scarier than anyone who has an actual first name )

okay, so maybe Sarah Connor is scarier than Miss Parker--but not by much )

*okay, so maybe not totally original

I feel like I should post something meaningful, but instead I'm going to post this: a Derek/Jesse (Sarah Connor Chronicles) fanvid to Simon and Garfunkel's song "America" is a brilliant idea, yes or no? why I say YES! )

No, I'm not going to learn how to vid. I'll just sit here and imagine it and psychically try and persuade someone to make it.

I never mentioned it, but I made baby brother watch several episodes of Farscape season one with me during Christmas vacation.

He's finished seasons one and two already. *laughs* In fact, he's way ahead of me now. Maybe I should finish season one this weekend.

We also watched the first three episodes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and now he has just one disk of season two left. Apparently I'm an evil influence on what he watches.

Real life stuff has been keeping me so busy this week that I haven't been online much, nor have I had much time to write or do anything else. (And yet y'all kept posting anyway!) It's not bad real-life stuff, just time-consuming (and a bit stressful). Here's my reaction to this week condensed to internet symbols:

Okay, after I post this I'm turning off the computer. Honest!

So: I'm glad to be done with another round of grading. This brings me joy, yes. Imagine me beaming, my fingers stained with red ink.

One of my classes has discovered my Kryptonite--a horrible tendency to get pop songs that I swear I don't even listen to stuck in my head. This means that they evilly reference those songs on purpose. *laughs* Kudos to them for being clever about.

I mentioned this because [livejournal.com profile] chaila43 made a fantastic fanvid for Sarah Connor using Lady Gaga's "Pokerface." *cackles maniacally* (Go ahead, try not to think about that song now!)

So how do you wake up Lady Gaga?
You poke her face.

Yes, I'm twelve.

Shall I make Christmas cards to give to my co-workers tomorrow? Or just continue to sit here like a lump? A really tired, getting over being sick lump. I was going to make fudge for them, but I'm tired and I figure that like everyone else, they're getting way too much sugar in their diets right now anyway. (Have I mentioned I'm trying to cut down on my own sugar intake? Apparently this makes me the sugar police for everyone else, too.)

Ah well. I actually have a couple of possibly amusing stories to post, so here goes.

1) I was peeking at the Sarah Connor Chronicles section at the Pit for the first time and I saw one of those stupid portmanteaux for fandom pairings: Jameron. And being the type of fan I am, I immediately wondered who would be writing a Cameron/James Ellison story?!

*laughs* (It's a John Connor/Cameron portmanteau, in case I need to clarify for any other Ellison fans.)

I miss Cameron and her crazy robot ways. *sigh*

2) vampires, religious symbols and vampire hair )

Why, why must I actually do grown-up things like balance my checkbook and pay bills? Why?! And why didn't I do this last night? I want to work on fic, but I'm not allowing myself to touch the fic notebook until I'm done. *grumps* Nor can I watch more Doctor Who. Off-limits, I say!

Speaking of TV I need to watch, in case you procrastinated on buying the complete Farscape series when deepdiscountdvd.com had such a great price, you're in luck for a few more hours. Amazon.com has it for $57.99. I already have it from the first offer, so... too bad. Such is life.

I'm behind on reading fanfic as well as writing it. But I do have a few recs.

Everyone who likes stories for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has probably already seen this, but [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift has an excellent series, Out on the Wire. It works well as a possibility of how season three could have been.

Battlestar Galactica/Firefly crossover: Through the Looking Glass, by [livejournal.com profile] karate0kat. Goes with the idea that the Demetrius got stranded and eventually encountered Mal and his crew. Some Kara/Sam content, lots of the Firefly team. I haven't left feedback there yet. Ooops.

More BSG bigbang stories: [livejournal.com profile] merrykk's Meet Your Storm is an AU for season three, post-New Caprica. What if Kacey really were a hybrid, and Kara's daughter? Some Kara/Sam content, lots of minor characters making guest appearances.

I've only read part of [livejournal.com profile] lizardbeth_j's next section of her "Not All That We Are" series, The Thread of Ariadne, but it's awesome, as always, and I can't wait to finish. Though it's killing my Kara/Sam-loving heart! Oh, the angst! (You really will need to read the previous parts; it starts here. Kara, Sam, cylons galore...

I already mentioned [livejournal.com profile] lls_mutant's story The Space Between Us, but I thought I'd reiterate that it's worth the time to read. Hoshi/Gaeta, Two/Eight (and baby, yaaaaaaayyyyy!), nearly everyone else who has ever been on the show. Works well as an alternative for season 4.5.

Not a bigbang fic, but [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 wrote a beautiful, creepy crossover story: Blessed Be The Fruit, which mixes BSG and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.

Not a fic rec, but [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda has her Movies in Fifteen Minutes recap of New Moon, if you want a good giggle.

In addition to finishing/leaving feedback on some of these stories, [livejournal.com profile] merrykk and [livejournal.com profile] lyssie both have stories I haven't started yet. And I'm pretty sure I'm missing another rec I meant to make. *sigh*

Okay. Off to pay bills, balance the checkbook and NOT watch Doctor Who.

As soon as I started watching episode 2.09 of The Sarah Connor Chronicles and saw Sarah's dress, I thought of this painting by Andrew Wyeth. It's not as close a match as I thought (different sleeves), but still...
Who me, stay up way too late to watch more show? Hah.

Okay, so maybe I do need a Sarah Connor userpic.
