not really sick, just whiny

Rather than going to a church potluck dinner, I decided to avoid spreading my burgeoning cold tonight. Unfortunately that means I've eaten an apple, some crackers, and a handful of chocolate chips for dinner so far. I may add some string cheese to my unbalanced meal.

(This cold can't decide if it's going to get better or worse. Or possibly I'm just excessively medicated and lacking in sleep, and therefore I can't tell. So far it hasn't been too bad... and now I'm rambling.)

Too many snow days in the last three weeks has resulted in a veritable orgy of (reading, not writing) bad fanfic. I had a whole rant planned about the really annoying bits, but really, there's not much new I can say. Characters you don't like are easy to dismiss because they're hideous villains with no shades of gray! Lacking actual consent to sexual activity is fine if there's true love! Using the name of a character from existing media and creating your own, alternate characterization because it suits your story better is perfectly acceptable!

In other words, bad fanfic is all alike, whereas every good fanfic is good in its own way. (I never did like the original quote from Tolstoy about families and I'm amused to mangle it for my own purposes.)

Anyway, feel free to entertain me by commenting on my review of the pilot episode of T:TSCC. Then you can take pity on me and sign up to do your own recap of one of the unclaimed episodes. (Clearly I'm not meant to have a career as a media critic.)

Ahahaha, bored minds think alike! Though for me it's not quite as bad as late last year when I got nostalgic over a show I watched when I was younger, until I discovered it was really the worst thing ever! Yay, perspective!

Feel better!
Nicely appropriated! (Though me and that Tolstoy quote haven't been introduced) There does seem to be an unfortunate amount of the same patterns, yes. :(

From Anna Karenina (the first line, apparently?): Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

Meh to that! Though I think Tolstoy and I may both be overstating things. :)

As for the badfic, I should have known better. I've stumbled across these problems before when reading multi-chapter Kara/Lee fics. So now I'm back to reading those only when I know the author or when there's a good recommendation.
Related to this, reading some of the comments on K/L epics is a bad idea as well.

*laughs* Yeah, I know that feeling...

It's sad but true, isn't it. It's true for me with books in RL too. I guess I've grown jaded?

Bad book experiences lately? That's frustrating. I'm taking forever to finish the third Eragon book, and I do have a list of books to try after that...

At least in books you can't read other people's comments about how the author should hurry up and kill off the character they don't like. :((((

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I haven't had bad book experiences. I don't read many books to have any experiences, honestly. I've narrowed down what I will read to select few. So the experience is usually good or at worse, expected. But no, not bad.

Granted, I did read two new authors last year and they were okay. Never Let Me Go (But I'd seen the movie and a friend mailed me the book. Not a lot of risk there.) and Dust, the novel about a young female zombie which wasn't great but wasn't bad for a first novel.

I kind of love that you read K/L fic, btw. :-) Especially since I don't read it much anymore unless I have loads of time and know the author.

Well, my attempts to read K/L fic during the snow days went sadly awry. I'm still reading [livejournal.com profile] taragel's Ice Pilots story, and that's it for multi-chapter stuff. (There don't seem to be many one-shot fics for K/L--at least not one-shots that work for me...)

So interesting that you and I are in the same place about K/L fic. I think I'm so old-school at this point. I really want fic that takes place in seasons 1-2 or just short AU fics. Hard to find, hard to find. And then when I do find a few, I have so little time to read them!

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I... hm. I'm not sure what I think about recent K/L one-shots, other than "That doesn't work for me." I will say that I think Lee was happy in the finale, so I don't really need post-finale fics with him pining forever. (He needs to go have babies with Sonja! Or Paulla! Or almost anyone, because even though he'll always love Kara and he'll miss her, I firmly believe he can move on.)

Wow, I had more to say about that than I thought, heh.

I don't feel a need to focus on earlier stuff, but season four wasn't particularly fertile territory for K/L stuff, so... I guess that means I'd rather read fic set earlier as well?

As for AU, you know me: sometimes AU works great (for me as a reader), sometimes I'm not interested at all.

I've read some intriguing fics with Lee and Sonja. Mostly because I'm curious about anything that happened with Sonja. As for Lee moving on in any real way from Kara, I can't imagine it. I haven't really moved on from her (I cried watching my little vidlet of her not two weeks ago) so how could he possibly? It's only been a few years.

Maybe Sonja could move on with one of the Twos! Now those blonde babies I would root for. They would be adorable!

I read this great fic once that had Lee moving on (this fic was written in season 2006) on Earth. One of the lines were:

If he lives to be forty, he'll still feel this. If he lives to see Earth, if he lives to have a real home, a real job, even a real family and not one with her, he'll still feel exactly this way. He can imagine himself so clearly, tying a necktie in the bathroom mirror, noticing the graying hairs at his temple, hearing his children play and fight in the living room, and thinking only Kara. The desire will never leave him. He wishes he had the strength to deny how strongly it lives in him, but it took everything he had to deny acting on it. He knew, too soon after they met, that he would die loving her.

I believe he could move on but who could ever forget Kara?

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we agree that he'll never forget her, but since she was never really his, I believe he'd be able to move on.

As for potential Lee pairings, I'm more partial to Paulla than Sonja. Not that Sonja isn't interesting, but I think Paulla would make sure Lee was really there and committed. Or she would shoot him. Oh wait, they took away the guns.

Maybe Sonja could move on with one of the Twos! Now those blonde babies I would root for. They would be adorable!

If I had an interest in writing AU, I would definitely go for that. But since cylon-cylon combinations can't make babies... Though Sonja and a Two could live happily ever after without babies. Except wait, she's a Six.

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
but since she was never really his, I believe he'd be able to move on.
Depends on what you mean by 'his'. :-) Sometimes things with love don't work out. Some people can move on from that. Others can't. Lee seems like someone who holds on. I believe he could physically and mentally move on. He could do that. But in his heart, even though he and Kara had so little time, I think she'd always be there. Always.

Paulla and Lee? I don't see why she'd be interested in him, really. And I can't even imagine their discussions about God! They seem pretty opposite but since I knows so little about Paulla, who knows?

But since cylon-cylon combinations can't make babies...
The show did such a poor, poor job explaining why that couldn't work to me that I think I don't believe it. Caprica did get pregnant. Maybe Cylons can't have babies but it can't be because Tigh didn't love Caprica enough. That's so . . . I just can't believe it. So to me, that point is wide open. :-)

Hey, Sixes can live happily ever after. Look at Caprica and Gaius walking into the sunset. Oh, wait. Lion. I guess you are right. :-( Poor Sixes. Only in AU worlds, I guess!

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Paulla and Lee? I don't see why she'd be interested in him, really. And I can't even imagine their discussions about God! They seem pretty opposite but since I knows so little about Paulla, who knows?

Well, let me tell you how they get together! ;-) They end up the de facto leaders of the largest of the settlements: Paulla because she's good at policing people and Lee because he has the people skills Paulla lacks. (Plus they both had leadership roles in the fleet before getting to Earth II.) Lee sticks around for 3-4 months until he remembers that he was going to climb mountains, plus he secretly wants to find his dad. So he goes hiking and has a great time but misses the settlement.

When he gets back he and Paulla gradually appreciate each other on a more personal level, not just as a co-leaders. And eventually Lee's pretty blue eyes win Paulla over and she informs him that they should have beautiful, annoying children together.

Or something like that. Hee!

(Lee and Kara wouldn't have agreed about religion either.)

As for the Sixes, I was thinking more in terms of how the Sixes probably all want children and if she couldn't have them with a Two... but who knows? Maybe Sonja wouldn't want kids? Maybe there's another fluke like with Caprica and Tigh, but this time it works out okay for the baby?

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
and she informs him that they should have beautiful, annoying children together.
Heehee. It does have a certain charm when you tell it, Rose!

(Nope. But Kara wasn't smiting people with the power of God's love, either. I mean, wow.)

Maybe there's another fluke like with Caprica and Tigh, but this time it works out okay for the baby?
Yay! I mean, yes, that's exactly what happens!! The Sixes deserve babies if they want them. That's why I always give Caprica lots with Gaius before the lion. Yep. :-D
