I added a second chapter to the Brasso fic. Post-season one finale, Brasso and those few others from Ferrix on their way to Gangi Moon. Thanks to [personal profile] yourlibrarian for helping me rephrase a few things.

After (1908 words) by rose_griffes
Chapters: 2/2
Fandom: Andor (TV), Star Wars - All Media Types

Additional Tags: post-episode, Grief/Mourning
Summary: Brasso has always hated leaving atmo.

For the moment I'm not working on any new fic for Andor. Feel free to leave a prompt if you think of an idea to request. I may try some drabbles or 3-sentence fics; those are always fun. I don't want to stop writing for this show yet!

Different fandom beta request: if you know The Man from UNCLE (2015 film) and are willing to look over a short (less than 2000 words so far) fic about Gaby Teller, let me know.

TMFU exchange reveals: I wrote Waverly fic, and it's still in progress, although the stopping point isn't exactly a dramatic cliffhanger. So frustrating when writing inspiration doesn't cooperate with, er, deadlines and so forth.

Merry Christmas! This has been such a weird year that, like many others, I'm rejoicing in the signs of it coming to an end. But also: Christmas is, I hope, a lovely time of year for you, if it's something you honor. Here's a post I wrote more than ten years ago about Christ and the Christmas story.

Update for this year: roommate R moved out a couple of months ago. And, in some wonderful news, her youngest child got the hoped-for organ transplant, so R is spending Christmas helping her daughter recuperate.

Roommate H, who lived here before roommate R, has moved back in. It's a bit more complicated than just "revolving door situation", but given that we're mid-pandemic, we're both pleased to have someone around on a Christmas day that doesn't allow for the usual travel to see more distant friends and family.

Anyway. A gift I received - fanfic! Sweet and introspective.
Night Watch (1396 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Illya Kuryakin, Gaby Teller
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Mission Fic, Slight pining, Character Study
Summary:

Gaby and Illya take tonight's stake out shift. It's only been a few weeks into their partnership, and Gaby has questions for Illya as she adjusts.

I wrote something as well. Feel free to guess what and I'll write you a ficlet if you guess right. Possibly even if you guess wrong. I'm not giving any hints; there are only 18 works posted in the Man from UNCLE exchange this year, so it's not that much to go through, if you're the determined sort.

Hardly any time to spare, so: 1) Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it!

2) I received a gift of fanfic. The warnings are at the link, but it's rated M for a reason.

This is Moscow Speaking (3416 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Illya Kuryakin/Gaby Teller
Characters: Gaby Teller, Illya Kuryakin, Napoleon Solo
Summary: Political and philosophical differences can be hell on a relationship, especially when there's an Iron Curtain in the mix. Gaby stews over what Illya has been doing for the KGB and things come to ahead between them.

It's what I asked for! Gaby x Illya with some reflections on the obstacles that could make a relationship difficult. Two years that I've done this fic exchange, and two years of GLORIOUS GABY in the center of my gift-fic, which makes me so happy.

I shouldn't have started looking at my tumblr reblogs for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. this close to bedtime, but here we are. So:

1) I like this behind-the-scenes glimpse at the score for the movie.

2) Tumblr-ite canardroublard has an incredibly detailed reblog about how Illya Kuryakin is not clueless when it comes to men's fashion. That's one of those fannish beliefs that got passed around: the idea that Kuryakin is good with women's fashion--witness the flattering mod clothes he chose for Gaby--but he's hopelessly outmatched when it comes to men's fashion. Given what the reblog says, it's more about how our views on men's fashion have changed; Illya dressed in trendy clothes for men in the early 60s, but Harrington jackets and turtlenecks don't scream "mod" anymore, unlike Gaby's color-blocked mini-shift dresses.

(Canardroublard goes on to explain that Solo's fashion sense is much more about enduring style than fleeting fashion: he picked Chanel-inspired women's suits for Gaby, and wears well-fitting* men's suits with small nods to then-current trends with his understated plaid.)

*Seriously, all the awards to whoever fitted that blue plaid suit to Henry Cavill's tush.

3) When I had the fourth chapter of Birthday Girl finished, I made a moodboard to go with it:
a small moodboard of four pictures of young Gaby Teller
(click on the image to see a larger version)
With her childhood in Germany, she would almost certainly have had a birthday wreath used on her birthday; it's a wooden candle-holder that goes up to age 10 or 12. The chocolates are a reference to a specific moment in the story. The young ballet dancers reflect Gaby's canon ballet experience; and finally, the young girl in the top left picture is meant to represent young Gaby. I chose a photo of actress Natalie Wood; she was born the same year as fictional Gaby, and we have lots of images of her as a child actress in the US.

(This is one of the stories that I would like to continue; I have more ideas for birthday-centered vignettes. Too bad I'm not feeling the writing inspiration... no new material makes it hard to keep a fannish focus on something.

4) A photo found on tumblr of Armie Hammer in character and costume as Illya Kuryakin:
actor Armie Hammer in character as Illya Kuryakin from a 2015 film
(thumbnail again, click for large version)
The repressed hair! Very important. (For real, though: Armie Hammer has gorgeous, bouncy, fluffy hair in real life. I can only guess at the industrial-strength hair gel they used for him during this film.)

Finished fic! (Not by me.) It's more than a novel! It's basically the equivalent of an action- and romance-centered second and third movie for The Man from U.N.C.L.E., with Gaby and Illya (and a baby--not theirs) getting the main focus.

I haven't had a paid dreamwidth account in a very long time. But apparently at some point I did, given the inactive icons I have uploaded. And now I'm tempted to do that again, because OBVIOUSLY I need some userpics for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. And other, more current fannish loves. (Finn from Star Wars! Baby vampire Amy from The Passage! And so many more!)

In the meantime, here's the fic I've written since The Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic exchange in December.

Relationships: Illya Kuryakin/Gaby Teller

Summary: A sort of New Year's celebration...

FUNdamentals (1119 words) by rose_griffes
Chapters: 1/2
Fandom: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Illya Kuryakin/Gaby Teller, Illya Kuryakin & Napoleon Solo & Gaby Teller
Characters: Gaby Teller, Illya Kuryakin, Napoleon Solo
Additional Tags: Unrequited Crush, Mutual Pining, Cooking
Series: Part 2 of 5 times Gaby and Illya surprised each other - and one time Solo surprised them both
Summary: A continuation from a prompt: Gaby or Illya surprising each other.

Yep, still doing the hyper-focus on that one film.

But other things are good as well. The Passage may or may not be one of those things, but it's super enjoyable, and the momentum has really built in the last few episodes. Next week is a two-hour season finale, so this would be a good time to start watching: in time to see the finale with the live audience. (Or the next day. Which is what I do, on hulu.)

Happy New Year!

Author names for the Man from U.N.C.L.E. holiday fic exchange are visible now, so: I wrote Grounded. (AKA the story with Gardener Gaby.)

My recipient misura’s first request mentioned her enjoyment of Gaby’s dance scene in the film; she wanted more of Gaby outmatching Illya and/or charming him. In a separate prompt she talked about protectiveness within the team

So I wrote constantly concerned Illya who is charmed by Gaby’s gardening abilities. This allowed me to throw in a new headcanon about Gaby’s childhood: that she learned to garden from her foster family.

Things I perceive as clues that it was my story:

  • lots of Gaby, including a mention of Gaby’s childhood
  • I included a research note at the end
  • excessive use of the word ‘soft’ when besotted Illya is staring at Gaby
  • repressed Gaby x Illya feelings
  • probably more stuff that I’m totally unaware of in my own writing

Fun fact: the story was supposed to be a short and easy five times fic (five times Gaby and Illya surprised each other, and one time Solo surprised them both), but the first section never stopped growing. To the point of “I’m still writing this two days before it’s due?!”

Other fun fact: as soon as you post your first draft to AO3, that’s the date listed on the story, even though it doesn’t get revealed until later. Going back and looking at dates for works submitted, I concluded that the creator of this challenge, @deducitetemporacarmen, must have had some sleepless nights, worrying about the many people who didn’t submit a draft until well after the official deadline for it.

Final fun fact: that was my first time to write Illya’s POV.

An anonymous commenter on Tumblr guessed my story correctly, so they win a ficlet. Which is turning into something slightly longer, so Anonymous may have to wait for a finished product.

Merry Christmas, y'all! I think I'll do a few recipe links for what we're eating today...
food! )
I got presents! A few lovely things that are currently in the guest bedroom at my parents', and also an online gift:

Title: The Woman from U.N.C.L.E.

Relationships: Gaby Teller & Alexander Waverly, Illya Kuryakin & Napoleon Solo & Gaby Teller, Illya Kuryakin/Gaby Teller, heavily implied - Relationship
Characters: Gaby Teller, Napoleon Solo, Illya Kuryakin, Alexander Waverly
Summary: A fic about Alexander Waverly and his favorite agent, Gaby Teller.

So yes, the Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic exchange is live. :) Currently works are posted anonymously; reveals in a week. Guess correctly which one I wrote, and win a ficlet. It feels like my fingerprints are ALL OVER the fic I wrote, but we’ll see.

(My free time for reading will be... variable, but I’m hoping to make some guesses as well, before the reveals are made.)

I finally got around to removing some of you from my livejournal reading list. I do still check my LJ reading page from time to time; it was getting a bit annoying, seeing the same post twice. So. I think I have everyone I followed there on my reading circle here--well, everyone who migrated over here at some point--as well as some newer people to follow.

Having updated my reading page here and found new people to follow, now it's time for me to ignore y'all for a few days and finish my Man from U.N.C.L.E. gift exchange fanfic. I think I'm going to use the leechblock extension and block both tumblr and dreamwidth until I'm done. Or at least done enough; I need to have a solid draft posted by the 15th. I can still fiddle with it until Dec. 25.

If I'm new to you (hi, new followers!): I watched The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015 movie, not the old TV series) on a plane this summer and fell in fannish love with Gaby Teller, and with Gaby x Illya Kuryakin. Which led to writing fanfic for the first time in years. So you'll see me post about that from time to time, until the next fannish obsession comes along.

I am doing other things besides worrying about political events over which I have no control.

Chapter two (of two--it's done) of One Town Is Very Like Another, a semi-sappy Gaby Teller x Illya Kuryakin fanfic.

Chapter four of Birthday Girl, my Gaby Teller traumatic childhood genfic.

I signed up for a Man from U.N.C.L.E. fanfic exchange. It will be my first fic exchange in, uh, five years? So yay for that; it's fun (and weird) to be writing fanfic again.
