Season two of The Witcher spoilers! )

Roommate F has a Disney+ subscription, so I watched the first episode of Hawkeye. The first word I would choose for episode one is "awkward". Getting all of the pieces in place resulted in a pilot episode with many weird coincidences. But I did enjoy it. Hopefully it will improve as I continue the season. I do like Hailee Steinfeld, which is a plus for the show. The actress who plays her mother was interesting as well. Hopefully she'll have plenty of agency within the story, since she was prominent in the pilot.

Netflix has released a second season of Cheer and I've already devoured two episodes. They're very compelling; kudos to the editors. But also, they've tapped into a rather ideal human interest story: the stakes are high at a personal level, but at a world event level? Inconsequential.

Another enjoyable real-person show on Netflix: School of Chocolate, which is led by Amaury Guichon, who makes those viral videos of mind-blowing sculptures made of chocolate. I like the softness of it: no one is kicked off the show from week to week. Instead, contestants who show less skill in a challenge are given two-on-one lessons with Guichon while the other contestants do a team challenge.

TMFU exchange reveals: I wrote Waverly fic, and it's still in progress, although the stopping point isn't exactly a dramatic cliffhanger. So frustrating when writing inspiration doesn't cooperate with, er, deadlines and so forth.

[personal profile] bookshop has a very detailed timeline of the ongoing battle at the Romance Writers of America. I haven't finished reading, but there are more details here (with documentation) than I've seen in mainstream reports, which gloss over the starting point(s).

I have now watched season one of The Witcher twice. It is a delight. This person's look at the genre gets it (I'm skipping the slightly spoilery bits):
What I’ve come to appreciate about The Witcher is just how gleefully committed it is to being Big Fantasy.

There’s more troubled monarchies in need of rescuing than you can toss a coin at. There’s people in complex face prosthetics, and there’s CGI landscapes mixed with beautiful locations. There’s costumes, swords, and magic magic magic. But that’s only the start–there’s also an internal, metatexual history being written in the story as decades pass and Geralt affects world events. And how is this expressed?

IN SONG!
[...]
There’s something just deliciously fun about a live action fantasy series that embraces the drama, the absurdity, and the splendid zeal of the genre. If The Lord of the Rings made our hearts grow and Game of Thrones made our minds race… perhaps The Witcher, at last, can set us free to revel.

I've been thinking that there's something very like Buffy the Vampire Slayer in The Witcher: the commitment to the sheer silliness of its premise, the gleeful stripping of myths for their parts while still trying to honor why we loved those stories, the beating heart of humanity expressed through super-powered tortured leads who don't really believe in their own humanity anymore... IT IS FUN.

Now, what to do with current hyperfixation? Also, what about mini-fixation impulse to write Star Wars post-film fic? How to balance that with the desire to continue Gaby backstory fic for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. ?

Also, there's work. I have work tomorrow. Yeah, time to turn off the computer and focus on that.

me: I mean, The Witcher does have its flaws.
co-worker who is also watching: *nods*
me: Like, they should have spent more time on Yennefer's backstory, when she was learning at evil Hogwarts.
co-worker: Yeah. But also...
me: ?
co-worker: I was promised shirtless Henry Cavill! His shirt hasn't been off nearly enough!
me: ...fair.

So, I’ve already mentioned this, but the strong and silent type really does work for me in fiction, huh. I finished season one of The Witcher (and started over again) and I am thoroughly charmed. Also, here be spoilers. )

My favorite non-spoilery promo for the show: first of all, to watch the witcher you need to replace your expectation of “good” with “totally unhinged.”
the show is about henry cavill in extremely tight clothing, carrying around a broadsword, facing moral dilemmas, fighting monsters, and having sex. he takes a potion before every fight (which isn’t explained) and no one in the story ages (which also isn’t explained) so people’s parents and grandparents look the same age as their progeny.
(It goes on in that vein. I think it's more negative than I would be, even if I were being starkly realistic about the show's flaws. But... we do tend to color our favorite media with the positive glow of our appreciation, so you can read that as an antidote to my current love-fest.)

P.S. THE SHOW GETS ITS OWN TAG! BECAUSE I HAVE NO DOUBT I'LL BE TALKING MORE ABOUT IT!

John Reese (Person of Interest) = the titular male lead on The Mandalorian = Geralt the Witcher. Discuss.

this explains a lot )

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. fanfic exchange has now gone to the "reveal authors" stage. So here's what I wrote:

Pines (3889 words) by rose_griffes
Chapters: 3/3
Fandom: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Illya Kuryakin/Gaby Teller, Illya Kuryakin & Napoleon Solo & Gaby Teller
Characters: Gaby Teller, Napoleon Solo, Illya Kuryakin
Additional Tags: entirely made up medical stuff, medical trauma offscreen, Injury Recovery
Summary: a hospital stay after a mission misstep

I'm trying to tally up what fic I've written as gifts; it looks this is my fourth "official" exchange (that isn't a remix).

TV try-outs from yesterday: I watched the pilot episode of Prodigal Son and it wasn't for me. I think I'm just done with procedurals that put their narrative focus on serial killers. Also I kept giggling at the very obvious beats of what was going to happen and my friend who was watching with me was slightly annoyed. Oops I also watched the pilot episode of Perfect Harmony, and hoooboy it was clunky. Cheesy, but not in a fun way.

So then I watched three episodes in a row of The Witcher. It's rated MA for a reason; apparently the setting of faux-medieval Europe requires BOOBS. Also, gory battle scenes, and a gory body transformation. By that point in the evening I was watching by myself on my laptop, and that was a good thing; I was able to open another tab and focus on something else for a few minutes when needed.

I--I like Henry Cavill in this. Much to my surprise. Not that I've disliked him before; I've barely seen his films. (Baby Henry Cavill in The Count of Monte Cristo, and then his role as Napoleon Solo in The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) I think what catches me off-guard is that Geralt the witcher is, well, decent to women so far. And I wasn't sure if that would be the case. Same with his role in TMFU; Solo was written as a womanizer, but he's actually decent to women. Don't get me wrong; it's a minimal standard. But so often mainstream media just loves to double down on the misogyny. Especially when they can try to justify it as "historically accurate".

Anyway, Henry Cavill being quietly disgruntled is apparently ~my aesthetic~ or something. Hee! But also! I LOVE YENNEFER BUT SHE IS ALSO TERRIFYING. And there are so many other women! Important women! People are probably expecting massive monster battles--which the show gives--but then there are also so many female characters doing important things! It's just--pleasantly--not what I expected. Hooray.
