Fannish update

For a summer that wasn't going to include much travel, I sure did travel a lot. June: four days of camping, then two weeks of travel, including Niagara Falls, Quebec City and Pennsylvania. July: a week-long teaching conference (within my state, but at a touristy destination), visits with the family and an old high school friend... I haven't been home much (er, where I live now, I mean). Now that August is here, I'm busy planning school stuff. I have a two-day presentation to prepare for, a brief break, then back to the grind of teacher inservices (taught by other people) before students finally come back.

Where did my time go? Oh yeah, to traveling. Heh. No wonder I haven't added much to my 2009 book list.

Anyway, here's an update on fannish things (aka movies/TV and writing/reading related to it) (spoilers for the trailer for BSG's 'The Plan'):

I liked the new Star Trek movie. Spock was my favorite character in the film. But I feel soooo much fannish love for Uhura, it's a bit embarrassing. Fandom is great! There are fabulous essays about her and awesome stories... and best of all, it's highly doubtful any of what I've enjoyed will be contradicted in future movies. She was a vital character, but not a main one.

Having acquired season two of Pushing Daisies, I've been reminded how much that show appealed to me. I have one more episode to watch before finishing. (I'm just watching the three episodes that aired in May or June right now--I never did see them on TV.) Then I can see all the extras on the DVD's too. Oh, poor show.

I still haven't caught up on Life's second season--I believe I have five unwatched episodes. And again, poor show. I don't think it was in the same range of quality as PD, but it was a good cop show for people who like characters rather than just the mystery of the week.

I want to write Angie/Vaughan fic for Ultraviolet. I haven't sent the disk back to netflix yet. I think I'll try rewatching episodes 4-6 right before the boring meetings start later this month; then maybe I'll get a story out of it. (Which only one of you will read, but that's okay! I want Angie/Vaughan fic, and that's all there is to it!)

Doctor Who is my slow-to-continue show, but I'm not abandoning it. I'm still in the season with Martha--just saw the two episodes with the Daleks. To no one's surprise, I like Martha a lot.

As for Battlestar Galactica, I think I still have a few stories left to write. Oh, and I'm ridiculously excited about 'The Plan,' even though it will be full of annoying retcons. More Sammy! Caprica (the planet) pre- and post-armaggedon! Another brunette Six! Yay!

I haven't bought any DVD's for season four--neither 4.0 nor 4.5 or whatever the terms may be. I have all of the episodes paid for and downloaded through Amazon's Unbox service, and I can't quite convince myself to pay for them again. Possibly if they put them into one DVD set... and drop the price... and if I need the space on my computer...

Ah, I have to get off the computer and go to another doctor's appointment. That's the other thing I've done this summer--cram in any/all doctor visits. I've had my eyes checked, blood tests done, various body parts poked at and so forth. Fun times. *whimpers*

I'm onto season four of Doctor Who, but Martha might be my favorite companion even though season three wasn't my favorite season. It's strange, but she's awesome! I just love a smart woman.

I can see why they keep giving the Doctor companions--their enthusiasm gets to mirror my own for space travel.

And yes, Martha is great even when season three isn't...

I watched an ep with Martha and... she just didn't click with me. I don't know. Maybe I can't watch Who without Rose? I have no idea. I enjoy Donna. But maybe I just don't like the Doc so much without Rose... Ten and I have a complicated relationship. Hee.

I don't think the actress who plays Martha (who was great in the season 2 finale) is quite as skilled as the rest of the cast, nor is the writing strong enough to make up for her performance. Like so many shows, really excellent acting can make up for the bad writing in so many ways (yes, BSG, I'm looking at you), and I don't think the actress who plays Martha can pull it off.

*sigh* I get that. Since I either have to deal with Ten or stop watching, I deal. Rose was originally written as a foil for Nine, so I think Martha actually works better as a foil for Ten. Sometimes with Rose and Ten I worried that all that giddy energy was going to bounce out of my TV screen. (Okay, not really, but hopefully you see what I mean.)

Lyssie's reaction to Martha: "She's hot! And thinks! And has a tattoo!"

And is awesome. Despite me not having a Martha icon. Woe.

The PLaaaaaaaaaaaaaan. I am excited for exactly the reasons you are.

She's smart and not a pushover! I like her!

I only have two icon slots left right now... and I haven't found a Martha icon I like yet. (I finally had to make my own Mickey icon; I gave up in exasperation. Not that this icon is super, but at least it's Mickey and NO ONE ELSE. All I could find when I looked was Mickey plus someone else. And there were hardly any of these, either.)

The Plan! Wheee!
