Entry tags:
last books for July 2010; also Doctor Who
I'm typing this entry directly into livejournal, instead of in notepad like I usually do. Why? Because this is supposed to be a short break from cleaning. I've already done a beading break (a friend came over and finished making a necklace while I made earrings to go with a necklace I made last year), and it's time to do more organizing!
So, the last three books I read in July were:
The Passage by Justin Cronin
The Hunger Games and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
I can see why so many people are fascinated with Collins' dystopian world. It was an intense read. I went ahead and pre-ordered the third book, because I don't want to have to wait to borrow it from a student/get it from the library. (Also, I had an Amazon.com gift certificate. Yay!)
As for Cronin's book, wow. Sort of like Stephen King's The Stand, only more compelling. A virus that causes something resembling vampirism in the victims that survive, which leads to widespread destruction across the US; there are characters with special destinies and a bit of a mystical element. Cool ideas already, plus add in that Cronin has a writing style that I appreciate as a reader. I didn't skim! I'm bad about skimming books at times, and this was interesting enough and well-written, so I didn't. Oh, and Cronin really made me care about the many, many characters he introduced. Very entertaining. I need to go see Em and lend her my copy; she just had surgery today and is stuck at home recuperating for a few days.
I started reading Eragon but haven't had time to finish yet.
Also, I did watch the finale of season five of new Doctor Who this past weekend--I enjoyed it so much. Plastic Rory the Centurion! Hail Caesar! River Song as Cleopatra! (That was utterly fantastic, by the way.)
Madman with a box indeed. Pandorica, the magic box meant to contain the madman.
Mostly I'm just very pleased. Season five is a pretty happy place for me as a whole, unlike seasons three and four when Martha and Donna were awesome and Ten wasn't. I never hated Ten--hated a few of his choices, but not him--but I'm glad to like the Doctor again. Oh, and space family! For real, there's a space family! And Rory is the Mom, since Eleven is the Dad, except for how that's... kinda creepy when you add Amy in, sorry.
So far I'm connecting most with Rory; something about the caretaker characters attracts me: Martha, Rory, James Ellison, Jarod.
I may have more thoughts after rewatching. Which I will NOT do today, since I'm about to go clean some more.
SEND ME LINKS TO THE GOOD FIC AND VIDS! It's odd to be liking something that so many other people like as well. Before this season, I mostly read Martha fic, and it's not like I'm being bombarded with Martha stories, y'know? But now I'm overwhelmed, so feel free to link me to the stuff you liked, s'il vous plait.
