a hodge-podge of links and TV thoughts

Person of Interest gets a new episode this week. Finally. In the meantime, here's an article about what Jim Caviezel does for fitness. What really struck me wasn't the exercise and health routine, it was that he views an eight-hour day as being a half-day of work... because a full day can run fifteen to nineteen hours on set. Aie. Can't imagine that.

I'm still watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. Episode 3.08 featured Hama, an awesome creepy old lady who reminds me of Tom Zarek. Though that might be [livejournal.com profile] lls_mutant's fault, since she compared another AtLA character to Tom Zarek, so the thought was already lurking. At any rate, that was a fantastic episode, and I'd love to see more of Hama and/or more about bloodbending, but I have a sneaking suspicion I'm supposed to view it as automatically off-limits, and I sort of... don't. Sorry, show. Which might be my own inner Tom Zarek coming out, with the 'any means to an end' idea drifting around.

Also still watching The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, and it's lots of fun. And I'm trying to catch up on Fringe's last episodes. I have four more before it's done forever.

Two (more) quick vid links and I'm declaring this to be an official post. First, Festivids is still anonymous for... I don't know how much longer. I really liked this vid for Grapes of Wrath. It's centered around Ma Joad. (I've watched a few others, liked them well enough to comment, and entirely forgot to bookmark them.)

Finally, French Toast is an animated short film that I stumbled across a few days ago. It was nominated for an Oscar in 2010. Six minutes of action, and it includes a problem, a mystery, shooting, and, well, stuff. A nice and quick diversion of a film.

Back to work stuff now. *disappears*

HAHA! I feel so nefarious! (Should I be alarmed that so many people associate me with Tom Zarek?)

Hama is definitely Zarek-ish, too- I agree! I didn't think of it because Jet was my Zarek!character, but she definitely is, too. And I agree- that is suck a creepy, amazing episode. I've been told bloodbending is a much bigger part of Korra, btw.

I don't know, should you?! (heeee)
oh, I got rid of my Zarek userpic when PoI ate my brain? sad day now

I'm not sure how much interest I have in Korra. I might try it when I finish AtLA, but there are other shows that will probably be given a chance before Korra.

Yeah, sets are rough! Actors are supposed to be on set only 12 hours (at least, after 12 they have to be paid more) but that doesn't include hair/makeup/wardrobe, the putting on and the taking off! Men have less time in the makeup chair, though, so it's easier on them than women. But they ARE guaranteed 12 hours between when they leave the makeup chair and when they have to be back, so it's not actually a fifteen-hour day on a 24-hour schedule (which means when your set is "turning on" a woman, ie you have the same actress in the last scene of one day and the first scene of the next, then the crew typically gets an little more time off than if you're turning on a man or not turning on anyone. But do that too much, and it means by Friday, you're starting at 1 or 2pm, which means no ones getting out until basically Saturday morning....scheduling a shoot is a fine art!! Thats not even talking about managing locations or scenes that have to be done at night! I'm in awe of the people who can juggle all that well.)

It sounds completely chaotic. Aie.

And actors like Caviezel and Henson (userpic) have a big obligation to maintain a certain physicality, which uses more of what's left of their time when shows are in active production. I can't even imagine. (And the set people! Who don't get to sit around in their labeled chairs between takes. And... sheesh. No wonder they do thirteen episodes or fewer for a season in the UK.)

Yeah, true! I hadn't even thought about the physical aspect. Ugh, after I'm done on set for the day all I want to do is sleep until 2 minutes until my call time, IDK how they motivate themselves to get up and work out!! I do always feel bad for actors because sets almost always have nice food and we get to snack to our stomachs' contents, while actors generally can't eat any of it, always sadly asking for, like, tea with no sugar or rice cakes or a single M&M or whatever.

Every crew position has its plusses and minuses! Mine (script supervision) is not physically demanding at all, I get to chill between takes (I don't have a labeled chair, obviously, but sitting makes it 100 times easier to do my job, so I adopted a practice of always bringing my own chair from home so I don't feel bad kicking whoever's sitting in it out, lol), I don't need a lot of prep and I'm usually on my way home 15-30 minutes after wrap time...but it's incredibly mentally demanding. I have to keep very sharp focus when I'm on set, even if it's, like, 3 AM and freezing and we still have five hours to go. And since I'm a department of one, there's no one to share responsibilities with (or ask to cover for me if I have to pee! The other night I thought we had loads of time before we were going to roll so I went to the bathroom and when I came back, everyone was standing around staring at me and the director said "well, now that Sam's done we can roll." Whoops!!) And no crew job is noticed by the general public, even if we're on set just as much as the actors are and just as committed and essential to the project. My cold crew heart always melts a bit with affection when an actor talks about the crew as their family in an interview. <3

LOL, sorry, you probably care about none of that. I love the film industry, so I can get a little bit rambly.
