Story remix reveals are up!
The remix reveal list is up! I wrote two stories this time.
1) Written in the Bone was a remix of a story by
deborah_judge. I had a different assignment originally, but before I was even halfway done (procrastination, yay!), the person I was assigned to remix had to drop out for real-life reasons. (I'm still thinking about finishing that story; I have her permission, but it's one of those ideas that will require Actual Research. What was I thinking?!) Someone else dropped out, and it seemed logical to just reassign me to remix
deborah_judge. I was confident that I could find something to remix in her work.
I seriously considered some of her older Laura/Lee fic, but eventually couldn't resist the lure of my favorite character (Kara Thrace) and my favorite creepy cylon. This is the story that motivated all the whining about why must I always write the same themes?! The fairytale theme is one I've used a LOT with BSG fic. (And yes, Deborah--you're very smart. She guessed correctly, citing the fairy tale + Leoben factor. That, and I didn't comment on it. Heh.)
Writing it didn't take very long. No real research required; I did look up a few things to refresh my memory about golems. (Yes, I know that most readers won't even notice. I'm weird, okay?!) I'm very pleased with the final version of the story. Favorite characters and favorite theme--what's not to love? If you haven't read it already, you should go now and tell me how awesome it is. :)
2) Follow Home is a remix of a story by
sabaceanbabe, who wrote one of my remixes. Here's what happened. When my original remixer was running late,
lls_mutant contacted S'babe; she hadn't signed up to remix/be remixed but volunteered to pinch-hit.
As we approached the end of the remix posting,
lls_mutant said, "Wouldn't it be nice to try and get remixes done for our two pinch-hitters who didn't initially sign up?" I thought it was a great idea, as long as they didn't mind having a story remixed.
And then I started thinking, Remix
sabaceanbabe? "Me, me! Oh, pick me! I know, PICK ME!"
I wrote "Follow Home" very quickly, even though I had to rewatch parts of the finale. The only real sticking point was my concern about Hamish McCall's characterization, because... well, there's not a lot there to use. So I finally decided to go with what felt right, and hope that the story structure and ideas would be enough. (Heh, my poor beta-readers. They didn't know what to do with him either.)
Writing such a minor character seems to be a thing I do every now and then, though. The other thing that I thought could lead to correctly guessing that it was my story were the parts about the line of salt ceremony; I'm one of the few writers who has made mention of that before, in a story about Racetrack.
Anyway, I had a great time as always, even though I don't get to play the "Who wrote what?" guessing games. Thanks for participating, everyone! Now go read and leave feedback!
