My fictional boyfriends

I need to post this meme just so I can stop obsessing about choosing male celebrities for a bit. Taken from this amusing post by [livejournal.com profile] fionn_a_bhair.

The Old Enough to be My Father But I Still Would: Colonel Brandon, from Sense & Sensibility. He's so dedicated and noble and long-suffering! What a man! (also: horsie!)

The Drinking Buddy Who I Would Allow to Take Advantage: Stanley Ray Kowalski from Due South. He's like a puppy--a manic puppy who chews on your shoes and then wants you to pet him and take him on walks. He's clearly capable of staying on good terms with the women from his past--in fact, he's still fixated on his ex-wife, which makes him a bad bet for a long-term relationship. But he'd be a great pal and fun to hang around with. RAY!

The Holiday Romance: I'm going with Battlestar Galactica for this one. So many options. I was tempted to pick Lee Adama, but frankly I'd much rather have Jamie Bamber. Then he could talk to me with his natural accent and say words like 'onanistic' and I'll nod like I know what he's talking about (and blush later when I look up what the words actually mean). So instead I'll pick Alessandro Juliani as Gaeta. If we were on vacation he might relax for a moment and let his hair down... mmm, longish Gaeta hair with those curls and sideburns. I'm really not that into dark-haired men with long sideburns, so the vacation designation is perfect. And he'd get tan really fast so we'd have to hang out at the beach and he'd help me put on sunscreen... y'know, this is getting a bit too specific. Heh.

The First Husband: Wash from Firefly. I had to put him as first husband because 1) he'd be a blast but possibly a bit tiresome over time and 2) shortly after marrying him Zoe would track us down so I'd have to run and file for divorce in Mexico in order to survive.

The Second Husband: Jack Callaghan from While You Were Sleeping. Bill Pullman does a great job with the sincere guys. (I could have gone for him as the US President in Independence Day, but then he'd be grieving over lost wife Mary McDonnell...) Anyway, he's a carpenter, he has an awesome family that would love me and he's just so nice.

The Childhood Sweetheart: Gilbert Blythe, from the Anne of Green Gables series. In the Canadian film production he's played by Jonathan Crombie. He's ambitious--he plans to be a doctor--he's romantic in a realistic way and he's persistent. Unfortunately he'll make us wait to get married for a long time, until he finishes med school, and we'll be separated almost the whole time while I'm busy teaching (hee, this is quite fitting) and I hate waiting.

The First Love: Jarod from The Pretender. This was one of my first serial shows--a long story arc over multiple seasons. My love for this show is fading fast... I enjoy the nostalgia more than the actual show. Anyway, Jarod was a manly hunk that I once adored, but now... not so much. Plus, I still 'ship him with Miss Parker. I'll always regret you, Jarod, but I'm better off without you.

The Torrid Saga Which Inevitably Ends in Heartbreak: Bruce Wayne from Batman Begins. (Christian Bale is an awesome Batman.) Oh Bruce. You ain't right. I appreciate the fact that he channels his emo energy into a good cause but this guy is dark. DARK. We'd be angsting and fighting and he'd always win the woobie contest.

The Teen Movie Romance: Lane Meyer (John Cusack), Better Off Dead. Well, this choice certainly dates me. But Lane was artistic, and had funny fake-stoner friends and he eventually got over the pining for that unattainable blonde chick. Go emo kid! (Plus, John Cusack just wins at everything. I heart him.)

I think this category and photo freak me out a bit, though... due to my job. *reminds self that she first saw this movie when she was way way younger*

The I Know This Is A Bad Idea But I’m Doing It Anyway: Leoben! Battlestar Galactica! Callum Keith Rennie! (I'm sure you're all impressed that I managed to get CKR in here twice.) Leoben's courteous, thoughtful and gives the best presents! (A fake baby! Just what I wanted!) Okay, so his obsessions make him a really bad choice for any kind of relationship, but I think it might be worth the risk for a little while. 'Cause, um, yeah... blue eyes, scruffy, wiry but muscular, and I really have a thing for the obsessive guys in a short-term way. (Note to self: have papers ready to file for restraining order after it ends messily. And by messily I mean Leoben in a bloody heap on the floor.)

The So Wrong, and Yet So Right: Charles Gunn from Angel. First impression--brawn rather than brain. But he is actually quite intelligent, practical and have you seen his smile? Wow. I can be supportive, maybe even wield a stake in a menacing way. I think we’d get along surprisingly well. hey, he’s already shown that he’s attracted to skinny flat-chested women, so I have an advantage.

The One True Love: I have to follow the example of the person from whom I stole this meme and choose an Austen hero. The movie Emma was frothy fun, with a hint of more serious themes. I liked the book as well, and I'm sure that enjoyment was enhanced by imagining the pulchritudinous Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightley. The word for him is steadfast. Plus, he knows how to shoot arrows. And he's from one of Jane Austen's novels, so he's witty and well-rounded. (I was tempted to pick Northam's Sir Robert Morton from The Winslow Boy but no one else has seen it, I'm sure. I've even watched Happy, Texas just to see Jeremy Northam.)

Y'all would not believe how long my list of potential choices was for all of these categories. I feel like I'm slighting them, so here's a small sample:
Don Eppes (Rob Morrow) from Numb3rs
Captain Mal Reynolds
Xander Harris from Buffy
Goren on L&O:CI
Wolverine of X-Men (movie-verse)
Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) in Bend It Like Beckham
Wesley, from Buffy and Angel
Indiana Jones
Westley (Princess Bride)

(A fake baby! Just what I wanted!)

It's truly the gift that keeps on giving...

This looks like it was fun! I don't know how you chose thought... way too hard.

I meant though, not thought. sheesh

Hee, yes it is.

And this was fun, but too time-consuming... especially since I had to make some of the pics from DVD's.

Yay! I've been waiting for you to post your pics of men! I'm very impressed by your choices.

Gilbert! Thanks for bringing back Gilbert, I hadn't thought of him in years. There is something about those sweet wholesome types, right? You'd be engaged for ever but then you'd live happily ever after too. Until your daughter angsts in the later books. ;-)

I'd much rather have Jamie Bamber . . . I'll nod like I know what he's talking about (and blush later when I look up what the words actually mean).
Hee! (You're not the only one with a pocket Jamie-dictionary.)

Nice picture of Gunn. No other words. Looking at it again. Ah, Gunn.

And Wolverine! Poor tortured Wolverine. I don't think he'll have a happy ending, either.

You like men with quests and adventures! And who are sensitive and smart and cute! Very interesting choices.

*g* That daughter was quite the angsty young thing, wasn't she? I love the Anne books way too much.

(You're not the only one with a pocket Jamie-dictionary.)

Heh, I was listening to him in that three-hour midseason podcast wondering 'what's he talking about?'
I really want to see him in some British show just to listen to his natural accent. (Unfortunately Netflix doesn't have the Horatio Hornblower series available.) Or he could talk to me in French. That'd be cool.

Nice picture of Gunn. No other words. Looking at it again. Ah, Gunn.

I really wanted smiling Gunn, but none of the publicity photos had him smiling (and by that time I was cranky from all the pic-hunting, so I didn't bother getting the Angel DVD's out).

Let's not forget obsessed and doomed. Hah!

Let's not forget obsessed and doomed. Hah!

Yes, when Westley and Indiana Jones are the more 'normal' (i.e. most likely not to die and not be a stalker) of your picks that's saying something!

(Oh, Spidey icon. You know I love him. ;-))
