rose_griffes: Crying: acceptable under two circumstances (Ron Swanson's pyramid of awesome) (crying)
Friday, April 20th, 2012 05:37 pm
It's Friday night! And I'm more than a little excited about staying home and catching up on Missing. (Last weekend had enough fun to last for a few weeks.)

My extra LJ userpics have expired. *sigh* I still have several weeks left on my paid account--which I will definitely renew--but I can't decide about the userpics.

Change of topic: I haven't talked about clothes in ages. How many times have I ranted about skinny jeans and tunic tops? Well, I'm trying a new tactic: wear them myself in an attempt to bring an end to the look. (Because teenagers seeing their un-cool teacher wearing clothes like theirs should definitely bring about a change, don't you think?)

rose_griffes: Person of Interest on CBS (person of interest)
Thursday, January 26th, 2012 06:15 am
Hey, tonight there's a repeat episode of Person of Interest, so if you haven't been watching, you have time to try it (and do some catching up if you want) before the next new episode.

Recruitment post! )

I wouldn't say this is the best show ever, nor would I claim that it has a startling originality, but so far I'm finding it entertaining, and I'm pleased at how few of the tropes are the kind that really annoy me. Keep in mind that I have a high tolerance for implausibility and plot holes, though.

Tonight's repeat episode is 1.08 "Foe". It's not bad; a bit cliché but the themes worked well and I really liked one of the characters introduced in the flashbacks. If you can't watch 1.08, you might go online and take a look at episode 1.11 "Super". It's an homage to the Hitchcock fim Rear Window, and it works well as an introduction because a lot of the pieces are in place. The CBS website has it online for free for the US audience. spoilers in case you jump straight to 1.11 )

Okay, I think that's it. Give it a try. Then you could read my weekly posts. They include exciting things like random capitalization of Important Things and repeated use of the phrase dun dun DUN when there's yet another plot twist.

So I'm maybe a third of the way into Eldest, the second book in the Eragon series, and I'm finding spoilers for the book so far and for series five of new Who )

Day five of my favorite fictional female characters is in a different location. The new livejournal comm [profile] awesome_women was doing a "Who would you want on your side in a fight" theme, so I took advantage of that and wrote about why I would want Kara Thrace on my side in a fight. (Short answer: because she's awesome.)

And since Kara is always my favorite, I'll take this moment to mention two other Kara posts I've made: My love for Kara Thrace, with pictorial evidence and Kara Thrace's ponytail: an ode in picspam form.

If you're very observant, you'll notice a certain amount of picture borrowing between these three posts. I was way too busy and tired to look for lots of new caps last night.

I made a sunset picspam to post to [livejournal.com profile] osculations, then realized that it could take months to be released from the queue by the moderator(s), so I'm putting it here now.

It's Mother's Day and I'm... doing a picspam of Florence, Italy to celebrate? My brain is weird. Though in my defense, there's a maternal connection in these photos. All of these pictures were taken during a brief stay in Florence in June 2004. I took most of them, my mother took a few and a friend took some as well.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you who have the joy and privilege (and hard job) to act as a mother figure in someone's life.

[livejournal.com profile] shah_of_blah had a holiday wish: 8. Just keep talking about Kara Thrace. It was the motivation I needed to finally finish this post--I've been working on it for ages.

Somehow people are unaware that my favorite character on Battlestar Galactica is Kara Thrace. I have no idea how this might have happened. Ahem. Anyway, to rectify the misunderstanding, here are several reasons why I think Kara Thrace is awesome. With pictures to illustrate.

back here )

Don't forget my ode to Kara's ponytail if you want more Kara pics now!

eta: This was posted before midnight (my time) on the day of Russian Orthodox Christmas. Totally counts as a Christmas present! Woohooo!

It's Halloween! here, have a picture of me when I was young )

My personal favorite costume was when I was a teen. I took a large box, glued on some fabric as a table-cloth, then cut a hole in the top and glued on a cigar box that also had a hole in the bottom. Then I could put on the box and slide my hand through the hole, coming out the cigar box, rather like "Thing" on The Addams Family, but holding a treat bag. So the big box looked like a table with a cigar box perched on it. And why was I motivated to go to such lengths? Because I wanted candy, darn it, and I didn't want people to say I was too old to go trick-or-treating. I crouched down after I rang the doorbells. At least I had younger siblings with me, so maybe it didn't look completely ridiculous.

I don't have a problem with teens going trick-or-treating, as long as they have a costume. *grins*

Trick-or-treat!

I'm still sick. And bored, stuck at home. And I can't believe CKR is currently losing on [livejournal.com profile] nicole_anell's hotness poll. It's time to summon the minions! All... one of them!

Most of you know Callum Keith Rennie as evil (but hot!) cylon Leoben.

But he's more than just an evil cylon! He's a pretty face! And that's what counts in the poll!
Non-Leoben pics of Callum Keith Rennie )

In conclusion: Callum Keith Rennie is lovely and if you agree, you should go vote off someone else.
Fly, my minions, fly!

Um... I'm not sure this counts as a tribute to Kara or just something really weird. But I like her hair, and when it's longer it should be in a ponytail; I was so excited when there was a brief glimpse of ponytail this past week. And then I had this weird idea and wrote most of the new lyrics during a weekend car trip.
ode to Kara Thrace's ponytail, set to the tune of 'Home on the Range'--with MANY pics )

Okay. Sorry about that. But not sorry enough to stop posting more pictures.
Lots more ponytail pics )

Ugh, I am so tired of cropping and uploading and cutting and pasting.

Still feverish. Meh. More Battlestar Galactica stuff, all listified. (Feverish people are allowed to invent words. It's my new rule.)

1) [livejournal.com profile] taragel used one of the songs on my LJ Christmas wish list to make an AMAZING Kara video. It's all about Kara and Kacey and mothers and daughters and death and... oh, just go watch it. So awesome.

2) Why did I watch the promo for next week's episode? WHY? (It was the Canadian promo rather than the US one, but still... now I wish I hadn't.)

3) spoilers for this week's episode ONLY (4.14); shippy stuff--not that ship, the other one (and some of that one, too); also many pictures )

*pops in*

Well. I thought I'd be in the middle of watching a foreign film at a posh movie theatre right now. Unfortunately my nearby metropolitan area isn't one of the cities on the list for the movie yet. And I was all excited after reading Roger Ebert's review! *sigh*

[livejournal.com profile] het_reccers is a newish comm with open membership and a current challenge lasting two more days for Battlestar Galactica recs. Go rec some of your favorite het fics! All ratings acceptable. I'm mentioning this because so far I've posted half of the recs for BSG.

I posted some beach-related pictures of our January trip to California here in February. Have a few more pictures... this time of theme park adventures!

No new Battlestar Galactica this week. Woe. Also, I'm sick and staying in tonight. Woe woe woe.

So I bring you the picspam of doom of the previous episode of BSG. With bonus rambling comentary by me.

I had a terrible day. Technology (and its imminent failure) almost made me cry. But I went for a walk after work, got myself a free dinner (it's Teacher Appreciation day, which apparently means a free burrito) and as soon as I post these pictures I'm going to eat some chocolate. Yay!

In June 2003 I visited Spain for five days. They went by too fast, and I didn't get to see nearly enough. Here are pictures from my last full day in Spain, in the beautiful (Atlantic) coastal town of San Sebastian.

There will be no new episodes of Lost until April 24. (And then I think it's just the one episode until... whenever season five starts.)

I had an offer from someone on my f-list to have an icon/icons made for me. Here are some pictures I'd love to see made into icons; I thought I'd share them with everyone because really random picspams are fun, right?

A real-life friend wants pictures of warm, sunny California. It wasn't all that warm during my trip there, since it was January, but chances are good that it was warmer than where she lives. So here's the first California picspam! This is all beach or ocean-related stuff.

I thought I was going to end L.A.W. with the fic I posted yesterday. But then I started looking at all these pretty picspams that [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 linked to here (some links in comments) and I couldn't resist. So:
One last bit about Leoben. With pictures. )

I never have had a thing for red-heads. First crush: blond boy with green eyes. Second: blond boy, blue eyes. Eventually I moved on to dark-haired men as well, but redheads? I can't think of any, from real life or celebrity crushes. That has apparently changed. I blame Damian Lewis.

This is Damian Lewis.

He's British. He's been in... stuff. Stuff I've never watched (Band of Brothers, The Forsyte Saga). I know nothing about him, but I think I could develop a massive crush on the character he plays on NBC's Life.
cut for a few more pics and a short but rambling commentary about the show )

Wednesday nights. NBC. I'll be watching online the next day. Or maybe I'll buy the season pass through Amazon Unbox. I'm actually tempted by that.

I really wanted to do another Colorado picspam, mostly because I *love* the San Luis valley (south-central Colorado; a nice flat swath of land between the San Juan mountains to the west and the Sangre de Cristo mountains to the east. The last picspam (of the trainride) started in the valley.

I have some childhood friends who lived near the very small town of Crestone, CO for several years. They ran a hotel there, in the middle of nowhere. The nearest stoplight is at least a 45-minute drive away. Wal-Mart--50 minutes minimum. In the summers I used to go there and help out--make beds, wait tables, whatever needed to be done. During my spare time I'd hike, read, whatever I felt like doing. Then they sold the hotel. *RUDE* Why didn't they think of me and my needs?! Heh.

Anyway, during vacation this summer we went back there for a few short days. It's still gorgeous and isolated. If I lived a different life I might choose to be in the San Luis valley somewhere.

This picspam is dedicated to the area from Moffat (the town where you turn off highway 285 onto County Road T) up to the hiking trails past Crestone. All photos taken in August '07.
PICS: mountains, flowers, the back of my shirt... )
