Yay, baby brother is home safely from Russia! Baby brother is really, absolutely old enough to take care of himself. This was his second time in Russia. He lived in Syria--twice. But he's still my baby brother and I'm glad he's home and that the worst thing that happened was he had a cold on the plane ride and now his ears are a bit stopped up.

So. We've had lots of "unpopular" fashion and fannish opinions (which, in my opinion, are simply cranky opinions, not necessarily unpopular ones) lately. I decided to do five upbeat opinions instead. Just 'cause I'm annoying that way obnoxiously cheerful at times different. Possibly these are unpopular opinions but I really don't care. *g*

Rose's Five Fab Fashions )

Five fannish loves--spoilers for BSG and the new Trek movie. They're not surprising opinions, if you've read my journal before. )

Someday I'll do five cranky fandom and fashion opinions. Maybe by the time I get around to it, Crocs will be gone and I'll have one less thing to rant about. Heh.

I'm still sick. And bored, stuck at home. And I can't believe CKR is currently losing on [livejournal.com profile] nicole_anell's hotness poll. It's time to summon the minions! All... one of them!

Most of you know Callum Keith Rennie as evil (but hot!) cylon Leoben.

But he's more than just an evil cylon! He's a pretty face! And that's what counts in the poll!

In conclusion: Callum Keith Rennie is lovely and if you agree, you should go vote off someone else.
Fly, my minions, fly!

Hi! Remember how I said I wasn't going to make a post about the Battlestar Galactica show finale because 12,000 words of fic totally counted as episode analysis? Um... I lied.
This is long and rambly and possibly incoherent; also has spoilers for all of BSG )

Y'ALL. I WANT TO SEE THE LOST SEASON FINALE RIGHT NOW! I HATE THIS WAITING UNTIL THE NEXT DAY!

I'm about to dive back into work-related stuff, but I have thoughts on an important subject: me. (heh)
fanfic reading and writing )

All of this brings up some interesting thoughts about what is or isn't canon, though. I rarely attempt to write something that deliberately goes against what the show has established. Sometimes my fic may speculate on what comes next, but I try to keep it within the universe we know. But my definition of canon is apparently a lot more restrictive than other people's.

Though when the canon idea is, in my opinion, inherently dumb, I have no problem ignoring it. Hello, human/cylon babies (not made out of love)! Welcome to Earth!

what's 'canon' for me )

a poll about canon! )

I wasn't done playing with the characters from 'Settlement.'
This is twice that the muse has tricked me intro writing 5K plus words by saying it would be fluffy fun. Hah!

title: Generations Untold
characters/pairings: Laine (OFC)/Mark (a Two)
rating and warnings: R; talking about sex, glowing spines, babies, normal life stuff if your life were set 150,000 years ago
spoilers: through 4.20 'Daybreak II' (post-finale fic)
summary: "Everything came down to survival first, but it would be nice to have some company while trying to stay alive."
thanks: to [livejournal.com profile] jashyr for beta-reading and to [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 for encouragement
word count: just over 5000
note: This is a follow-up to Settlement and uses information established in that story.

eta: follow-up story: Lifeline (Mark's point of view)

Fic OF DOOM is done. In addition to all the warnings below, I should also mention that apparently I can't resist fic as meta, either.
a quick thought about the show finale )

title: Settlement
characters/pairings: original female character; OFC/Two; other people and cylons
rating and warnings: R; sex, death, potential trigger issues related to pregnancy, adult themes
spoilers: through 4.20 'Daybreak II' (post-finale fic)
summary: surviving isn't enough
thanks: to [livejournal.com profile] pataka02 and [livejournal.com profile] jashyr for beta-reading and to [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 for lots of encouragement (and listening to me whine)
word count: around 7600
note: I researched chorioamnionitis and tried to apply the information as well as I could. I also researched other things, some of which I gleefully ignored. Feel free to assume that any mistakes on my part are deliberate!

Generations Untold follows up with these characters shortly after this story ends.

Um... I'm not sure this counts as a tribute to Kara or just something really weird. But I like her hair, and when it's longer it should be in a ponytail; I was so excited when there was a brief glimpse of ponytail this past week. And then I had this weird idea and wrote most of the new lyrics during a weekend car trip.
ode to Kara Thrace's ponytail, set to the tune of 'Home on the Range'--with MANY pics )

Okay. Sorry about that. But not sorry enough to stop posting more pictures.
Lots more ponytail pics )

Ugh, I am so tired of cropping and uploading and cutting and pasting.

I think I shall do bullet points today. Or the equivalent of them, since I don't know how to make them on LJ.

- I've Loved You So Long is a good movie. Bring a tissue. I particularly liked the relationships in the sister's family--lots of love, affection and respect.

- Pushing Daisies has apparently been cancelled. That's sad but not unexpected. Possibly I brought this on by buying season one on DVD? *g*

- Did you know that Harlequin romances are still around? Huh. While mulling over the idea of a post about the draw of the powerful man/ordinary woman convention in romance media (because I clearly don't have enough things to do with my spare time?!), I decided to check the book section at Wal-Mart and there they were! The titles are just as cheesy as I remember from my teenage years when I would sneak them into my room from the library because my mother would've been appalled.
Title examples: The Sheikh's Rebellious Mistress. Bought: One Night, One Marriage. The Billionaire in Penthouse B. Aw, way back when it used to be just millionaires. Cost of inflation, I guess.

- Firefly fic rec. She'll Fly True by [livejournal.com profile] ubiquirk. Zoe and River, post-movie. Go read this, it's fabulous!

- There's a new ten-second promo for season 4.5 of Battlestar Galactica.
slightly spoilery personal reaction )

- Time for lunch! Food, whee! And then maybe some Thanksgiving/Christmas shopping.
