Getting closer to the end of the semester, and I AM SO TIRED. Particularly tired of grading papers, but also just generally tired.

Anyway. Aside from the problems of having one character named Jennifer and another character named Jessica (why?! they're too similar and I get confused!), I enjoyed the romance novel Beard Science by Penny Reid. Too many sex scenes near the end, but then again I'm the type of reader who often skims sex scenes anyway. I very much enjoyed the character growth in the heroine and hero, and the humor usually worked for me. So consider this a moderately enthusiastic recommendation. (I bought it because it was one of the deals of the day. So my recommendation includes not having paid full price.)

I watched a short series of character trailers for The Witcher; its first season is available December 20 on Netflix. It looks like a fairly standard fantasy epic set in fantasy Europe: the people are pretty and mostly white. I am curious enough to give the first episode a try during Winter break. After the grading... and grading... and grading...

Season four of The Expanse is now on Amazon, but I'm still rewatching season two. I think that's what I'll continue to do, at least until Winter break. I probably won't rewatch all of season three; just the first half.

Less than a month until season four of The Expanse drops on Amazon, so I'm pushing myself to finish my second watch. Today I finished season one, so I should be able to pick up the pace as I move ahead, given that I really like season two and the first half of season three.

(Things that got in the way: watching season one of Unforgotten, reading a book trilogy, real life, the knowledge that I was going to witness Julie's horrifying demise again...)

Anyway: As much as Holden is still super annoying to me, I get why people like the dynamic between him and Miller. They're my least favorite characters, but watching them try to cross Eros station (while dying of radiation poisoning) was actually pretty interesting, even though I knew what was going to happen. Naomi is still my favorite by a long shot, but I found Miller tolerable for the last two or three episodes! Which is progress!

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is advancing; only two episodes left before I finish this season. I don't know any more spoilers, although I recall enough of the film to know that whatever else happens with the resistance, it doesn't win a happy-ever-after type of ending anytime soon. So I'm very curious how they're going to end this, and if it will be open-ended (with the possibility of another season) or not.

The aesthetics are still amazing. Jaw-droppingly good, even. Also, the music is gorgeous, and I'm probably going to look it up on YouTube at some point.

Unrelated to the rest of this post: I deleted my tumblr account almost a week ago, and then remade an account with the same name. I hated the idea that my online name of 13 years might be taken and used by bots. Anyway, it's sitting there doing nothing, which is fine.

I'm still rewatching The Expanse. the talented Florence Faivre makes awful men a bit more palatable )

I can't remember the last time I actually did a rewatch of a show. I often say I'm going to rewatch something, but there are so many shows to watch on streaming services that I almost never do.

Hm. It was probably season one of The Good Place. So, not all that long ago. But it's still rare for me in recent years. Anyway: I just rewatched episode one of The Expanse. cut just because )

I need some userpics for The Expanse.

Oh! Thanks to [personal profile] shadowkat for mentioning the show Slumptown Stumptown. It's new on ABC; I watched the pilot episode on Hulu, and it was a very solid start. Noir detective procedural starring Cobie Smulders. She does well, and there's bonus Michael Ealy.

So who's excited for season four of The Expanse?! BECAUSE I AM. spoilers for season three )

Five minute sneak peak of episode 4.1:

"Official" teaser trailer for season four:

I also watched the first half of episode one of an Amazon show called Patriot and decided that quirky + grim is not necessarily a combo for me. But here's the trailer if you want a sense of what it's like. Warning for blood and a brief but violent death.

So the change of course continues. It's a bit of sad irony that the show is yet again giving a significant chunk of storyline to actors Steven Strait and Thomas Jane; their characters aren't my favorites. Also, Strait is super pretty! But in my opinion, he's not as strong an actor as some other cast members. Or maybe it's just the writing? IDK.

Anyway! spoilers )

3.06 to 3.07 feels like a case of whiplash. spoilers, natch )

Fan-made character study videos! Warning for blood, violence, swearing, etc.

First up, my favorite bodyguard/spy, Cotyar:

Amos Burton--an appropriately unsettling music choice makes this a haunting look at a violent pieced-together man.

I made the mistake of going straight into season three after I finished season two of The Expanse--not an error because of the show going down in quality, but rather because I can't recall exactly which plots were doing which things in season two without mixing in season three storylines.

At any rate, I am thrilled that spoilers for season two... and possibly early season three )

Fun fact! Apparently a lot of Avasarala's season one jewelry belongs to Shohreh Aghdashloo.

Edited to add: This fanvid for the show is awesome. Warning for blood, violence, death, swears. I think it's only season one footage.

I've watched the first two episodes of the Netflix production The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. The first episode was uneven enough to make me question if I wanted to continue, but the nostalgia factor won out. Episode two was stronger; it's still a bit of a hard sell as a show, though. The puppets aren't as expressive as animated characters could be, but the visuals are stunning otherwise.

Given that this is a prequel story, and given what little I remember of the movie, spoilers for a decades-old film )

I'll keep watching, although it's not going to be at a fast pace. I'm watching with my current roommate, and our schedules rarely overlap.

AAAAH, THE EXPANSE 2.07 IS STILL SO EXCITING! AND JARED HARRIS WAS BACK AS TOM ZAREK ANDERSON DAWES, AND HE'S SO MUCH FUN TO WATCH! Also, I'm really feeling the Diogo appreciation right now. I honestly thought we'd never see him again when he got spaced in season one. Hooray for recurring characters who add to the plot and atmosphere of a show.

Amazon has been playing promos for their upcoming original show Carnival Row. Orlando Bloom is a lead; I'm interested in seeing him again. It's been a while. Jared Harris has a role, which is another reason to tune in, and Indira Varma, who is always a delight.

Oh my goodness, Chrisjen Asavalara fills the Laura Roslin space in my heart. Her "motivational" speech to Errinwright about locating Jules-Pierre Mao was a thing of fire and brimstone beauty.

(I need some dreamwidth userpics for this show.)

Hm, I can see now why some people are annoyed by Holden. On the other hand, Naomi wasn't exactly the obedient crew member, so... this ought to be interesting later on.

Oh, Fred Johnson. You are a clever survivor. And Holden is too optimistic and idealistic, so this is going to get messy. Hooray!

BOBBIE?! ARE YOU OKAY, BOBBIE? (I know she is. Or will be. One plus about watching well after a season airs is that unless you exercise absolute vigilance and restraint, you get a fairly good idea about which characters are sticking around for later seasons.)

Okay, The Expanse. You get your own tag. I'll have to go back and fix some of the older posts to reflect that.

I've gotten behind on season six of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Not sure why I'm mentioning it; this seems to happen every season, except season four. As a show it has enough flaws that binge-watching works better than waiting a week for a new episode.

I've mentioned some of the things I've been working on during summer vacation: a lot of cleaning and organizing, a little bit of crafting--mostly sewing. So far that's been alterations and repairs, rather than sewing original items. Anyway, a sewer doing a lot of tedious tasks must be in want of background noise TV, so I tried Whiskey Cavalier again. It works just fine as a show that I can mentally tune out as needed.

But here's how lackluster it is otherwise. I forgot that I was watching it for background noise, and ended up starting the new version of Charmed for the same reason. It also works well as something to watch or listen to while multi-tasking, and it's apparently less forgettable than Whiskey Cavalier is.

Season two of The Expanse has had a great start. I'm excited to finally meet Bobbie Draper. Chrisjen is working the politics angle, and it is fascinating. Jules-Pierre Mao is still around, just for the purpose of maintaining his title of "worst father ever".

Unrelated to that last sentence: Have I mentioned how many gorgeous brown-eyed people are on this show? It's a lot. *swoons*

I'm going to be really busy with various travel and family activities in July, so my time online will be sporadic. So... in fact, it's time to finish packing right now.

mammogram talk )

I saw Men in Black: International. It was unoriginal and had a lot of weak spots that could easily have been better written, but it was also a lot of fun, and the two leads had enjoyable chemistry, so thumbs up.

Finally finished season one of The Expanse. mild spoilers )
