FYI, television reception where I live is not great. No NBC, fuzzy reception for ABC, CBS and PBS. I've been watching a few shows online, so any show links are for the internet feed. (Dish Network and I had a messy breakup. Happily I have fast internet, so I've moved on. I can't say the same for Dish--he calls and whines on my answering machine and sometimes he tries sending me letters... it's just pathetic.)

I enjoy NBC's Chuck so much. It's fun. (Just watched the third episode, still adorable.) It's got action, humor and a really likeable, adorkable leading man. I'm not at the point where I feel like analyzing it or writing giddy meta about it, but it's a blast; I recommend it.
eta: Adam Baldwin's super-spy actually gets to be humorous at times--and not in a "he's such an ape, it's hilarious" way./eta

Yesterday I watched episode two of Life. I still don't know if I actually like the main character but he did pique my interest enough to keep watching. It's different from what I expected of the premise--a cop who was imprisoned for multiple homicides and finally freed... and given a job as police detective (and a lot of money) as part of his settlement. I guess I expected an older, more jaded leading man. Instead we have a younger-looking guy with a quirky outlook--and not quirky in the usual way. Just weird. But I am interested enough to keep watching so far. They've made me wonder about the relationship between the detective and his attorney, worry about why he's not contacting his soon-to-remarry father and... ooops. I think I'm a bit hooked in spite of myself.

While watching "Life" I was thinking about cop shows in general.
I used to watch all of the Law & Order franchises when I had satellite. I loved them. I love cop shows in general, and apparently I have a thing for emotionally-damaged quirky detectives (Bobby Goren, I'm looking at you). So far NBC hasn't chosen to put any of their L&O shows on their free livestream website, so I haven't watched lately. Surprisingly I haven't really missed L&O: SVU much; near the end of the time when I was watching live the show was leaning heavily toward a relationship between Benson and Stabler. I didn't want that, and still don't. I think one thing that attracts me to cop shows is the buddy aspect, whether the partners are both male, both female or a mixed pair. Actually I think I prefer the one male-one female pairings because I enjoy seeing the different thought processes and action-reactions that they have. But I don't want to see the romantic or sexual connection made between the two. Hm. I had way more thoughts about this last night while trying to sleep and now I don't recall what they were. I think the gist was: my mostly non-shippy habits *definitely* apply to the cop shows I've watched.

I do miss L&O: Criminal Intent. *sigh* Not enough to pay $2 per episode, but enough to whine about it.

Gave "Gossip Girl" a try but I couldn't make it through the first episode. Probably hazards of my profession. I may try "Pushing Daisies" or "Reaper" if I have some spare time soon--both sound interesting (though rather similar to each other in the premises). "Journeyman"--can't decide if it sounds like a brilliant premise or just plain stupid. I already watch one show with a confusing time frame (Lost) and I'm not sure I want to add another to my list.
eta: also watching 30-Rock and maybe My Name Is Earl online/eta

Now I have to go be productive for work. Bleah.

If you like non-shippy cop partners, you should watch The Wire. McNulty and Kima are an example of a male-female partnership that's strictly platonic. Not that McNulty wouldn't mind getting into Kima's pants, but she doesn't go for men.

I think it's truly the best show on TV (and I'm a BSG fan). Plus, there are a lot of pretty men on it :)

Huh. I found the HBO page for it online and it doesn't show any way of watching without cable/satellite. So I went to iTunes and apparently the show's not available there either. Maybe I'll add a season one disk to my netflix cue, since it is available there. Thanks for the rec.

Sorry about Criminal Intent. It seems like a show you would like. Remember Cagney and Lacey? Why aren't there any more female/female buddy cop shows?

Yay, for non-shippy you! Strangely enough, I like the plots of cop shows, cookie cutter though they may be. And I like the cops as individuals. I don't know if I like people as buddies. Only the HP trio and I'd ship them except to me, they're too young. Yeah, I think I liked SVU because I liked the way that Olivia connected with the survivors. She and Elliot were like mom and dad. But L&O generally works best if we don't know too much about the detectives. I know nothing about Van Buren and would like to keep it that way.

So with me, I like ships or people alone. With cops I like the cases.

Too bad about Gossip Girl. I so hope it doesn't resemble anyone's real students. That show is just snarky fun. I think writing about it may be more fun than actually watching it. And the kids are too young but they are pretty. And I have yet to see one inside of a classroom. I liked the books because I like young adult novels. And GG's voice is really fun as narrator.

I never watched C&L, but I definitely have the same question. I understand that police work is a male dominated profession, but still... plus C&L showed that two female partners could keep the public's interest.

I did watch mostly for plots. I guess I like both the individuals and the buddy aspects--I loved some of the episodes of SVU in which Olivia was dominant and Stabler wasn't around much. (More than I liked episodes in which Stabler was dominant but I think that's 'cause of Olivia's messed-up past... we both have that love of heroines with tragic histories, apparently. Heh.)

L&O generally works best if we don't know too much about the detectives. I know nothing about Van Buren and would like to keep it that way.

Yeah, I think the shows have done a good job of hinting at backgrounds without allowing the shows to be overwhelmed by them. (A lesson that CSI needs to learn.) To me that includes keeping the relationships out of the spotlight as well...

I certainly don't know any students like that, thank goodness... and I'm horrified to imagine that there might be, somewhere. Mostly, though, it comes down to having no appreciation for trashy shows. I don't like Desperate Housewives or Gray's Anatomy either, and to me GG is pretty similar, just with a younger set of actors. (I *really* love Tim Daly, but I can't bring myself to watch Private Practice, not even for him.)

And GG's voice is really fun as narrator
I did like the narration. It fit the tone well.

Hee! I hope not!

It's funny, my loyalty for GG is leftover from the novels, which didn't really read as trashy. It's different when you're inside the various characters' heads. And I felt sure that the show wouldn't find an audience and would get canceled, but it's been extended already through the season. Who knew?

Ah, trashy shows. I have watched my share. I did regularly watch Beverly Hills 90210 about a million years ago. But dude, everyone was watching it! Seriously, you could walk through an apartment building at that time and it was like playing in stereo. This show isn't quite that trashy. Yet. ;-)

Ah, trashy shows. I have watched my share.

Heh, maybe my use of trashy is a bit... pejorative. hope it didn't make you feel too defensive. I've certainly had my share of incidentally-trashy shows

I prefer shows with some theme or objective outside of the basic human relationships--like BSG's theme of survival, and all those cop shows solving mysteries. I enjoyed Gilmore Girls but it didn't interest me enough to keep watching, because there wasn't anything beyond the basic human interactions. TV is one form of escapism, and I want to be transported beyond what I can/might experience in my own life; that's why I read so many sci-fi & fantasy novels. I do read 'regular' books too, but the fantasy stuff is dominant in my reading list.

Hee, did I sound defensive? Maybe a wee bit. Believe me, GG transports me outta my real life. I'll never live like that. Though after watching it, I do am fighting a strange desire to buy a cell phone . . . :-)

Ah yes, you love sci-fi and fantasy books. I have such a hard time with them. Not the sci-fi but the fantasy. I always have a sci-fi TV show I'm watching but after BSG, I don't know if I'll have a new one.

Good to see the old Leoben headdesk icon! It's been so long since I've thought about Leoben. And so long since I've read any new good bsg fic. Read anything good, lately?

[identity profile] rose-griffes.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Actually my mention of 'defensive' came from me feeling guilty about using the term trashy. I was using it with (slightly disdainful) affection. Heh. You didn't sound defensive to me, I just wanted to make sure I didn't come across as a jerk.

Believe me, GG transports me outta my real life. I'll never live like that.

Heh, after I posted the comment it occurred to me that technically the show could fit my fantasy/sci-fi genre since I wouldn't live like that either. *g*

Hm, BSG fic... naw, you've already seen any good stuff I've run across lately (the fics by [livejournal.com profile] dionusia and [livejournal.com profile] prolix_allie). There's not a whole lot going on in the BSG fic-world, it would appear. I've been mulling over a Racetrack on Earth idea myself, but it's not writing itself. Rats.

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, write that Racetrack story! BSG fandom needs new fic right now!

(And no, you didn't sound like a jerk. I was a bit defensive. GG is my guilty pleasure. It's like being caught with an empty carton of ice cream. Oops. ;-))

By the way, I love when you use the word, "Rats." I myself would use a more colorful word, but Rats is so Rose. *hugs you*
