At work I used to use Windows Media Player for audio clips, mostly because 1) the program was there and 2) on occasion I would use the variable speed slider bar to slow the audio just a bit.

Unfortunately this summer's round of computer updates seems to have eliminated that option with WMP. I can play clips at normal speed or (too) fast or (too) slow--just three pre-set speeds, no slider bar any more. Aaaaaand the campus tech "expert" doesn't know anything about why it doesn't have that option anymore, and the district "expert" said "Ask your campus tech."

EVER SO HELPFUL, Y'ALL. THANKS SO MUCH. *grumpyface*

So now I need to find a program that I can download to let me choose variable speed settings. And it needs to be free, easy to download, and not mess up the other stuff on the computer that doesn't actually belong to me, yeah. Feel free to throw any suggestions, if this happens to be something you have experience with.

Moving on to Battlestar Galactica stuff: THERE ARE STILL KARA/SAM FICS BEING POSTED AT pyramidofdreams! Eeee!

Yesterday I posted two ficlets (anonymously) at bsg epics: Jean, Caprica resistance, doing recon, and Laura Roslin interviewing a Two (late season three-ish).

(I mostly failed at guessing who had posted other ficlets there. Hmph.)

WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO DELICIOUS.COM?!

*throws hissy fit*

*throws another hissy fit*

eta: don't know if it's going to do any good but I did find an e-mail to try: feedback @ avos dot com. I've sent a couple of specific messages about how the new format doesn't work for me, and what needs to be returned to make the service usable. I've also imported my bookmarks to an html file, which... well. It's in chronological order with no visible tags, but at least the bookmarks are there. So if I find a service to use instead of delicious.com, I can eventually put some of those bookmarks back online.

I'm seriously teary-eyed. I have a work-related delicious.com account that has been rendered unusable at this point.

Hm, I haven't done a good clothing rant in a while, have I? And that's about all I feel like talking about--at least in a public post. So here goes!

I just received a clothing order from Lands' End. (Yes, the apostrophe is wrong--it's been wrong since they started their business and a publisher messed it up on some of their earliest printed material.) I've been ordering clothes from them since... hm, maybe while I was still in college? They had swimwear that didn't have those high-cut legs back when that was all anyone else had, so it's been a very long time. I've grown--gained weight, I should say--since then. But the size I order for trousers and skirts is still the same number. And today I found that I can't keep any of the shirts I ordered because they're too big.

UGH, I hate vanity sizing. Lands' End isn't even the worst offender. With some brands I actually wear a smaller size than when I was in college. How is that even possible when my waist is two inches bigger?! It makes me wonder if I'll eventually have to buy sizes in the negative numbers while weighing even more. I know I'm slender for an American woman*, but THIS IS RIDICULOUS. (I don't think size inflation is a problem in Europe, but I could be wrong.)

Not really ranty, but remember those adorable Clark's ankle boots that I loved? They've already been imitated by Old Navy. Three and a half inch heels and faux suede? I'm glad I ordered the Clark's boots**, even though they cost a whole lot more. I can't wait for cooler weather so I can wear them.

Scratch that. I just can't wait for cooler weather. IT'S TOO HOT.

On to non-ranty clothing stuff. Possibly my next sewing project: making a knock-off of this sweater. No need for boiled wool, though. I'd just use a grey tee-shirt and slice it up the front, then use more grey jersey fabric for the detailing. Oh, and add in some darts to make it more fitted.

I'm also thinking about this gorgeous stenciled skirt. Wouldn't something like that be lovely with a black skirt and red flowers? I'd probably just use acrylic paints with fabric medium mixed in, rather than buying the fabric ink recommended in that post. I already own the paints and fabric medium, so I just need to choose the right skirt.

I do have some sewing and craft projects I've finished recently, but 1) I'm too lazy to post them here right now and 2) I'm considering starting a separate blog for sewing and craft stuff anyway. Livejournal really isn't the cool hang-out for the sewing crowd. Heh.

*The NHLBI says I'm in the average range, for whatever that's worth.

**The ankle boots are cheaper with Amazon.com than anywhere else I've found, at least in black suede.

I was rewatching Ultraviolet (episodes 4-6 only, since the first disc is already back in Netflix's tender care) and... I own shippy goggles. I didn't know I had them, but I do. Angie/Vaughan! He's pining, y'all. PINING! And she's repressing it! I had no idea I could be so enamored of a (totally unrequited) romantic pair on an ensemble show. Everything that happened is now subject to interpretation of how it affects Angie/Vaughan. IS THIS WHAT IT FEELS LIKE WHEN YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PAIR?!?! Gah! I'm glad I didn't know I had shippy goggles before now--what a pain!

Oops. Instead of unpacking I ended up reading the unfunnybusiness post about the most recent battle over warnings on fanfiction. This led to reading several of the links on [livejournal.com profile] metafandom about warnings.

There should be a warning for 'Things that will make you keep reading when you should be working on other stuff*.'

just a wee bit more on the topic )

*This is a joke.

*joins the mob*

Writing a fic about a character that I just don't like is frustratingly difficult. I'm trying to find something sympathetic about her. Ugh.
(And my story will be late, but at least the mods at the [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon haven't posted anything about taking away any future progeny if I don't post on time. They haven't yet told me I'm allowed to post late, but lots of stories last year were posted late, so hopefully the basic operating policy is the same now.)

Surprise walk-through evaluations at work: normally fine. Today... not so much. Blech.

Grading tests. Paying bills. Making lesson plans for work. Making plans and handouts for activity night. Cooking something so that I don't starve to death. Somehow I'm supposed to fit all of these things into one evening. (This would be part of the reason why fanfic is not going to be done on time. Real life takes precedence.)

*is done with rant*
*actually, no. is done with time to write and post a rant*

So I get home from vacation and my computer dies about twenty-four hours later. My techy brother (who already doesn't live near me) is out of town on business, so I can't beg him for help yet.

This is just to inform you that I want to read the huge backlog of fic, etc. for which I've been saving the links, but I can't yet.

Also, if you just magically know why my computer has power but won't boot up, feel free to say so. I already checked all the cards and such to make sure they were plugged in properly and that's all that I know to do. WOE!

Fannish stuff first: [livejournal.com profile] pyramidofdreams (Kara/Sam comm) is doing drabble-tag. I posted two drabbles there, so now someone needs to go write one of my prompts! *looks hopeful*

eta: oh, also, [livejournal.com profile] palmetto's fic Daybreak takes the mid-season finale and makes it sort of hopeful. Kara/Sam, lots of other characters (and pairings! hee! go read to find out!).

Real-life random stuff (crankiness-inducing): one of the local news channels had three misspelled words on the screen during the newscast. Ugh. Plus one report used the word manimony to refer to alimony for men. Alimony is not gender-specific, and manimony just sounds dumb. I don't care if it was used on CNN.

Okay, the (almost) end of the school year is bringing out the 'Woe Is Me' posts, apparently. I have a really big whiny post in my head. I'll just shorten it and say this:

1) Sometimes my bosses at work do not-very-bright things, which results in...
2) me not getting to go exercise or go out on Friday because I'm too busy catching up on their last minute stuff.

also,
3) Computers are evil and now I'm rewriting the vast majority of a test that I thought was done.

*sigh* So I'll be sitting here in front of my computer for quite a while today, but not doing very much that's actually fun. I am planning on taking a break at some point and seeing the new Narnia movie, though.

BSG--a few brief things about this week's episode and a bit more complaining )

I think it's time to watch an episode of Farscape instead. Then go work on, um, work. Yeah.

Yes, that's right. Another post. But it's of a fannish nature, so it's Very Important. I just watched the extended cut of 'Unfinished Business.'
there's not a lot of stuff back here, but there might be CAPSLOCKS OF RAGE )

Well, frak. Lying in bed (theoretically trying to sleep but instead thinking about writing) I just remembered a key season three plot point that throws all my Caprica Six/Leoben fic out of whack. So I got up to try and figure out which additional episodes I have to track down and rewatch. Am now downloading 'The Passage' and 'The Eye of Jupiter.'

Thank goodness for [livejournal.com profile] wisteria_'s episode screencaps, because Television Without Pity's BSG recap page isn't working.

You know what's really irritating about this? My taciturn succinct muse will probably only write 600 words for this fic, even though I'm going to rewatch many minutes of the show and fret endlessly and get distracted thinking about the story when I should be doing other things.

Stupid cylons.

And now I'm gonna crawl back into bed while the computer does its magical downloady thing.
