Oh hey! It's another update! Go me!

MEDIA: The movie Thelma is worth seeing in a theater, if you're able to do so. It disappeared quickly from the closest theater, so we had to drive to the next town to see it. I would guess that nonagenarian June Squibb had a fun time in her first leading role; her character was flawed yet sympathetic, and the script took great care in the family relationships. Oh, and surprise Agent Coulson Clark Gregg! I wasn't expecting him. There are some other casting surprises, about which I'll say nothing in the post itself. Feel free to chat about the film in the comments if you've seen it.

GARDEN: This has been a good year for the cucumber plant, weirdly enough. Not sure if it's because housemate A got a bit generous with the bone meal or because of the wildflower patch right next to it, or the copious rains in late May/early June. Or all of it, which is the most likely explanation. At any rate, after plentiful rains came oppressive heat, so the cucumber plant is unlikely to produce much more fruit. At least, not that we'll actually eat. (If it gets hot enough, cucumbers taste bitter.)

The yellow tomato plant has done okay, the cherry tomatoes are abundant, and the plant that's supposed to produce those purple tomatoes (Cherokee purple, a heritage plant, NOT a genetically modified purple tomato plant) has done absolutely nothing. It's tall, but hasn't set any fruit. This is my second attempt at Cherokee purple, and it's been, er, fruitless. In the literal sense.

Didn't remember to plant any squash of any kind, and not sure if I will now, given how early the hot weather showed up.

TRAVEL and REAL LIFE: I've already visited two siblings, one on east coast time and the other on west coast time. Sprained my ankle right before the easterly trip, which was unfortunate. For July I'll do a bit more traveling, but not by plane. And I may start an online course related to teaching, as well as painting (walls and ceilings) a bit. Should probably make a priority list for all of that.

I had a FANTASTIC and AMAZING first trip of the summer, and now I get to spend the rest of it carefully budgeting. ;-P Took my mother to France for a while, and it was beautiful and fun and awesome. So many pictures to sort through, and other things to catch up on around my home, so I probably won't miss traveling for at least a little while. Except for the food; I started missing French food as soon as we were served lunch on the airplane ride home. *sigh*

Speaking of things I did while stuck in an airplane, I watched the first four episodes of the BBC's The Musketeers, and now I must find the rest of season one and watch. Feel free to share any ideas for how to accomplish this, if you're so inclined and informed.

Links! Most of you probably know that J.K. Rowling wrote a sharp-tongued Rita Skeeter 'report', but I figured I'd link it anyway. Really fun and a quick read.

A Short History of US White Women's Measurements Used for Patternmaking, or, why nothing seems to fit...

This DIY pool noodle pom shooter looks like a fun thing to make and use with kids or without 'em

I tried this bleach and lace patterning on an old tee-shirt and was pleased with the results. I'd definitely not do a first try on a clothing item you treasure, though.

Speaking of tee-shirts, here's a clear post on how to alter a boxy tee-shirt. And a post on making a very large tee (or other stretchy fabric shirt) into a skirt. The shirt's front placket became the skirt's back walking slit--nifty!

And... that's about it for now, I think. Maybe I'll do a half-hearted attempt to catch up on your posts, but I'd say your best bet is to leave a comment with link(s) to anything you really want me to read.

I let my paid account here on livejournal lapse, and now I'm seeing ads... most often ads for fabric I need to buy. Darn cookies, telling everyone my business (in order to drum up business of its own).

But in order to sew something, you have to actually do work, and for the next little while I plan to cultivate one of the seven deadly sins--specifically sloth. Ah, sloth. (Actually, the word plan is a bit misleading. That would imply deliberation and intent. Such is not the case.)

Anyway! I loooooove summer. And it's now time for that annual post in which I state that I probably won't be around much... though that seems a bit unnecessary this year, considering I haven't been here much in the first place. Nonetheless here it is: I'm going to be busy cultivating sloth, and other activities, so I won't be reading here very often.

Oh, hi there. Still alive!

I just started trying to make my summer vacation plans more definite: I'm looking at ticket prices and places to stay. Best to do all of that now and get everything settled. Woohoo, summer!

Of course, there's close to three months of school left before any vacation traveling can start, but still... it's exciting to think about.

I finished reading Americanah, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. As a 'journey' book, I liked it, though I have very mixed feelings about the ultimate destination of the two main characters. But it was interesting and well-written.

Still watching Person of Interest, although that was touch-and-go for a while. The last episode that aired (3.16 "RAM", I believe) was the first one I genuinely enjoyed since the Terrible Thing happened. Also still watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which has been very enjoyable so far during its freshman season. (And I'm still watching Elementary, although I'm behind on it. AGAIN. Somehow that keeps happening this season.)

Depression: trying a second medication, since the first one made no difference. Debating over other options, but waiting to see if the second medication helps first.

So first there was the "I'm ignoring the internet to WRITE" stage, and then there was the "I'm ignoring the internet because I have no time to do otherwise" stage. I'm not sure when one turned into the other, but those days have come to a middle.

Possibly an 'eye of the storm' kind of middle, so I may be able to do some online reading and actual writing in the next few days before things get hectic again.

Speaking of that: I'm taking my mother to San Diego soon! Just because! (Well, we have friends to visit there, among other reasons.) Anything I should see there? I've been to San Diego once before, but this will be a longer visit with fewer people's schedules to juggle, so I have time to investigate cool things.

Also, if you have things I missed, feel free to link me. I may ask again after the post-middle stage. *grins*

Because work has been... work, I feel like I should remind myself (and you along with me) of the following summer plans:

*a trip to Washington D.C. to see baby brother and COOL STUFF IN D.C.! (my first visit!)
*a few days with my sister in Pennsylvania and her adorable numerous progeny
*time with my parents and middle brother in Oklahoma, and time with older brother in Kansas
*ONE WEEK IN MEXICO! AT THE BEACH!
*probable death of my poor garden while I'm gone on all these trips

If you feel so inclined, tell me what I should go see while I'm in DC. Eeeee, I'm so excited!

I don't have any relatives in Utah and the mountains there aren't as pretty as the mountains in Colorado. Sorry, Utah! Plus skiing and I don't get along at all. But I just spent a three day weekend there, and it was lovely. I'm back home and quite tired, but glad to have visited some people who mean a lot to me.

Hopefully this week will feel more normal than last week, when I was trying to get everything ready for the brief trip and running around like a... like a really stressed out teacher. Sorry, can't think of any good analogies.

Note to self: stop reading articles about infamous former-fugitive film directors right before bedtime. It's not conducive to calming, restful thoughts. (There may be a post later, though I'm not sure I have anything eloquent to say. Maybe HULK SMASH! would suffice, actually. And apparently I'll never be watching a movie made in Hollywood or France again.*)

My days of summer traveling have come to an end a middle. Gah. Am very tired. And annoyed with airports, airplanes and anything having to do with air travel.

The Cat (the new-to-my-life cat who came in February) is speaking quite loudly in disapproving tones about owners cat servants who leave for two weeks.

Anyway. There is NO WAY I'm ever going to catch up on livejournal stuff. I commented on exactly one post in the last two weeks. So link me to whatever post(s) you think I should read! It can be something you posted yourself or by someone else. No one will know what you link me to, 'cause comments are screened. Be as self-promoting as you wish!

(No need to say welcome back. I'm just assuming that you all missed me terribly and that life livejournal without me was a vast, empty wasteland. *g*)

[livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 has an interesting post about the nature of cylons, her trust (or lack) in them, etc. Oh, and in the second part she transcribes a lot of the "Cylon Bible" as seen in 'Life on the Cylon Baseship' a clip with interviews with RDM, some of the actors who play cylons, and others. The video is not spoilery beyond, oh, season three finale.
don't link the cylon meta to comms, plz

[livejournal.com profile] palmetto has a short fic with Seelix and a Two: Eulogy.

eta: I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT TO MENTION THIS! Look at action!figure Leoben patting action!figure Kara on the tush! And that's the company's promo picture!
*laughs and laughs*

Is anyone else slightly vexed that [livejournal.com profile] the_wireless puts all those 100-word fics on the fic round-up? Or is that just me?

I've been peeking around online to see if I can get a good price for something fun during Spring Break. (Someplace where the college students don't go en masse.) Wanna help?

Just got back from one of those progressive dinners. (Probably I should explain for those not in the know. Special dinner, all planned ahead which house is designated for appetizers, which for the main course, then dessert. And we all follow each other around like sheep for the evening.) Anyway, I did my usual thing--admire the decorating, think how it looks like way too much work to attempt to duplicate, and eat too much food. Fun!

More meme stuff: see the states I've visited. And the countries, too.back here )

I survived the Great Road Trip of 2008. States where I spent at least two nights during this trip: Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Missouri. I think that's all, but my mind is feeling a bit blurry, so I'm not positive. Anyone want to unpack for me? And buy me some groceries? And clean out my fridge?

If you posted anything in the last two three four weeks that you feel I must read, link me! Or if there's an awesome post on someone else's LJ that I simply have to read, give me a link. I'll screen comments, so no one will know if you decide to link me to a website about the history of spaceships on television science-fiction programs. (Actually, that would be kind of interesting... /nerd)

Or just say hi.

Or just sit there and think: 'Huh, Rose is back. I didn't realize she was gone.' That's okay, too.

I forgot Mothers' Day! Okay, I didn't actually forgot my own mother last week, I just forgot to say anything here. So: Happy (belated) Mothers' Day to everyone who acts as a mother figure to others.

My mom is awesome and lovely. I'm so incredibly fortunate to have her.

Also, happy Victoria Day (one day early) to the Canadians out there! Do you get the day off from work?

I have a semi-real reason for posting. Have any of you spent time in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area (Minnesota)? I'll probably be there for a week in July, and I'm just wondering if I should stay longer and do fun stuff while I'm there. Maybe I should keep going north and go to Canada? (Yes, I realize it's not all that close to the border... but hey, it's a lot closer than where I live!) Or go to Wisconsin?

I used to have relatives in Wisconsin. We visited there in August the summer I was thirteen. I have never been so cold in August in my life. My relatives said it was fine and that we were big wimps--then we found their thermal underwear in the laundry.

I'm feeling 1) a desire to post something not related to television and 2) a nerdy wish to show off that I can use photobucket now. (I think. And yeah, like it's soooo hard.) So without further ado, here are pictures and a few comments about the last week of my stay in Ecuador, June 2005.
