rose_griffes: Mickey Smith holding a bat (hey Mickey!)

I've pre-ordered the blu-ray discs of Person of Interest. This means I need to buy a blu-ray player now. Heh. The series is available Sept. 4; I didn't pay extra for fast shipping, so it will take a few days for them to arrive. (Probably just as well, and I should, y'know, write stuff in my free time, since I'm trying to finish that fanfic before season two begins.)

slightly spoilery reaction to new Doctor Who )

I had a lovely Labor Day weekend, and can't quite believe that the alarm clock will be sounding at 5:30 tomorrow morning. There wasn't enough time to do all the things I wanted to do!

Almost up to 19,000 words on popcorn fic. This means I've almost doubled the wordcount of my previous longest story. Just finished chapter four. (Originally I had planned seven, but that may go up to eight.)

Relatedly, there were a couple of excellent Person of Interest fics posted at the main lj comm today (gift exchange, apparently? *shrugs*), plus some that I quite liked at AO3 and other places in the past several weeks, so instead of linking to all of them individually, I'll just give y'all a link to my online bookmarks again.
http://www.delicious.com/rose_griffes/person-of-interest-fic

I try to include a basic description so you can know if it's something that will interest you or not.

And now it's time to go watch a different Nolan brother production: The Dark Knight Rises. Yay for excessively long and grim comic book movies? That's my impression before seeing it, at any rate. And yet I'm going anyway. Hm.

Movies this week! Two on DVD, one at the theatre. Frequency was released in 2000. It has Dennis Quaid and Elizabeth Mitchell as the Sullivans, a firefighter (him) and a nurse (her) in the 1960s. One kid, John. (How cute was wee John? Oh my, so adorable!) trailer-related spoilers and my thoughts )

Inception was 2010's big movie. My students with good taste liked it, so I finally decided to try it. vaguely spoilery (but not really) )

I did see Brave, and it was charming and enjoyable. doesn't count as spoilery, but I'll cut anyway. )

So I'd recommend all three movies, for different reasons.

I mentioned Inception's music; for me that's one item on a list of odd things that have helped convince me to watch something. (Music from the movie kept popping up on one of my Pandora radio stations, and I really liked it, so I bumped the movie up in my Netflix queue.) Other unusual things? I started watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles after reading this crossover fanfic (Battlestar Galactica) and watching this crossover fan-made video (also Battlestar Galactica).

And speaking of (possibly?) fan-made things, Tumblr now has A Guy in a Suit--abbreviated AGIAS, if you notice that acronym showing up. He's "following" Person of Interest fans on Tumblr; their names are on a list of Irrelevants (heh). (He started following me yesterday*. Clearly I need to take some evasive measures.) I can't decide if it's done by Warner Bros. or CBS as viral marketing, or by a clever and dedicated fan. Either way, it's been hilarious to watch the changes as fans notice them and post about them. Tumblr is a very good format for building enthusiasm that way.

(Hm. Just noticed there's now a "coming soon" page now. Makes me more inclined to believe it's done by WB or CBS, not by a fan...)

*I have to admit, that was a hilarious notification from Tumblr. a-guy-in-a-suit started following you. Dun dun DUUUUUN!
rose_griffes: Detective Joss Carter, from Person of Interest (carter)

Okay, while the list of "Tech things for Reese to steal" that y'all made in the poll wasn't very useful, it was nonetheless amusing. So that's good. I still need a MacGuffin for chapter three, however. *sigh* (Hee, [livejournal.com profile] raincitygirl totally figured out that I wanted a MacGuffin.) If I can get past chapter three, the next two chapters should get done a lot faster. (Then I'll be weeping and moaning again about chapter six.)

Moving on. If I'm going to procrastinate fic-writing, I should at least do so in a topical fashion, right? The topic being the show Person of Interest, of course. I'm copying [livejournal.com profile] emmiere's format for an episode guide--what to watch and what to skip. I liked the show from the beginning, but there are several fans out there who have said that they didn't enjoy the earlier episodes. I'm trying to keep as much of the season-long story arc intact, plus include episodes that I found more interesting for various reasons.

I like Finch and Fusco, but my Carter and Reese bias probably shows in this list. season one episode guide )

I've watched through 1.13 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, having skipped one or two episodes so far. It's the perfect show for lunchtime TV because it's not going to be gory (bad while eating). And I have to say, I continue to be impressed at how much a "children's" show is doing with story arc, world and character building. Good job in humanizing both Aang and Prince Zuko in episode twelve.

I've been rewatching episodes from Person of Interest, because of popcorn fic. (Alas, there are no lengthy car chases for me to use as writing inspiration, but I've figured out a way around that.) Observation: Jim Caviezel played Reese with a quieter voice and more facial expressions in the early part of the season. The more he dialed up the voice, the 'quieter' his face got. It's really noticeable if you watch his interactions with Zoe Morgan the first time versus the second time. He's still doing interesting facial responses; they've just been adjusted on the subtle scale, I suppose. Or something.

The movie Hanna (2011) is like a cross between Alice in Wonderland and The Bourne Identity, both in terms of plot and visual aesthetic. I should have liked it more than I did; it was enjoyable, but there wasn't a lot of depth to it. I kept wondering what was left on the cutting room floor. Maybe nothing; maybe the writers and director were perfectly happy doing a road trip/thriller with a teenage girl protagonist, and didn't care about substance when they could have style.

I finally watched episode two of Luther and have concluded: at this point I'm not very compelled by the Luther-and-Alice show, except for what Alice can reveal about John Luther. Also, Alice better stay away from Zoe, because NO. I'd make some threat about keeping Zoe safe, but... these are fictional characters, so. But speaking of Zoe, how lovely is it to have an estranged wife who isn't evil?! Their relationship (or lack thereof) is complicated, for very real reasons. Thanks, show. Also, I really like DSU Rose Teller (Luther's boss) and DS Justin Ripley (his new partner).

Both episodes one and two had interesting cases seasoned with "Why is John Luther such a mess?" I'm interested enough to go on to episode three sooner or later.

Somewhere there has to be a picture or moving gif of Alice with the text "His own bespoke psychopath," right? Because that's just... really obvious.

More procrastination on popcorn fic by writing drabbles; Zoe Morgan/John Reese this time. Hello, part-time ship. Though I wouldn't describe most of this as shippy. (Maybe someday I'll write happy drabbles. Right.)

fandom: Person of Interest
characters: Zoe Morgan/John Reese
rating: maaaaaybe R for sexual themes? though there's nothing explicit at all

Okay, I think I've figured out a solution for the popcorn fic stumbling block. It was plot-related rather than general writer's block. So... onward! After I double-check that it makes sense to someone other than me. *grins*

Speaking of fic for Person of Interest, I've made another Carter/Reese rec post at het_reccers. Anyway, here are four other PoI recs, not Carter/Reese (at least not in the main plot).

The Dark After Midnight, by wanderer on AO3. Reese and Finch friendship fic; includes Reese struggling with the desire for a drink, something the show hasn't really addressed since the pilot episode. (Background Reese pining for Jessica, Finch pining for Grace.) PG-13 for language, over 7000 words.

By LindaO: Backing Up on ff.net or on AO3. It's complete at twelve chapters (over 60,000 words). If this were any other fandom, I might say that the original character is perhaps too talented a hacker, but this fandom has Harold Finch, so it's impossible to make that statement stick. The plot is clear and balanced well with the action and character-building. PG-13 for swearing and for non-explicit references to pornography (plot-related). Warnings at both links for more details.

A Fine Death, by blacktop50 on LJ. She continues to write PoI stories with gorgeous prose and living, breathing original characters and my teeth are aching from clenching my jaw out of envy. This has Reese trying to figure out what to do when a Number doesn't want to be saved. Background Carter/Reese and OMC/OMC. PG or PG-13, 5000 words.

Expendable, a short Fusco POV character study. (Written before the finale.) PG-13 for swearing and a morbid attitude, under 1000 words.

If you enjoy the stories, you should take a moment to say so. Everyone wins that way!

eta: D'oh! I knew I forgot something! Related to my Sunday post, emmiere has made a viewer's guide for Avatar: The Last Airbender. Yay!

Fiddling around with backstory for Kara Stanton. Since I'm stalled on popcorn fic, I decided to turn my head!canon into some drabbles.

fandom: Person of Interest
characters: Kara Stanton (imdb.com spells Stanton's first name with a C, but the Machine spelled it with a K -- and the Machine is never wrong), passing mention of original characters and John Reese
rating: PG-13 for language, sexual content, creepiness
disclaimer: Kara Stanton doesn't belong to me. Good thing too, because she's scary.

Post-season one fic is currently a go (in spite of my abject terror at the idea of SO MUCH PLOT); I'm now collecting music for a writing soundtrack.

So far I have several songs the show has used (by Unkle, Massive Attack and others), but it turns out that there are a few bits of Person of Interest's soundtrack that I do like. Undecided about The Machine's theme but I quite like Root's theme. (The finale version of Root's theme has some interesting changes in it.)

Moving on to the final episode of season one! Person of Interest 1X23 )

I wanted to post my thoughts about the season finale of Person of Interest but LJ wasn't letting me upload pictures. So for now, have a PoI fanvid that I found thanks to Tumblr. I haven't located any LJ entries about it, so... y'all should comment for me if you have a youtube account. :)

Direct link. Huh, been a while since I recced a fanvid. Shiny new fandom hasn't had many that have really clicked for me. Funny that the one I like best so far is really more about the Machine than any of the people on the show.

Amy Acker! She's going to be a guest star on the finale of Person of Interest TOMORROW (Thursday, May 17)! I was going to see The Avengers yesterday, but I was having car troubles. Figured it out finally; it appears I have a leak in my radiator. By the time I managed to get some coolant and put it in the system, it was too late to go to the movies. Ah well. Maybe tomorrow after work? Just because I need to see it before I end up accidentally spoiling myself for even more information about it.

Although possibly my car will be in the shop to get the leak fixed tomorrow, so maybe not.

It's Mothers' Day in the US; I hope it's been a good one for all the mothers out there. Oh dear... suddenly Tom Lehrer's song that mentions motherhood just popped into my head. Now that's just wrong. Here's a link! Oedipus Rex. *cackles evilly* *feels guilty*
Sorry 'bout that. Only not sorry enough, probably.

Trying to write creepy Stanton-Reese gen fic, and not doing so well. So this is an attempt to explore Stanton's voice with someone else. Not cross-posting this anywhere.

characters: Joss Carter, Kara Stanton (imdb.com spells Stanton's first name with a C, but the Machine spelled it with a K -- and the Machine is never wrong)
spoilers: through 1.20
note: Kara refers to herself by her first name in this; she has no reason to keep the last name she used with the CIA. (Works for me, anyway. *shrug* After all, it's been two years since, y'know, spoilery stuff happened.)

700+ words back here )

Totally open to constructive criticism right now, by the way. In general, if there's something you've been dying to say about my fic, or about this ficlet in particular... Or any thoughts you have on Stanton, since she seems to be my stumbling block right now. (Maybe it's Reese, though. Or the scenario. Or meh, I hate writing.)

BSG remix reveals have been posted. I wrote The Hour Is Getting Late, a tiny fic with Tory's POV during the season three finale. Tory/Sam, PG-13.

While I think the end result is fine, I sort of wish I could ask for a do-over. It was incredibly frustrating trying to write Battlestar Galactica fanfic when my brain was wanting to focus on new show. Apparently I'm a serial fandom monogamist, and BSG is no longer in dominant position. It was only a matter of time; other than one exception, every story I've written for other fandoms was done after the BSG finale in 2009.

That made me start thinking about what factors lead to me writing fic )

*laughs* Apparently number three proves I'm just stubborn and perverse. This isn't news to me.

Had a (brief) discussion on another LJ about my religion and politics, so I'll link to this recent article: A Female Episcopal Priest Visits a Mormon Temple. I thought it was an interesting (although brief) perspective on my religion from an outside perspective.

fic for Person of Interest: I'm still planning Carter/Reese post-season one plotty fic. I've managed to come up with some workable ideas about, uh, stuff (plot-related stuff! motivation and character stuff!), so now I'm worried that the finale is going to throw all of my plans into chaos with some sort of difficult-to-work-around cliffhanger.

I never posted a link on LJ (though I did on Tumblr) for a Zoe Morgan/John Reese fic that wasn't written by me (I know!): A kiss can be even deadlier, if you mean it. PG, no real spoilers. It's funny and there's the tango.

fic for Battlestar Galactica: I'll post the author reveals tomorrow afternoon for the BSG remix. In the meantime, in addition to the remix written for me, y'all should read Family Matters (The Things Inside Remix). It's a remix of Nicole's Give You All. (My summary for Nicole's story: it's like Joss Whedon decided to write Kara/Lee fanfic. Everything you wanted in the worst possible way.) The remix still has the same dark premise--Lee has been taken captive on New Caprica by a Six--but now we see not only the Six's POV, but also Dee's. And it's fascinating and heartbreaking and a wee bit hopeful at the end. It's also long--about 30,000 words--but totally worth it.

livejournal stuff: Ugh, apparently they're redoing the scrapbook feature. And reducing how much memory we get, which isn't really an issue at this point (I'm waaaaaaaaaay below their old and new limits), but uploading pictures is currently not so easy. How am I supposed to have more pictures of pulchritudinous Jim Caviezel in my LJ if I'm having trouble uploading more than one picture at a time?

Person of Interest fic: I posted Finch-Carter-Reese genfic yesterday: Three Sides, written for Liz for the We Get Carter mini-gift exchange.

Also, I added some more fic to my Person of Interest bookmarks. Some of them are only on AO3 and ff.net, so they might be new to you. I've been keeping up with character tags as well as fandom and rating. (Go me.) And wow, delicious.com has been like a desert lately. That "update" last summer lost them a lot of fandom-related users.

Battlestar Galactica fic: Someone remixed my very first story! Words is a remix of Prophecy with some post-finale Settlement-verse details instead of a modern world. I mentioned in my comment that it's like my brain blew up and threw all of the things I'm fascinated by into one story.

There are still stories being posted at BSG remix, by the way. We're almost done, so it's time to start the guessing games of who wrote what.

Hm, I wonder if there are any BSG fics in the multi-fandom remix this year? That went live either yesterday or today, I'm not sure which.

still TV-related, but not fanfic: short reactions to Missing, Fringe, Parks and Recreation--not spoilery, but I'll put it back here anyway )

Finally, Tumblr! *shakes fist* It is the worst place ever when it comes to spoilers. I'm now just tracking Person of Interest, Missing and Martha Jones. And Jean Barolay, because angry red-heads with guns are awesome. (I may have learned something about Doctor Who and the plan for next season. I'm not certain. Oh, and I know Fringe spoilers for the episode I haven't watched yet.)
